I got the email too. Hopefully we all hear something soon.
What would be really frustrating for many is if they really do string everyone along until mid-March after sending that Financial Aid email. Hopefully the email is an indicator that things are moving faster.
I called the Financial Aid office and they confirmed that the email is unrelated. She saw in the system that my son has “not yet been admitted” and said that the Fin Aid Office has just begun processing the FAFSA, and that triggers the creation of the VIP ID. She said the two offices are separate.
Hope that helps.
@OceanIsle - thanks for the info! I was hoping that wasn’t the case, but am not surprised. Darn! Back to waiting…
My patience is decreasing more everyday!
I know! My D is ready to accept one of her other top picks she is getting annoyed over the wait…
I’m going to visit UTK again in 2 weeks and it could definitely sway my decision if I don’t hear back before.
Last week I requested to have my major changed to undeclared right before they took that off the portal. Today I got an email saying my request had been approved so I’m definitely taking this as good news and a move in the right direction. But also I’m not trying to get my hopes up either.
As mentioned on the other thread, the box on the portal is back - enabling a student to make changes to the application or withdraw it, etc. Has anyone heard of anybody receiving decisions? I forget when the hear-by date is for USC.
What a long and convoluted process this has been.
Week of March 8.
Is this when they are releasing decisions? Where did you hear this?
@cctalks It’s on the website admissions page.
@cctalks - we were also told by our local admissions rep that it would be the week of March 9-13th
Did anyone get a follow up financial aid email? It is for sure the portal we would go through to register for classes and everything else. Does this mean anything?
@cctalks , do you mean in addition to the one they sent out a few weeks ago?
No, we got a follow up one yesterday, stating that there was additional information requirements. It has a list of directions for when we sign into Self-Service Carolina,
- select “Financial Aid”
- select “Eligibility”
- select “USC Columbia” Campus
- select the USC Columbia 2020-21 aid year
the portal gives options for housing and class schedule, but won’t let us get very far. Just wondering why they would send out this login to applicants who haven’t heard back.
Right now is the time where all schools have either already or are about to starting sending out financial packets. South Carolina has to process it for everyone regardless if you get in or not because you chose them on your list of colleges. As annoying and misleading it is, they have to do it. I would not read into being able to see classes or housing options at all. i just want a yes or no now! Losing patience even more.
@user9167391 i knew your user name sounded familiar. Again congrats for getting into VT but this goes to show how random and messed up this whole admission process Is. My son got into USC with a merit scholarship Ea and gets waitlisted at VT. You get deferred at USC and get into VT His major was same as yours at VT and his GPA and scores were considerably higher . Again don’t take it the wrong way , I think it’s great you got in but it all doesn’t make a lot of sense. Wonder if they are flushing out OOS students to manage their numbers? He also got into NC State
Yeah it doesn’t really make any sense. I was surprised I got into VT but I believe it to have been for multiple reasons and the main one being that i’m OOS. I know they accept more from OOS applicants so the academic criteria is lower. They also do want that out of state tuition because colleges are money magnets. I do think they could be trying to flush out OOS students but something to remember is that everyone on College Confidential is not the entire pool of applications so we are missing a lot of numbers and extra information. I’m really sorry your son didn’t get in but i’m sure he has great other options if VT doesn’t work out. Colleges are honestly about flipping a coin these days. You never know what to expect from it. I’m extremely proud of myself as I have worked incredibly hard the past 2 years on grades after having a rough freshman year. There’s more to me than just the GPA and test scores and I realize you weren’t trying to offend me but it came off as if I don’t deserve it.
@user9167391 No I definitely think you worked hard and I do think that VT looks at a trajectory for how you did over the course of 3 years. It just is so strange that people who were deferred from other schools like JMU or SC or even NC State are now in at Tech. I honestly think overall VTs whole admission process including applications., dates etc was bad. And yes i realize that people on here are probably a smidgen of the general pool but its like a poll , a sample may really tell the story, Just curious are you leaning toward SC if you get in? My son loved U of SC and probably will end up there since he got a scholarship. He also liked NC State alot and UNC Wilmington
