No I set up my portal! But after that, nothing.
Hey guys,
Is it true that UMich actually yield protects high tier applicants during initial screening. I really want to get in but Iâm worried that Mich is going to defer me. I sent them an email saying I was extremely interested in attending after submitting my EA app, do you think this will help my chances in any way?
@PathophysiologyFTW Shoot⊠I hope that isnât true. I also am interested in attending if my top top choice doesnât work out but I never sent them an email⊠Iâm sure that will help you. RIP
âif my top top choice doesnât work outâ
lol. I donât know whether UMich practices yield protection, but if they do, that ^^^ is exactly why.
@momzilla2D I mean⊠can anyone really blame me? I bet there are thousands of applicants just like me who are pushing for a reach but still love UMich and would love to attend. I donât see the problem with that mentality.
Of course @benandjerrys101 of course no one can blame youâŠbut this is why they defer so many studentsâŠdeferring students a month while the ED acceptances withdraw their UMich apps give them a true sense as to who really wants to go there.
I would guess they defer 20k applications.
@benandjerrys101 No, I donât blame you at all. It would be incredibly risky to apply to only one school, especially of the very selective variety, even with great stats. Iâm just saying that is exactly the reason for yield protection, if UMich practices it (and I donât know if they do). Let that student see if they get into their top choice before offering them a spot.
Well, UMich, if youâre reading, I was deferred from my top choice so please help me LOL
Iâm Umich 2023 and my friend is Caltech 2023 and I got in EA to Umich and she got deferred and then accepted⊠I think they do defer kids who are âtoo smartâ but idk
@benandjerrys101 Noted. You are moved from defer list to accepted list. You are in! LOL
For everyone stressing about when decisions come out, umich has released decisions the Wednesday before break (this coming Wednesday) the past few years around 3 or 4 pm. Yes, they defer a ton of people and some people get deferred because their application wasnât even looked it. Good luck to all!
Since those results threads donât always get a tremendous amount of participation, probably because itâs another place you have to visit, for me, I plan to tally the stats from this thread, if everyone feels comfortable posting them here in this thread.
All I ask, is that you post the following, again, only if you feel comfortable:
- Result (accepted, deferred or rejected)
- Instate or OOS
- School applied to [LSA, CoE, Kinesiology, Nursing, SMTD, etc.)
- Preferred admission to Ross?
- uwGPA
- SAT or ACT score submitted.
I think thatâs everything. ? thank you.
Probably. But doesnât nearly every top university to some extent? Yield matters to them. IMO, your HSâs historical record of yield is important.
High stat students are both accepted, deferred, waitlisted and/or rejected. Lots of examples, but one parent had a kid with a uwGPA 4.0/SAT 1,600 and was deferred and rejected. The kid now attends CalTech.
My own kid is/was a high stat student and was accepted EA from CA. Somehow, the UMich people and the algorithms (and/or maybe itâs the essays) must be able to read/recognize those with the highest desire to attend. Also, the local HS has a very good yield too.
At least thatâs what I tend to believe.
One other thing. UMich accepts about 1/2 of all its acceptances during EA. They accepted a little less than 15,000 (EA and RD) apps last year out of a total of 65,000 (EA and RD) apps.
UMich accepts about 7,500-8,000 apps during EA. I assume they accept the âbestâ 7,500-8,000 EA apps. For the Class of 2022, about 40,000 of those 65,000 total apps were submitted EA.
@sushiritto
Do you know if the admissions people read the applications that were submitted way before the early action deadline first? I submitted mine in September and I heard a lot of people saying they do not even get a chance to read them with all the people who applied.
@hmilo394 they read ALL the apps, some multiple times. Just look at the website under Q&A. Iâd speculate they start reviewing them as a pool of apps, not as they arrive at UMich. But Iâm guessing.
My own kid submitted EA on Halloween 2017 and was accepted.
@sushiritto - yes multiple reviews per candidate. I seem to remember three from previous years but the selection process only says âmultiple evaluatorsâ at the moment.
For anyone curious about the process, the following link comes directly from UMich.

Where would we all be without @sushiritto ?!! Sushiritto thank u for ur help throughout this hectic time.
3 more sleeps until the big day!!
Just to ease your mind at our visit to UMich the Admin person made very clear that decisions would be out several days before Dec 24. I think his words were something like âIt would be cruel to announce on Dec 24.â So, I think Dec 18/19 makes a lot more sense (and 12/20 at the absolute latest).
Good luck everyone!
