Class of 2014!

hey guys
congratulation tetris!!! i’m really happy for you :)

ninja…i’m so sorry :frowning:
i know how it feels when you can’t go home cause you’d screw everyone else over :frowning:
but…you know just take the subject tests and do your best!
if they suck you can still them to switch you into the RD pool
(at least that’s what I do…don’t know it it helps)
I wish you the best of luck for your SATs and SCEA :)

and good luck to everyone else too :)

Well the big difficulty of this test is that it’s far away and difficult to get to. I’d have to get to London after work, so I wouldn’t arrive at my hotel until about 1am anyway (and I still have to book a last minute hotel because the friends I was going to stay with are no longer available. And I also don’t know if a hotel would even let me check in that late) and I would then literally have to get up at 5.30am to travel another 2 hours out of London to get to the test centre. Totaling over £100 in travel and expenses. That’s a lot of money to spend to do badly on SAT tests!

And at least if I apply RD then Yale will see my test scores after more time to prepare and they’ll get my January resit SAT I.

portugueseninja, my advice is going to conflict with everyone else’s but I genuinely don’t think that the SAT is the end of it all. I know someone who got a 1920 in SAT I and had only one SAT II and she was accepted to UChicago. Why? Because she had jaw-dropping fantastic essays. She was an international asking for bucket loads of aid too! You’re already at an advantage 'cus Yale is need-blind for us.

I don’t think that they expect too much from internationals taking the SATs. They know [or I hope they know!] that we aren’t “groomed” for it like Americans are. Not to mention, they will take into consideration that taking the SAT was a huge switch from the curriculum we’re used to.

So, my advice right now? Don’t lose hope just yet. Work on those essays and work on other things that could set you apart from other applicants. Focus on you strengths. Worse case situation, you’ll have to RD but don’t give up hope just yet, maybe?

Whoops. I apologise for the essay I just wrote and the fact that I’m back to add more :$

I second October’s Child, actually.

tetris, I forgot to congratulate you on your first acceptance! Woohhooo for UMich!

ninja, darling, relax. did you try talking to the yale people to explain your circumstances?
AND like october said, its not all about scores, usually its the essay that tips an application over into the ‘success’ pile.

*pressed post by accident so am now continuing:
maybe theres a way you can tell yale that you would have definitely have done scea if you could… and there’s always RD, youknow? I read in a recent article (i would post the link if i remembered it but i dont, just take my word for it) that EA isnt easier than RD now, because AOs are limiting their EA intake, to make more room for RDers, because usually EAs are people who are ‘advantaged’ in that they have lots of prep support etc. Put it this way: applying RD wont affect your chances for the worse. If you were going to be accepted EA, youll be accepted RD too. I know the extra almost 5-month wait is intolerable, but if i can wait, you can too!! comeon, ninja. dont be so stressed you get panic attacks!! thats NG!! i say, if its that bad, just postpone your tests and do RD, if you have no other option. anyone know of the bob-the-builder motto?
CAN SHE DO IT? [fill in response]

Yes she can!

Another comforting fact to know: Yesterday I was at this Q&A session with some peace corps volunteers from US and these guys helped a girl get in a US college with full ride, and we were talking about all sorts of things, they told me that for internationals even though the SATs just might be the most important thing (because they have no way of finding out how rigorous our curriculum is or how lenient our professors are when they are grading us), min scores for the top schools are like 600, and 640 is a competitive score. But yeah, I’m not taking any chances and I’m definitely taking it again in Dec, need to break that 2100 pleaseandthankyou.

Lyrics for everyone:

Relax, take it easy,
For there is nothing that we can do.
Relax, take it easy,
Blame it on me or blame it on you.

Congrats Tetris! You must be a great applicant if they’ve let you know so early!

Are there any Croats among 2014ers?
Is anyone applying ED to Connecticut College?

Thanks luluzg!

Hey guys. I didn’t do the test because I ended up getting swine flu. SIGH. Oh well. I have spoken to Yale and they said it’s fine for me to just do RD instead and they unsubmitted my supplement so I can select RD and resubmit it.

Thank you so much for all your support, I love you guys group hug

AND I just decided to apply to Mt Holyoke College. So Quasi, if you go to Amherst and I end up at MHC we could totes be neighbours :D

Swine flu? ZOMG. Get well soon!!!

I’m applying for UMich’s Honors Program. Gotta write an essay on one of the prompts at [Honors - University of Michigan](http://www.lsa.umich.edu/umich/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=e784b2448f419110VgnVCM100000a3b1d38dRCRD&vgnextchannel=15330ae24f186110VgnVCM1000004701010aRCRD). Siiiiiigh.

Thanks, I’m definitely feeling better than I was yesterday, that was horrible. I’m not feversome anymore thankfully. Just got the horrible cold/cough/sore throat nonsense. Sigh. But at least I get some time off work :D

Dude, those prompts are so good. I kind of wish I was applying to UMich just so I could do one of them. If I was slightly more of a nerd than I currently am I might just write one for fun. But I have like 10 other essays that I HAVE to write, and the rational part of my brain tells me I should do the essential ones first before indulging in essays for enjoyment…

Haha. Either way, you’d have to write these essays only after getting into LSA, so you technically could still apply and write 'em honors essays in like…April :p

Did you get accepted with financial aid? I don’t really understand what honors is… :-/

Not applying for financial aid anywhere. I don’t think UMich offers need-based aid for internationals. They DO have scholarships, though.

Honors is basically a specialized section within the university for the most academically accomplished underclassmen. At UMich, you get dibs on the cool dorms, dibs on picking classes, and the chance to take cool honors versions of intro classes (Intro Psych has 400 kids, Honors Intro Psych has 20 kids). So…you can see why I want to apply and get in. That would make UMich a helluva lot more enticing even if I don’t get in anywhere :)

Oooooooh I unnerstand. I knew it was something for the clever kids but didn’t know what exactly. That sounds awesome though. Clearly you’re good enough for that :D

Even on the chance that you didn’t get accepted anywhere else (naturally, I think you will, but this is hypothetical) do you like it enough to accept the place there? And if you do get in elsewhere, where does UMich come in your list of favourites?
