Basically if colleges defer highly qualified candidates, which seems to be the case with many of the deferred ppl here, it increases their āyield percentage.ā This makes a college seem more competitive and thus more desirable. If you look up a list of schools that use it, Umich is on there. I would submit LOCI asap, especially for preferred admission people, so you can get a decision on the first wave on 2/1.
I heard today and was deferred and just wondering a couple things. First off, my stats were:
IS
LSA (neuroscience)
1450 SAT
31 ACT, but 34 superscore (i heard they consider your scores from each section)
4.0UW/4.33W (there were only 3 AP classes offered by my school I didnāt take)
Solid Essays, and great teacher recs
Strong EC, including making my own EEG scanner, Varsity soccer captain, varsity lacrosse, hours of tutoring, mission trip, freshmen leadership, NHS.
So back to the main point, I received an email an hour before my deferral that told me that they could not identify whether I was in state or out of state (because of the mission trip), and that my app had been flagged because of it. Do you guys think that this was the reason I was differed? The admissions person I talked to said it most likely was but Iād like other opinions.

Decision: Accepted
Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1490 Superscore (Reading 710, Math 780)
ACT (breakdown): 35 Composite (35 English, 33 Math, 36 on both Reading and Science, 10 on Essay)
SAT II: N/A
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.92
Weighted GPA: N/A
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity Volleyball (Captain Senior Year), Club Volleyball for Legacy 18U National Team, Big Sib (Homeroom Leader), Club Volleyball for Asphalt Green (Captain of the 17U Team), FLOW (Director for advanced team and SING!, which is a school-wide performance competition).
Job/Work Experience: Helped out at my motherās cafe, Menu Cafe in LIC, employee 3 summers in a row working 3-4 days a week on average.
Volunteer/Community service: N/A
Summer Activities: Was working at Menu Cafe with my mother, that was the only summer activity I could participate in as a result of the need my mother had for me
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8/10, for my personal statment; it was powerful and the ending had impact, but I feel like some sentences were awkward and could have been phrased better to avoid confusion. Transitions could have also been smoother between subjects within the essay. UMich Supps were 9/10 however, as I very specifically stated what I wanted to get out of the school and made my passions clear with little to no room for confusion, without sacrificing emotional impact. Maybe one or two run-on sentences, but thatās all.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: Physics Teacher, 9/10, I was very close with this teacher and I showed significant improvement in his class by the end of the year, which I feel is very important for any teacher trying to introdcue a new subject to kids. Considering the subject he taught me directly relates to the subject I plan to get a degree for, his rec is probably what the Admissions Officers at UMich looked at
Teacher Rec #2: AP US History Teacher, 8.5/10, this was a humanities teacher and thus didnāt really relate to my subject of interest, but I still was very close with him and got a fantastic grade in his class, proving my worth to him as a student. I also went above and beyond by doing all his extra credit assignments, which probably left a good impression.
Counselor Rec: I had a very strong relationship with my guidance conuselor, and he knew me on a more personal level because Iāve told him about the struggles Iāve gone through regarding my family and such. He had a lot of material to work with when writing my application, so I have no doubt he wrote an incredibly intimate rec for me!
Additional Rec: N/A

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Environmental Engineering
State (if domestic applicant): New York
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Large, competative public STEM school (requires a qualifying test score to get in)
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: around $100,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Being a hispanic and a female applying for the engineering school, which has a much lower ratio of female to male students than the general population at UMich, probably was helpful to my admission acceptance. However, the personality I refused to forgoe when writing my supplements was probably a refreshing thing for admissions officers to see. They may not have been written perfectly, but they were written honestly.
Reflection
Strengths: Test Scores, UMich Supps, Personal Statement, Teacher Recommendations
Weaknesses: Lack of comminity service, lack of diversity in summer activities
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Impressive grades at a nationally ranked high school where the level of difficutly is tenfold compared to the average highschool. Also, my supplements and essay werenāt written to try and say how good a candidate I was, but they were written to honestly reflect the type of person I am
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Binghamton University and Bard College, applied to McGill but have not yet recieved a descision
General Comments: Good luck to everyone who applied this year! Youāre all amazing people who, no matter where you go, wil be amazing students!
