Class of 2018 (yikes!) - Sharing,Venting, Etc

@dcsparent, the kids/parents lose their deposit money and the schools add to their “summer melt”. Some schools still take kids off their wait lists into August…

“academy awards”, prom, grad party, graduation, trip to Canada (on her own to hang with relatives,) then orientation visit at BALL State U. We are so excited for all our wonderful “end of year” activities and beginning of college we can hardly stand it. I am so relieved that the hard part of this year is behind us all…and now all we have in front of us is happy tears. Yipeeee!!!

You are right @goinplacesmomsD happy tears. I agree we are very excited. We are planning a trip to NYC to see Phantom of the Opera with Norm Lewis. My son played phantom last year so this should be a great trip. All the parties and summer musical he will be doing nothing but great summer times for him. We are excited to start planning for his dorm room purchases (probably me more than him).

Crying my eyes out…D’s last concert with the HS choir just ended…she rocked “I Will Survive,” and true to form, didn’t tell me that she had a solo…she loves (loved…oh no!) to surprise me…

Those are the nicest surprises @EastchesterMom. Congrats!!

“Senior Release Day” for my son is next Thursday… Graduation on the 24th of May. And tomorrow night is his very last Spring Concert. He’s been in chorus every semester since 7th grade. Luckily, my younger son (8th grade) has been bitten by the singing bug, so I’ll get a few more years in.

On another thread folks were talking about the Fall and when our kids go off to school. Sad and exciting all at the same time. Mine is going to Scotland- sight unseen, I might add! There will definitely be long periods of time when we won’t see him. I’ll be taking him over to get him settled in, but, oh that plane ride home will be a doozy!

11 days of classes left…senior project (writing poetry, songs, horse, fun stuff, sleeping til noon for two weeks) then back for graduation festivities and final musical festivities!

Last day of regular classes is today; it’s also college t-shirt day, when the seniors strut their stuff in their college raiment. AP exams next week…then the fun starts! Our seniors do internships with local businesses for the last 4-5 weeks of school. D will intern at Play Group Theater, where she was a camper years ago. Cabaret (not the show; it’s the Players Club kids singing or performing skits they write themselves that basically diss the teachers) is May 16; prom is June 5, graduation is June 27! D is on top of the world; a month ago, she was down in the dumps. One little acceptance changed everything.

Great story @ EastchesterMom. So glad it all worked out for her. Our graduation is June 28th then it is off to orientation on June 30th.

D just did her senior solo also. She sang “quiet”. Not a popular song, but wow, nearly every single person in the audience was balling. It is now my favorite song. She’s in a local show for the next three weeks and has another show lined up after that so i haven’t hit the last performance moment yet. Lord help me when I do. Fortunately about 7 years ago I began making her costumes, so now I have about 4 theaters that contact me regularly to make specialty costumes. For my d she has decided to pursue vocal performance, so maybe I can send her a concert gown every couple of months. Her 18th birthday will also be her first day of college…3 time zones away!! Is there a therapy page i can go to in august/September?

@Sguti40 I am a costumer too. While I do sometimes start from scratch, my specialty is to thrift various pieces (especially vintage), take them apart and create new things. Even when not working on shows I tend to go out and scout- you never know what you will find. So when we travel I often notice Goodwills etc, and when we were in FL for spring break a few weeks ago, I spied a one, demanded time to thrift- and bought two GIANT bags (Amazing 60s/70s vintage in FL!!). Fortunately we drove down, so there was room to get it home. I imagine my husband would have drawn the line at paying to check my thrift purchases on the airplane!

I sew the costumes too for the high school shows. And build the scenery which I enjoy a great deal.

I do the programs, track the student accounts and organize the tickets & house. One more year. I need to start training a replacement…

@Sguti40‌ my D also celebrated her 18th birthday the first week of school and in a different time zone. The cafeteria had a birthday cake you could buy along with balloons so I set that up. She was totally surprised and loved it.

I’m in charge of hot dog and hot pretzel procurement, preparation and sales. My husband and older D (who cut class on Friday afternoons 4 years and rushed back from NYU to help) hawk these and other goodies in our balcony concession the e

Sorry, I’m having a little trouble posting! What I wanted to say was that Show Weekend is a family affair in my house, and I’m sure gonna miss it!

Have you guys seen the web series “Submissions Only” - you gotta watch this show! Just google the name and watch the series. It’s about auditioning professionally once the kids are out of college. You’ll enjoy it.

Yes, it’s a cute webseries that started about four years ago. I’m sure there was a conversation a few years ago about it but that may have been before many of you joined CC. :)

Just started watching Submissions Only, don’t know how I misses it earlier, but loving it, actually binge watching, my favorite way. Fun way of ignoring the upcoming stress of next year.

Thanks for the recommendation! Now binge watching Submissions Only. So enjoyable.
