Clemson Class of 2028 Official Thread

4.0UW/5.2W, 31 ACT (36 English, 35 Reading- she’s an English Lit/Writing major), Class Rank #5 out of 515. She did not get notification of merit in her acceptance letter, it came later. I’m guessing it’s a result of her class rank/GPA and quite possibly when/if they read her personal statement. She’s a very good writer. She got a little merit at UF as well, likely for same reasons- it’s definitely not from her total ACT score (she only took once and withstood my prodding to take again to improve her math/science score,).

My financial aid package had an out of state grant for $17,500. I also previously got $6,500 in merit. I wasn’t expecting anything after the merit, honestly.

We can’t access the aid form. It’s asking for a bypass code from the IT help desk. Is anyone else having this problem?

Same here.

It means you have to talk to IT but they don’t open until 12. My son has moved on at this late date anyway.

If trying to access via an iPad or phone, I spoke to IT yesterday and the iRoar app behind Clemson’s VPN doesn’t work on an iPad although they gave me a work around by downloading the “AnyConnect” app from Apple Store.

Once app is downloaded, use your Clemson ID and PW, then where it asks for 2nd PW type in “push”. Once you do that it should then show notification that duo app is trying to authenticate, so you go into duo authenticate app and approve. Once you approve, you then go back to AnyConnect app and accept.

Once these steps are completed you should be able to log right into iRoar and see your Fin Aid Offer. Process is not as complicated as it might seem and I am in no way an IT type person.

After figuring it all out, we got into iRoar only to see our daughter was offered a $5,500 “loan” as OOS student. A total lead balloon, wonk, wonk type offer.

Congrats on merit offer!

Still can’t figure out Clemson’s OOS merit criteria as our OOS daughter is 3.9UW, 33 ACT (35 English, 35 Reading, 31 Science, 30 Math) and her HS doesn’t rank. She’s accepted into Honors College, however, she’s a business major but hasn’t received any merit from Clemson. I am guessing the selected major may be the variable impacting her.

I was on the phone with IT for thirty minutes yesterday trying to resolve my problem. It was definitely not a problem on my part, but something they had to do so that we could access the system (and it took the guy quite a while to figure it out).

We were very surprised to receive a totally unexpected $16k grant on top of the $8k merit we already knew about. I had written Clemson off as beyond our reach, but now it’s a possibility and we only have until Wed to decide.

I’ve been told that a lot of it depends on the ranking of the school attended also. Clemson relies heavily on their own internal rankings as to the difficulty level/grade inflation of the school. In their opinion, not all 4.0 GPA’s are equal which is why they don’t have a “set” merit schedule like many universities. Schools with strong reputations usually have students who receive merit at those high GPA’s.

The exact same situation with my kid. Originally, we were told that she was getting $8k in merit, but when we saw the financial aid letter, she ended up getting a total of $24k. However, my kid has her heart set on UF, so we are 99.9% sure that is where she will be headed too. Even though UF gave her only a small merit, the cost will only be a little more than Clemson (even with Clemson’s $24k merit).

Agreed as most schools look at prior performance of students from an applicants high school. Pretty confident her school’s curriculum is looked at favorably as it’s a college prep school with class size of 200 and the middle 50% for ACT is 33-35 meaning 25% or 50 of the 200 seniors scored a 36.

I don’t think Clemson gives that much merit, it sounds like financial aid (every student is offered the $5500, but subsidized vs. unsubsidized is based on income).

I’m not sure bc the money offered was called a merit scholarship for some of it and an out of state tuition waiver for another portion. We also got the $5500 loan. I was surprised bc we typically have not qualified for any need based aid.

Everyone gets that amount offered that fills out the FAFSA

correct - the student loan portion.

Does anyone understand the college loans stuff? I didnt complete college as I ended up getting a job in insurance and wouldnt use what I was going to school for so I dropped out. I was there for 2 years but never had student loans because I made good grades in highschool and went to an instate school and lived at home. So all the loans are foreign to me.

So daughter is getting a military benefit (Chapter 35) which basically says she gets in state tuition even though she is out of state. So we at least have that. We werent offered anything else so we know she will have to take out some smaller loans to cover the additional amount. I would love to be able to say that we will just pick up that cost but we are not in any position to do that, but also, she could have went to an in state school for free due to state benefits and having HOPE grant ect. We told her if she picked an out of state school then the loans are hers and hers alone. So how can she even get a loan on her own? Do we have to apply for the parent loan? Do we have to co-sign? This is all very confusing for us but we do not want to take on her debt when its not necessary debt, but instead debt she has chosen.

Every student who completes fafsa is eligible for $27,000 in federal loans over 4 years, income is taken into consideration if they are subsidized or unsubsidized (interest starts immediately). After that, there are federal parent plus loans (usually higher interest than private) or private loans in the student’s name co-signed by a parent (if qualified). We use private for lower rates, plus our lender allows co-sign release after one year of repayment (we have 5 kids, the 2 oldest have already removed us). You can use loans to pay for off campus housing.

Anyone know what the cutoff date usually is to get a suite, like McCabe or Holmes?

I have zero idea so do not take what Im saying as facts, however, on another board on facebook someone said they usually go the first day that signups open. Again, I dont know if thats true or not.

Haven’t heard if anyone getting offered of waitlist. Anyone have an update?
