Class of 2020 (sharing, venting, etc)

Yes indeed, @KTVoice

@bisouu @bfahopeful My D is also going to UNCSA for design & production this fall. It just makes me sick to invest money into that state now, and I certainly hope UNC’s federal funding isn’t cut. I hope the lawsuits move quickly though the courts, repeal this heinous law and set a national precedent for LGBT rights.

On the upside, NC just got another blue voter who is going to vote that governor out of office! It is good to read about the protests at UNC, although I can’t find anything online about any protests specifically at UNCSA. Have you heard or read anything about UNCSA’s reaction to the bill?

As another NC resident, I am disgusted by this as well. And d and her friends are posting on social media to fight this! Rest assured that in the bigger cities of NC you will find far more social liberals than conservatives, but there are so many small town people voting for a bigger chunk of our state leaders that our voice is still losing the numbers game. Hoping this (after the last equality vote) is the last straw that will finally boot these narrow-minded people out. How embarrassing!

@craspedia, the students here had a very hard time voting in the most recent primary. They couldn’t use their student ids so do check the Forsyth County board of elections to see what your daughter needs to do to vote here in NC. I’m all for her help in getting the current gov out of here.

My D just got screwed out of her chance to vote for the first time in WI even after legally registering to vote there. We were not happy and she was very upset, but she will be prepared with her passport in hand in the fall for the general election. That new WI law is stupid! Buena suerte in NY!

@GSOMTMom We are spending the day before move-in at the DMV and Board of Elections to get her all hooked up with proper NC ID/Driver License and ensuring she is registered to vote. I plan to make an appointment with the DMV in advance. She knows her vote is going to count way more in NC than in our solid blue state/city.

@TNMTDAD Did they allow other students with passports to vote? Can your D get a WI Driver license? I watched them interview students in line during the WI primary on TV. It did not look good for them.

@craspedia, they allowed a student from Puerto Rico to vote with her passport card and her WI voter registration card! One of my D’s friends at Viterbo. Not even kidding. Which is fine. But, my D could not vote with her WI voter registration card and her Viterbo ID because the ID “did not have a date of issuance” or “a date of expiration.” It really did disenfranchise a lot of people. But, we will make sure she takes her passport back with her in the fall. >:) She can get an official WI State ID, but they did not get that information out in time.

So excited to be on the other side of decisions!! Happy for everyone who is down the home stretch!! Great things await our kiddos wherever they are headed!!!

I can’t seem to find this. Where should I go?

The situation my D. is facing is whether to accept Hartt or hold out a little longer to see if she’s accepted from the BoCo waitlist. (Yes, I understand about the deposit deadline, which of course we’ll meet if we’re still waiting.) Our main question at this point is does anyone ever receive scholarship money from BoCo if they’re selected from the waitlist? Does anyone on this forum have experience with this situation at this school? Thanks! And a million congratulations to those of you who are DONE with this process and happily planning for your student’s freshman year!

@fotokat - my d got scholarship money from BoCo, however, it was not comparable to what she received at other schools. She is declining, so at least one spot will be opening up. Good luck and pm if you want to know more about the scholarship.

Remember, that when someone declines an offer, it doesn’t necessarily open a spot for someone on the wait list. At most schools including BOCO (but not all…exceptions include CMU and Otterbein), they accept more people than spots available in order to yield their desired number. After that, if they still haven’t yielded the number they want in the class, they go to the wait list

@Fotokat BoCo scholarship money is merit (talent) based and not all kids that were accepted received scholarships. My son was accepted but did not receive a scholarship. And their financial aid package consisted only of the maximum federal student loan amount and then suggested parent loans to cover the remaining amount over the EFC amount. It was the only school that did not offer him any scholarship or meet the financial need.

Anybody know anything about Minnesota Duluth’s BFA MT program? I might put a deposit down on them while I wait for the Marymount Manhattan waitlist which is my top choice

Hi @allthatjazz12345. D had a great walk-in at Chicago Unifieds with University of Minnesota Duluth. It was a very positive experience and they encouraged her to apply. She did and was accepted. However, what we found out after some research is that there is an audition at the end of freshman year to truly get accepted to the BFA MT program. We liked the auditors who are both instructors at the University. The program sounded good. Just understand that there is an extra hurdle at the end of Freshman year.

So, my D got an email yesterday from one of the schools she was waitlisted for & telling her she was in - but, they gave her until 5 pm today to notify them of her decision. She emailed back to tell them thanks & she’s thrilled, but has a trip to one of the schools that had already accepted her this weekend and she couldn’t possibly make a decision like that before she finishes visiting her schools. What are the chances they will rescind? Has anyone ever heard of a school barely giving someone more than 24 hours to make a decision?

I thought that no college could require an accepted student to make a decision before May 1st – am I mistaken about that?

I think some schools specifiy such a policy of deciding quickly if you accept a waitlist position and are offered a spot. However I thought that was also for after the May 1 date.

@WTXMom, her e-mail back to them was probably enough for them to cool down. I would think. If they rescind before she gets a chance to visit and make an informed decision, they don’t deserve her.

@TNMTDAD - I hope you are right. It’s a terrific program that she was really disappointed to be waitlisted…but did they think she was just going to sit around waiting? We had to get on with choosing schools where she had sure things…
