clemson is in my daughter’s top 5 and the deferral is a bit disappointing. if it’s truly because ea is fairly new, not sure outcome for uf ea round will be any different. and uf is higher on my daughter’s list.
Agree. With such a heavy emphasis on ED/EA over the past few years, kids end up going with one of these first options. Luckily Clemson RD comes out in February, so we will wait and see. UGA is tougher bc they don’t release until mid to late March. Many schools start housing picks in early March. By that point kids are likely to be engaged with the school where they are already accepted.
Congrats to all the new tigers!! And hugs for those with a deferral. I was certain my kid would get a deferral last year and even basically convinced my kid of it too . So we were shocked when she got in.
Last year so many people would say, they end up exactly where they are meant to be and I can’t agree with that more.
Reading all of the comments above I think the factor everyone is leaving out is the class ranking. So last year I posted about this. I live in Georgia about 45 minutes from Clemson. I am a photographer. I was shooting photos for a family in October of last year and they mentioned they were from Clemson. I mentioned my daughter had applied there. The husband had previously been in admissions and had recently moved over to something else I think it was with scholarships or something like that (can’t remember) but anyways I asked him if I could give him my daughters stats and see what he thought. This is how it went:
Me: she is TO is that going to make or break
Him: if she applied to a closed major it could bc most in a closed major share their score but in an open major it isn’t as big of a factor unless the other numbers are super close for everyone applying
Me: other numbers? She is 4.0 uw /4.3 w.
Him: ok but what is her class ranking?
Me: too 8%
Him: yep she is fine she will get in
So the fact that the only two numbers he really needed to determine was her gpa and her class ranking says a lot! And sure enough she did get in EA.
So for those deferred and not understanding I would ask what their class rank was and see if that is maybe why and if your school doesn’t class rank just know that they kind of do. Whether there is some type of online system to show the number is students at schools or the guidance counselors idk. But hang in there a deferral is not a denial. Tons got in at RD in the spring last year. Hugs to you all!
I don’t think they reject in this round, just accept those who have certain stats.
I don’t think they reject, but Clemson takes a lot of deferrals in RD, I think more than most.
I like analyzing stats and I can’t find a common thread of those who were accepted and those you weren’t.
My D25 was accepted, her stats: OOS, 3.96 UW (one B+), 4.52 W, 12 AP/DE, top 10%, good ECs, business major
She knows three other kids who were also accepted, all three went TO, all three were top 20%, but not top 10%, probably with GPAs around 4.25-4.3, all three had good ECs, one business, one engineering, one I think undecided. I saw a lot of kids with better stats who didn’t get accepted.
Dorm selection priory at Clemson is based on when the application was submitted. My daughter chose an LLC partly because she applied to Clemson very late on a whim, I believe she would’ve been last to select a room.
I believe there were a few early in this thread who mentioned denials?
Deleting the first part b/c the info I was given in September has changed…
Fall housing applications open on Feb 12th and room selection is in May. I briefly looked in my DC’s portal and it looks like you first have to accept the offer to the school before registering for housing.
I guess I didn’t see any of them
In State daughter accepted for nursing with a scholarship. She is a Palmetto scholar (top 6% class ranking). She is over the moon happy. She applied the first day applications opened.
Many many applicants will get good news in February. If you were deferred for a closed major but are open to other majors/careers and really want to be at Clemson, you can edit that choice and stand a really chance for Feb decisions.
Interesting, that was not mentioned on any parent pages, folks are not going to be happy, so many get their applications in on the first day for this reason. So housing is going to open for all on May 1, when all have already accepted? Students select their exact rooms, I can’t imagine the system handling that many students selecting at the same time. My other kids’ colleges didn’t have students pick their rooms or dorms, had a ranking system.
How do we determine which majors are closed?
Google search.
Nursing, health science, architecture, and some communications studies is what I have been told. I spoke with the admissions folks in regard to Nursing majors, and they are limited on acceptance due the limited clinical seats/capacity they currently have.
Thank you for sharing this information. Reviewing the stats reported here for accepted and deferred students last night this was the conclusion I came to - that EA decisions are made based on GPA and class rank. Lots of TO and lower test reporting acceptances for students with good GPA and high class rankings. Clemson I note make a big deal of reporting % of students ranked top 10% etc. Far less weight on test scores - their range for SAT and ACT is relatively low for their ranking. Very different weighting importance to other colleges for EA.
And do you state this intent and the changed major on the Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI)? Or do you notify someone in admissions? I’m assuming business/marketing has a lot more slots available. Thank you.
Thank you!
Honestly, I don’t know. We asked in the chat back when DC was applying and they told us they wouldn’t be using application date. I called and was told the same thing a few days later. However, I just went through the housing page and the video at the end still includes application date as a factor. So, either they changed their minds or haven’t updated the video.
You make the change in the portal/application online. I don’t know if you can do that right after this round of decisions or if there is certain date/time that opens up for edit, but I do know it can be done.
There is also an admissions directory for all majors with contact points. They are glad to talk to you and give you honest answers and advice. They do not make online changes for you though.
