Class of 2018 Decisions

Congrats uppers. It is hard to know the context of that GPA, that is why the admissions people have much more info on each high school and what that all means. Certainly the 2240 SAT is impressive. You must have been quite happy when you saw those scores!

Best of luck with your college process. Let us know if you gt any merit money.

Congrats to those of you admitted this far! My d’s stats were not nearly as amazing as some on here so there is hope for all of you that don’t have super high test scores. The admissions folks seem to look at everything - just like they say. Good luck to those who have not heard!

Any advice for a prospective applicant who has not visited? We are most concerned with the “why Tulane” essay. Also, any thoughts on the personal statement? Thanks in advance.

Hi Big Daddy - I would suggest including in the essay any qualities of Tulane that put it on your list of colleges to apply to - the school’s reputation, quality of the department of interest, any faculty that you’re particularly interested in, the NOLA culture, or whatever else about it that appeals to you from all that you’ve read/heard. You could always mention how much you’d LIKE to visit, but haven’t been able to for logistical reasons. Best of luck!!

I submitted my application and test scores back in September but my transcripts weren’t sent until two weeks ago (which is the same time my application was marked “complete”) /:
Any ideas on how my timeline is playing out?

Bigdaddy - I agree with Gertrude, but also wonder if there was a Tulane event in your area you were able to attend. If not, then as Gertrude says, do extra research on the Tulane web site and see what it is about Tulane that seems special to you (or your child, as the case may be). So before even doing that, the student needs to think about what it is that they are looking for in a school and for their overall college experience, or at least some aspects of these, and then see what Tulane offers that makes it special.

So for example, if a student happens to be female and is looking to do research and develop leadership qualities, then the fact that Tulane has a Newcomb Scholars Program would be very attractive. If the student were looking into a business and finance career, then various unique aspects of the Tulane curriculum, such as the Burkenroad reports, would stand out. Things like that.

Of course New Orleans is fair game too, but you want to avoid the cliches such as “New Orleans is such a unique city”. So true, but doesn’t provide much insight.

lizlemon - These things are always hard to predict, but you are probably looking at something closer to the Dec. 15 deadline. Now watch, you will hear by Friday, lol. It really is impossible to know.

Fallen and Gertrude,

Thanks for the great info! I wish my D had expressed interest sooner. Seems like we toured the entire southeast. NOLA would have been a great trip.

Bigdaddy - Well, with so many schools out there some don’t come to one’s attention until later. It happens. Good luck with the process!

Very true - my D just added two biggies this week, after learning about a joint program that requires applications to both. And she was so close to done with paperwork.

Alright, have to fess up that I’m the one who showed her the program & encouraged her to add it to her list…sigh.

Actually, Tulane was on my watch list, but my W had some reservations about N.O. As my D’s list began to shrink, my W became more open to the possibility of sending D to the big bad Big Easy!

Also added U of Miami recently. Again, no visit.

Fortunately, my D is a great writer, so I’m pretty comfortable that her essay’s will be good.

“Any advice for a prospective applicant who has not visited? We are most concerned with the “why Tulane” essay. Also, any thoughts on the personal statement? Thanks in advance.”

Big Daddy – like you, TU was on my watch list early on but not so much for my kid. Kid wrote a reasonable but not outstanding why Tulane essay. I think it basically checked the box that the kid had spent some modicum of time looking into the school. Didn’t visit or attend any local events.

Kid got admitted quickly and with a nice schollie, which induced the kid to take a spring break trip to Nola. The rest is history. Probably helped that, among other things, we are out west and so maybe were geographically diverse/interesting.

Wife also had some reservations about crime/party-addled Nola, but she got over those.

still have yet to hear and it will be 4 weeks tomorrow since i submitted the EA priority application

Sounds good! She definitely has the stats for admission and a pretty nice scholarship. Of course the admissions process is more like voodoo (NOLA pun intended) than science so you never know. I’m sure she will whip up a good essay. Thanks again for the info. Fingers crossed.

14wilsc12- my son’s application has been marked complete since mid August and he still has not received an answer. This morning he was in the kitchen singing “all I want for Christmas is an acceptance from Tulane” hang in there an answer is coming!!

northwesty, may I ask what your kid’s stats were? You guys got such a quick turnaround!

I know it’s hard hearing about every one else getting in when you have been waiting weeks. I was in the same boat with D2 a year ago, constantly checking Gibson and thinking no news was bad news. She applied on 10/10 but didn’t get her acceptance until 11/27. And many kids in her school and camp friends in nearby towns got in weeks before she did. So try to relax and think positively. Best of luck to those still waiting, hope you hear good news very soon!

Another quick question. Teacher recs are not requested but can be sent. What do you suggest? We haven’t seen the recs, but assume they are pretty good. Should we send them?

Sure. Anything positive is worth sending.

Got accepted today with 22 grand in scholarship money. Sent in application the day before Halloween. For those interested I have 4.64/5 GPA, 740M 700CR 630WR, 4 on APUSH exam, 5 on AP Language, good extracurriculars (cross country, hockey, track, music, volunteering), decent essay and good recs. Good luck everyone!
