Just curious but many seniors change their Facebook names while undergoing the college process. Do you think the names are real or aliases in the admitted students FB group or are there both?

I got in!!! Tulane is my first acceptance. Hopefully I’ll get enough scholarship money to actually afford it. Does anyone know how long after it says you’re accepted on Gibson before you get the official letter with (hopefully) scholarship notification?

@thedoctordonna Can you tell us your stats?

I had a question about optional rec letters. I currently have completed my whole application and optional essay but haven’t sent rec letters. At this late in the process with the deadline 9 days away, would it be reasonable to get them in, or would this delay the processing of my application?

On my own logic i thought that there’s no way they could hurt. But my sis told me (not sure where she got this idea but it confused me) that if you send in something optional such as these rec letters on top of an already completed application, it causes your application to be delayed in being reviewed and hurts your chances of being evaluated early. In other words it would “send you to the back of the line” if that makes sense…

Not sure how much y’all know into this but any input would be appreciated!

Yeah sure.

GPA 93/95.93 UW/W (only weighted is sent and my school doesn’t rank)

5 on AP Chemistry, 5 on AP English Language and Composition, and 3 on US History

Essay on my struggle with a chronic illness and how it influenced what I want to do with my life

@Bromar334 You should definitely submit your letters of recommendation. As long as you submit your application by the early action deadline, you’re good. The letters of rec will only help your chances of acceptance and scholarships. It may slow down how fast you receive a decision, but it’s worth it.

Could anybody direct me to the facebook page for admitted students please?

Search for “Tulane University Class of 2018” and you will have to join and then your admission counselor will let you in!

My D got her notification on Gibson today - three weeks after it was marked complete. She’s doing the happy dance!

Congrats guys! do you mind sharing what state you’re in, and if you were SCEA or EA?

Crusoemom - Fantastic! Congratulations to your D, and of course by extension to you. Definitely make sure she applies for the DHS and/or the Paul Tulane Award. She has the stats to be a strong contender, and that would be full tuition! I imagine that would help pay for things.

divingbells - Congrats to you as well! Same advice on the scholarships, you definitely have the stats to strongly contend.

bromar, I’m in AZ and applied EA.

fallenchemist, yep! I’m popping over for a visit next week and dropping at least Paul Tulane Award off at Gibson while I’m there.

Hi NYMom3kids - I am actually a social media professional as is my husband, so I find that to be a very interesting question!

So my daughter did NOT change her name. However, she barely uses Facebook at all and tweets maybe once every 3-4 days. My husband and I warned her last year about the dangers of posting inappropriate content, cursing or complaining too much about school on social media. I know these college admissions folks probably have better things to do than check out what these kids are saying on social media platforms. BUT… I would imagine if they were on the fence about you, then your social media postings could hurt you.

That said, I have seen several of my daughter’s friends change their names. These are the kids who tweet multiple times a day (although sometimes on Facebook) and frankly, for those kids I think it’s a good idea. These are the kids who have absolutely no filter and want to post whatever is in their brains at the moment with no regard for how this might look to admissions counselors.

Are you seeing it a lot with your kids’ peers?

My daughter is not on Facebook much at all anymore, similar with the recent trend reported in the news. Her tweets and other posts she may make are all pretty innocent. I think she changed her name because everyone else was and they tend to feel that having parents or adcoms checking their posts is an invasion of privacy, whether they’re doing things they shouldn’t be or not. Our generation was not held up to such a high standard. I’ve never friended my kids’ friends so I have no idea what kids are doing in our area. But if it imitates “real life” I’m sure there are plenty doing stupid things. The culture is not the best here and it is one of the reasons my D is looking to choose a school with kids from all over.

My son has never been one for social media. He has a facebook, rarely uses it but I did tell him to go through it and make sure none of his friends posted anything offensive or inappropriate and remove it since he joined the Tulane group. He has pretty strict privacy settings on it. Although we are not friends on FB, several of his friends have friended me. They really don’t even use it. Two years ago a bunch of kids in his class got in a lot of trouble for posting pics of underage drinking parties. (DUMMIES) and the principal saw them. Most of his friends now use Twitter but he never got into it. I told him to keep his FB just because I know from working at a college that many groups on campus still use FB to organize events and alert students to things that are going on.

Got accepted today!

Stats:

EA applicant
3.8 W GPA
30 ACT (31 superscored, don’t know if Tulane superscores ACT though)

I checked Gibson yesterday and I got accepted!

EA applicant
AP Scholar and National Achievement Semifinalist
3.65 weighted GPA
2030 on SAT
Not a lot of extracurriculars but I’ve been consistent with the one in my major (Musical Theatre)
School doesn’t rank but it’s a specialized high school

I sent in everything on the 25th of October. (Also would anyone mind linking me to the group? I tried googling but I can’t find the group. I’m assuming it’s “secret” on facebook.)

If you go onto Facebook search for Tulane University Class of 2018 and it should pop up. Then you will have to join and you’re in! I’ve been the only admitted student to post anything but I’m sure that once the admission season is coming to a close there will be lots of talk on there about majors, dorms, etc. VERY EXCITED! Lol.
