Class of 2018 Decisions

“northwesty, may I ask what your kid’s stats were? You guys got such a quick turnaround!”

My kid is a current soph, so it was a couple of cycles ago. Don’t remember the exact turnaround timing. We didn’t expect to hear from any early action schools until mid-late December, so we were pleasantly surprised when TU’s acceptance letter hit the mailbox sometime around Thanksgiving. 31 or 32 ACT equaled $22k (might be a bit tougher now).

Just sent my app in today and am very nervous/excited. My stats are 3.63gpa UW and 3.73 W and a 26 ACT. I know my ACT is my weak point but I am taking it again in December and am aiming for 28 realistically. My EC’s are great and I believe I am a great candidate for the community service award. Also, I am in NHS, Spanish National Honor Society, won President Volunteer Service Award, etc. Do you think I have a chance?

Thanks so much!

coryB11- Hard to know how they will take that 26, it is on the low side as you say. But the GPA seems good. Did you take many AP courses? Hopefully you can get the ACT up. Trying the SAT might be an option as well.

i applied on october 1st and was complete on oct 24th scea.
my stats are 4.07 gpa w 3.97 uw
sat 1850
ss, math, science, foreign language and national honor society plus high honors every quarter of high school.
outstanding rec’s and community service. plus i visited and wrote a GREAT why tulane essay
what do you think my chances are and when might i hear. know sat is a little low but i feel like the rest of my app is so strong.
oh also too AP us and AP gov 4’s on both tests

How many times have you taken the SAT? Did you take it again in October?

twice. that was my last and best test. I would have taken it again and prob done better but scea i had to have my scores in by 11/15
i did get rev’s from english and math teachers which i always got A or A+ in so they would see my performance in class in those subjects

Sounds to me like your GPA is great, rigor of coursework not a problem, you have demonstrated strong interest, and like you said your overall app is strong,. Your composite SAT superscore is slightly below the middle 50% of Tulane, which also means there are 25% of enrolled students with about the same or below. From what I’ve read on this forum, and makes a lot sense is that it is highly unlikely you will get denied, quite possibly accepted anyway, but worse case deferred to regular admission. Why not schedule another session of SAT’s or possibly ACT’s in case you are deferred? Then you would then be given the opportunity to demonstrate improvement and submit the new scores.

thank you. i have considered that scenario. I have looked at January 27th a possible date in that case.

I just got in this morning!
When will hear anything about financial aid?

lizlemon - Congrats. If you are going to get any merit based aid, that will be in the letter you will receive in a few days. For need based aid, you need to file the FAFSA and CSS forms. Those decisions don’t usually come out until March sometime, I believe, at least for most people.

I have had incredibly fast response time with our admin counselor Jeff even though this must be the busiest time of the year. He usually responds usually within a few hours…no exaggeration. I Find your response time it a little unusual.

lizlemon can you list your gpa/test scores

also what is the consensus on contacting admissions counselor if you haven’t heard to touch base and reiterate interest? it is my first choice and as i have said i have a strong app with slightly weak sat 1850

CalMom,

Of course, soon after I wrote that note on this board my son got a very quick response from his counselor. So he’s good. Again, overall we’ve found Tulane admissions to be the most efficient and most helpful of any of the schools to which he’s applied so far.

ACT - 31
GPA - 3.94
Pretty good EC and stellar essays

Anyone have Morgan England as their admission reps? If so, have you gotten your decision yet? She is my rep and I’m going on one month today with no decision…

SteveTX

I have her as my rep as well and it’s been a month since I completed my app. I haven’t heard a decision either

@SteveTx,

I’m a texan as well with Morgan England as my rep and no word yet. If it helps any, in an email conversation I had with her a while back, she said i can expect to receive a decision “In a month or so” and this was on October 29th.

DD just received Tulane email with link to Admitted Students’ site. Those of you waiting for this info-check your email. You don’t have to confirm enrollment to surf the site and they emphasize you don’t need to answer until May 1, but are welcome to do so.

D got her official acceptance letter and unfortunately no instant rebate off the sticker price. I now feel it may have been a bit to her disadvantage to get an answer on admissions so quickly (heard back within a few hours after app was marked complete on Gibson). A day after the letter arrived, she got her ACT results of 33. Her SAT’s were 710M/690CR/660W (2060). She has 3.8GPA in one of the top public schools in CT (Tulane already accepted 7 kids so far EA; according to D only one other is 1st choice- they all want to go to Georgetown, go figure). First quarter grades 4.3W/4.0UW with 2AP’s and Honors class (they only list one GPA for HS career; but prob. weighted). Has taken 11 Honors and AP classes total.

Is there really a realistic chance of successfully appealing to TU about any merit award? She can wait until January and include ACT score, full semester grades, and recommendation from Bio teacher (prospective major), none of which were yet taken into account since they didn’t arrive before the acceptance decision. I am discussing with D about timing of the appeal, since I am feeling a strong impulse to have her act now, except with 1st quarter instead of full semester grades. In previous posts, FC’s recommendation is usually to wait, but the only variable would be 1st Q vs. full semester. Maybe 33 ACT score isn’t enough to sway TU, but it is about equivalent to an SAT score of 2200, which seems to be a pretty solid improvement. Any additional advice or insight is welcome as to when is best and chances.
