Clemson Admissions - Class of 2023 DISCUSSION

@Tuxrd2 Colleges have a way of recalculating GPA. Here in ME we have a 100 pt scale. 4 pt bump for an honors class and 6 pt bump for AP. No way out kids can get anywhere near a 5.0 let alone a 6.0. And a 92 is a B so it seems like grading is different everywhere.

Very true @Tuxrd2, which is why I have continued to encourage my son not to blow off his easier classes, and go for those higher points whenever possible. I’m glad my daughter didn’t have the SC scale when she was in HS in Georgia, because as a high anxiety perfectionist kid she would have been miserable with a low A, which is ridiculous LOL. I am not fond of the SC scale for that very reason! Luckily my son is even keel and just rolls with life refusing to buy into the pressures of academia in his SC HS!

@mamawitch yes thats true but several AO’s told me that they don’t recalculate GPA given the volume of applications they get. It would take too much time to re do them all. So they look at class rank first as a jumping point and I guess recalculate as needed. I guess really it just means that when people post their stats here and include GPA - it means nothing.
@SweetFreedom It would absolutely drive me insane to have to worry about every single percentage point. I bet the teachers don’t like it much either.

@Tuxrd2 @SweetFreedom That sounds similar to our grading scale. It’s a 100 pt scale so as you said a 95 is worth more than a 94, a 96 is worth more than a 95, etc. There is no conversion to a 4, 5, or 6.0 scale. My sons GPA is 97.386W. He is 27th out of 197 students. So #26 could have a 97.4. I guess it’s all what you’re used to because this scale just seems the most accurate to me!!

At my daughter’s school an A is 94-100 and at my boys’ school an A is 93-97 (98-100 is an A+). There are huge differences between how much credit you get for college prep versus honors versus AP courses. There are also limits on the number of APs you can take. All of this is why I am freaking out over GPAs. Plus, the schools do not rank. I feel like SAT is the only thing my kids have going for them (and their scores are good but not great 1210, 1250 & 1360). Being from OOS, I don’t know that Clemson will have a true sense of the academic reputations of the schools my kids attend. I wish someone would just put me out of my misery. I know we are not supposed to get our hearts set on one school but reality is that we have all done that. My triplets and I are ALL IN for Clemson and the waiting just sucks.

I hear you @4n2yrs. My sister in law lives in GA and 90-100 is an A etc and that converts to a 4.0 regardless of where you fall in the 90-100 range, plus if it’s an AP that makes it a 5.0. My daughter will be applying along with my nephew next year and there’s no way her GPA could compare to his. Plus my kids aren’t allowed to take AP classes until Junior year and my nephew has taken them since freshman year. Colleges get a school profile from your HS when you apply so they have an idea of rigor. Schools have so many different ways of grading that colleges have to have an idea how to compare them. I know there are 100pt scales, 4, 5, 6, 7pt scales and some of the schools around me don’t even have grades!!! It’s some standards based grading system. Crazy…

@mamawitch At my daughter’s school a 90 is a B+!!! An A- is 91-93. So what my daughter get a 3.50 for (a B+ in a college prep course), your nephew would get a 4.00 for!! It makes it impossible for my kids to compete with these astronomical GPAs some schools are giving out. It’s very frustrating. I know the schools do send “profiles” to colleges with the kids’ transcripts but in a big school like Clemson, I hope they have the time to really look at them.

I have asked these questions before but…

 1. Does anyone know if Clemson looks at the progression of a student's grades from Freshman to Senior year? and
 2. Does anyone know if OOS students can be offered the chance to Bridge to Clemson?

@4n2yrs not sure about grade progression, my son emailed the admissions office that same question yesterday & has not yet heard back. He didn’t have a great Freshman year due to frequent changes in his ADHD meds and trying to find the right dosage for HS. It’s wasnt terrible, he had a 3.0 but not as good as his Sophomore & Junior years. He is a legacy so I’m hoping that helps. As far as Bridge for OOS we are in NJ and a friend of my sons was offered Bridge last year, so yes OOS can be offered Bridge from what I’ve seen and heard in past years.

I agree @4n2yrs It’s very stressful. My son had a handful of 92’s which are B’s at his school, but would be the same as 100 at my nephews school. But we don’t convert to any other grading system so his overall GPA is a 97. It’s very exact where he goes to school.

This will all be over in 1 month!!! At least with Clemson. My son applied to a lot of schools so we have decisions coming through March.

@NAL112576 - THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! My son was not diagnosed with ADHD until late in his sophomore year so his freshman and sophomore year grades were NOT good (2.10). I feel SO GUILTY! I had him tested in 3rd grade (at his teacher’s suggestion) and they told me he didn’t have ADHD so I thought that was the end of it. I knew he was struggling mightily in high school and spoke with his counselor, teachers and doctor about it but it was not until second semester sophomore year that I was finally able to convince them that something was wrong with my son. We took him to for a detailed psychoeducational evaluation (ALL DAY 9A-4P testing) and the results came back that he positively DOES have ADHD with a severe delay in his cognitive processing speed. Confession: I think I’m so dead set on the triplets going to Clemson because if they don’t get it, I’m afraid it will be my fault for not insisting he be re-tested sooner. Nothing worse than feeling like you blew it as a Mother. :frowning:

P.S. We did explain all of this to one of the admissions counselors at Clemson and provided her with a copy of his doctor’s report (with 27 pages of objective testing results).

@4n2yrs I completely understand how you feel but I would not blame yourself. If the Drs. early on said he didn’t have it then why would you not go along with them, they’re the Drs right? My son was diagnosed at a very early age but he was in a public school system which academically he breezed through 1st-8th grades and then transitioned to a very competitive private all boys high school that did not provide some of the same accommodations that the public school system did & began to struggle as soon as he started Freshman year. It took a long time to get the right dosage of medication. Hopefully your disclosing all that to the Admissions office helps. We were just in Clemson this past weekend, we walked in National Championship parade (my father played for the Tigers in the late 60s). The admissions office was closed when we went by to ask the grade trend question so he emailed them instead but no response yet. Good Luck to you and your triplets!

@NcAb11 @PAtoSC @excitingtimes @gotigers2023 and anyone else that the hack worked for.

How long did it take to get your envelope after the message changed? I noticed the change on Friday and nothing yet. I’m worried it’s a fluke. But it’s also killing me keeping this secret!!!

@NAL112576 - Thanks so much for your kind words. Congratulations to your Dad!!! He must be ONE PROUD TIGER!!! I will pray your son gets admitted also. Hope to meet you on campus some time!!!

@4n2yrs Thanks! It’s definitely an exciting time to be a Tiger!

@mamawitch I noticed my son’s status changed on a Thursday evening but his letter didn’t come for a full week thereafter. We are in PA. I too kept this knowledge from my son and it was worth the painful wait. The look of pure surprise and excitement when he saw the envelope was great. Have your phone ready to videotape. I’m sure good news is coming soon.

I noticed my son’s status change on Friday. At first there was an error, then I tried again and the Welcome to Clemson page showed up asking for the number in the acceptance letter. However, I checked it again yesterday and today and it has gone back to “unable to determine status”. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas as to why it would change?

Oh no @Leaddog That’s my fear!!

Does anyone know if it’s possible to receive a merit scholarship if you aren’t accepted until February?

@ConfidentialUser71 I commented earlier about only seeing scholarship postings between November and January for class of 2022. I was just going through old threads and saw one with February 15 notifications (nursing - $7500).
