Well, as mentioned above, in 2019, there were 6,707 applications to Ross. Wharton, Haas, Ross, MIT, etc. all have BBA programs. Cal Poly SLO has a undergrad business school, which is popular here in CA.
Some students know exactly what they want. Otherwise, choose LSA.
I somewhat agree. I do not think it is a good idea at all for a 17-18 y.o. to make this decision about what career they want when they havenât even started college and been exposed to the breadth of what the world is about. What if they change their mind? Sure, they can transfer out, but much less likely now theyâve made the commitment to Ross. How many adults on this forum are doing what they thought they wanted when they were 18?
First off⌠You donât have to go to grad school for business and you donât need Ross to go into business. Just getting a degree at Michigan and doing business things on campus and your drive will get you internships and jobs in business. Ross is just one avenue to get there.
I never went to business school or even took a business class but own 2 corporations.
If you want it then make it happen. Donât use getting or not getting into some program as an excuseâŚ
Got it? ?
On the topic of why a business undergrad? more broadly speaking you could ask that about any undergrad. Why computer science? Why biology? Why English? Yet most schools now ask students to make a guess when they apply. In fact, if you want to go into engineering, our college counselor told us you have to start picking the right courses freshmen year of high school (I think they were a little off, but there are choices that matter that early).
More specifically, business is actually a degree that draws across a wide range of topics and aims to build skills to help organize and synthesize actions. Students out of business schools take on a wide range of future roles in society. And Ross does not have majors - just general business. So in many ways there is more room to explore than in many other majors. The business degrees of today are very different from what they were 20 or 30 years ago.
Appreciate any discussion threads around making decision between UIUC Gies Vs UMich LSA ?
UIUC is instate for us so wondering if itâs worth to spend so much on UMich (OOS)tuition.
@Akar7878. Depends on what you can cleanly afford and what your end goals are.
First off congratulations. Both great acceptances.
We are also from Illinois (Chicago for us) and my son got accepted to both Michigan and UIUC. After weighting all the options Michigan became the clear choice but both were great choices for engineering.
Akar7878 I donât understand the choice. Geis is the business school at UIUC - is there engineering as well with that name? If the student is planning CS, then I donât think Geis matters in the consideration.
At UM, the CS in LSA takes the same CS classes as engineering, but not the other engineering courses. From what we were told by students and admin, the job outcomes, etc. are pretty comparable across the two groups. But the overall experience is different as pure engineering is just a different breed of student and degree experience. If you are comparing engineering at one to LSA at another, that introduces that variable. UIUC has some CS degrees where you mix CS with other fields, such as anthropology, I think (we only looked at them briefly). Those degrees may be closer to the LSA, but I think require kids to commit a lot earlier to their non-CS interests. I have been told at UM a lot of kids will do CS and lots of econ for example so they can do fintech. But they can figure that out a little later.
One huge advantage for Michigan is that you can start LSA and do a cross campus transfer into engineering if you decide later. Itâs a pretty simple process. Then you can change your mind freely. At UIUC this might be not possible at all.
If you can afford either fit also comes into play. The vibe, campus, culture at Michigan is very different then UIUC and one reason my kids at Michigan.
Neither school is worth going into large debt for.
Accepted after being deferred
-34 ACT/35 superscored, 5 on AP Calc BC junior year and 5 on AP Physics
-4.7 weighted GPA, 5 AP classes this year, 4 last year. Beyond AP level in math, taking Multivariable Calc and Linear Algebra.
-Out of state- Wisconsin resident, schooling in CT
I would say above average extracurriculars, plus 3 jobs, two of which are current
@Akar7878 Yes, congratulations on two fine acceptances!
Like Knowsstuff weâre from the Chicago area (the western suburbs) but my son got acceptances from Michigan Engineering and UIUC Business (Gies). My son chose Gies. He graduated May 2019 and is very happy with his undergraduate experience. He is currently employed as a financial consultant in Chicago.
If you have any questions feel free to message me.
My DS was deferred from School of Kinesiology. Should we expect a decision anytime before April or are they typically all released in early April? From what Iâm reading it sounds like some are being released earlier but that might just be Ross.
My daughter received an email on the 31st that her portal had an update yet when she logged in there was no update. Her friend got the same email and had an acceptance letter. Do they forget to upload the letters some times? Thereâs literally nothing different than what was there in December. We are on the West Coast so she can call tomorrow but just curious.
Hey guys,
I apologize if this question has been asked before, but would it benefit me to send a loci? I submitted the continued interest form pretty late, and I wasnât considering it (sending loci) because the portal said that no other communications will be considered. But now I feel like contacting my ao couldnât hurt⌠Is it a good idea to send one? Is it too late?

Call and report back. Will be interesting to hear. Hopefully her friend didn't get her letter âď¸?.

She called and the guy said he has no idea why she got the email as her two majors havenât made any decisions. Iâm a little skeptical with the students that just answer the phone and blindly answer questions. My older daughter is at SC and sometimes it takes 2 or 3 people to get to an answer and usually itâs once we get to the adult that does it for a full time job. LOL
Trying to encourage her to handle it on her own but I may need to make the call myselfâŚ
