@weathergirl10 Congrats on your DD making to USC live auditions, I was told during the open house there that they are very picky with who they choose for live auditions and even more selective from the live auditions. When is she auditioning? My DS will be there on Sunday 1/26. We are doing the UCLA audition on Friday 1/31 and Pace later that same day. How was the Pace audition for your DD?
Towson came through with 10000 Provost scholarship bringing that tuition down to 28000…comparable to our flagship Umass Amherst. Still waiting on USF dance acceptance from video submitted Dec 30th…received 9000 merit from there. $30,000 from Dean, but still 29000. Don’t think she will receive anything/enough from Ohio State or UIUC. Auditioning at Montclair later this month. Really don’t want D going into major debt for undergrad when most likely she will go to grad school. Not sure if Rutgers will give her anything. Such a waiting game!
@NevrMynd51 Congrats to your DS as well! Yes I heard they were very picky and the live auditions will be just crazy–but a great experience! My DD will be at USC on Sat 1/18 and UCLA 1/31. Pace audition went very well at the Oct. intensive, but there were no cuts or interviews so hard to determine outcome from that perspective.
@weathergirl10 Please keep me informed on how the USC audition goes, as we have the next weekend. I know that there are no cuts as they have already done their cuts through the prescreen process, now just have the acceptance and rejections, so stressful. Did Pace have the tap section at the intensive? I heard that they had one at the live audition and my DS is so stressed out about that because he has no real tap experience.
@NevrMynd51 Yes of course I’ll post an update! Pace had a tap section at the intensive but it wasn’t too difficult and there were many dancers who weren’t tappers. I’ve heard tap doesn’t make or break your audition and it just depends on what spots they’re trying to fill in the program overall. Hope that helps! My dd is very happy to get to a live audition for USC, but it’s extremely selective so we’re approaching it as an experience without expectations. My dd is definitely more anxious to hear back from the other schools she’s applied to. Waiting is torture.
Whittling down the list…dd has on her to-do list for this week to notify the schools she is definitely saying no to: UNC-Greensboro, Temple, Towson, Marymount Manhattan (she never even did the audition there). Still on the list are Montclair, VCU, Ohio State, and Adelphi. Nice to be down to a more manageable number of schools!
It is great to see all of the comments in these threads as this has been a stressful, long process already! Our daughter has applied to many schools, has been accepted to U of Minnesota, Colorado State U, Grand Canyon University, AMDA in LA, auditioned at Pace in December- waiting as many of you are and also video auditioned for Chapman and waiting on that… Such a process, fun and exciting but stressful and expensive non-the less… Really is hopeful for Chapman, however depends on scholarship/merit as it is so expensive…
For NYU TISCH DANCE, has anyone heard anything about the weight admissions places on gpa? Are they more flexible with dance majors for admissions? I’ve heard they are, but to what degree I don’t know…
@weathergirl10 In speaking to one of the dance program recruiter, I was told that they do place a pretty significant value on GPA and little to no value on SAT/ACT scores. Was told that reporting of standardized test score wasn’t necessary, unless you are attempting to double major (highly frowned upon)/minor in an “academic” field. Now, I just want to say that DS decided not to apply so I haven’t followed up with the dance depart or admissions, so if anyone has additional information feel free to correct me!
@weathergirl10 , my D did not submitted ACT or SAT for Tisch ED1 since it was optional. I do not know how much they weigh on GPA, assays, or ECs.
We asked the department regarding double majoring; they do not recommend starting it during the freshman (1st) year.
Thank you @dancemom2024 and @NevrMynd51. My dd didn’t submit her test scores either. I’ve heard the same regarding gpa, but just not sure exactly what a decent gpa is to them (for dance). If you had a great audition, it’s hard not to keep guessing…the waiting struggle is real!
Accepted into USF BFA yesterday. Very happy about this option for her…especially with the green and gold scholarship. Temple gave a small scholarship of $5K so that is not feasible. I feel that I probably should have encouraged D early on to take ACT. Her SAT of 1330 was not enough. She literally killed herself over the last four years taking honors, AP, running XC and track, and dancing 20+ hours per week. Not sure if it was really necessary. However, when deciding between taking a princeton review to prepare for a test or going to a summer intensive, the summer intensive won out.
Montclair audition in a couple of weeks. Plus still waiting on Connecticut College. But basically down to USF, Towson, and UMass Amherst.
@Massmom72 Congrats on the good news from USF!
It’s so hard not to second guess! My dd is seriously considering Montclair State, and we were hopeful (given her stats and theirs) that she’d get some good merit aid. Well, it turns out the highest merit aid that they give for OOS students is the National Student Scholarship, which gives you in-state tuition–but that honestly doesn’t help our bottom line at all, since she would already get in-state tuition at a dance BFA student. So it seems ironic that she may end up at a school where the extra effort to up her ACT score and all that careful work on her academic application don’t end up making much of a difference anyway!!
Also, I don’t know if it’s any consolation, but if your dd really wants a conservatory-level program, it’s not Temple. It looked great to us on paper, but the visit/audition made it really clear that it wasn’t the program for my dd. Although at this point my dd is about ready to take Towson off of her list, it definitely felt like a stronger program for a serious dancer than Temple.
Hang in there to all of us!!!
So, audition 1 off the board (UCI) and DS really liked the small program on a larger campus feel. He enjoyed the auditions and although he said he made some minor mistakes, he felt he had a good showing of himself. They didn’t say when we would get word of acceptance into the dance program itself but mentioned that everything would be tied-in to the academic acceptance which comes out sometime in March! Now, it’s on to USC! Good luck to all of us who are waiting for answers, almost unbearable!
Does anyone write audition thank you notes? Seems awkward to write to an audition panel. Maybe to the head of the department or to someone who gave you personal assistance? Handwritten or email? Include headshot or no? I’ve read it’s customary for Musical theater majors but not for music majors, so just wondering what is appropriate for a dance audition. Thanks!
@brightwriter My daughter did send a couple of emails to dance department heads when she particularly enjoyed the audition. She kept it short and to the point, but they were sincere (she didn’t email after every audition, that is).
Thank you @mom2adancer that makes sense and is very helpful.
Glad to see everyone is as stressed as I’ve been! This is a crazy process. Auditioned at U of A (accepted academically, not dance - she was sick the weekend she auditioned so not really surprised), Chapman (accepted academically and dance with Presidential scholarship), Purchase (not accepted), NYU (made the cut, waiting to hear), Marymount (accepted academically with Presidential scholarship, made cut at auditions for BA, but believe she really wants BFA - waiting to hear final outcome). Since she was accepted at Chapman (one of her top programs) has decided we are done. Hooray! Just need to hear from the other two and she can make a decision.
D just received acceptance to Marymount for BFA in Jazz-- she auditioned 1/25
@gmfalv congratulations to your D on her MM acceptance! They notified you quickly! I wish all the schools were that fast…what was her impression of the program? My dd will be auditioning there soon as well.
