Coca-Cola Semifinalist Application 2012!

For the Coca-Cola Semifinalist Application, can we repeat some of the School Activities as Volunteer activities as well? Because I’m in my school’s blood drive club, and we volunteer at blood drives during the weekends…so which one should it go under, or can I list it in both?

And also…are all of you guys filling up all the lines they give?? I can’t believe they have 20 lines for just School-related activities!!!

Thanks!

I did both. I wrote about the clubs I’m in, and then I explained some of the volunteer work I did through the club. Also, I will not be able to fill up all the lines. I’m not even sure if my school has twenty different clubs… hahaha.

Congrats! I’m a semi-finalist, and I didn’t repeat my clubs/activites info under my volunteer info even though some overlapped. However, it sounds like yours are somewhat different. :)

I also didn’t fill all the lines underneath the clubs/activites section; I’m home schooled, and there is no way I could participate in 20 twenty different clubs. I suppose Coca-Cola just wanted to give everyone the opportunity to list everything.

WOOT! I’m glad a thread was made on this! I personally included them separately. Yea, all of my boxes are filled ~

Do you guys know what you’re going to talk about for the three 500 word essays? Want to throw your brainstormed ideas out there ( here) for everyone to see? : )

I have no idea what to write about for the “person that inspires you” question. I’m also not a huge fan of the extended essay (mostly because I had a hard time coming up with something to write about). You?

yea the piece of art/ person who inspires you essay is getting to me too… I really want to talk about my mom but they don’t want a person from your extended family. I’m looking through a couple of paintings about overcomng hardships but I haven’t found a good one yet.

And i’m focusing on 1 really big leadership project I did with the Vietnamese community even though I have quite a few. How are you forming your leadership essay ? : (

Leadership essay? Is that the one on a community service activity you do? I wrote that one already. It needs some refining, but I wrote about an experience I had during my internship at a local museum. I may change it and write about my work with orphans in Ukraine instead.
Maybe write about your mom in the “family background” essay. BTW… if anyone wants a peer editor, don’t hesitate to message your essays. I love reading student work! I promise not to sabotage!

Quick question guys-

I wrote a very solid essay to get selected as a semifinalist, and I was wondering if I could use the same essay as a semifinalist for the extended essay. It’s by far my strognest topic and something that conveys all the qualities they listed…should I go for it? Or will they recognize it?

powerfuldog,

Correct me if I’m wrong, but we didn’t have to write an essay for the original app?

I didn’t screenshot my original app (lesson learned…I have screenshot every app since then), but I’m pretty sure there was no essay.

In general for other scholarships though - I don’t think it would be bad to repeat the same topic/use the same essay if you feel that’s your strongest? Although I think if an original app says 250 words and the next round allows 500, obviously you’d want to adjust.

hey guys! for some reason the certification box is overlapping the first short essay topic for me, but i know its there because i can kinda see the outline of some words at the top. idk bottom line is i can’t see the first essay topic or the word limit for these (if it even provides one)…
could someone copy and paste the exact words from the first essay topic for me pleaseee? THANKS SO MUCH!

I would just email coca-cola (the email is given in the directions) and have them email you a new form. But the question is “choose the community service that is most meaningful to you and describe how you and your community benefited from your involvement.”

Speaking of the app…

I saved everything onto my computer but when I do that, it pushes the last line or so onto a new page? So a form that is supposed to be one page becomes two? It’s just the very last line though - I think it’s the last line in gray that just says Coca Cola Scholars Fondation? Should I worry about it? I’m not on my own computer right now so I can’t check what it says but I feel like it shouldn’t even be noticable? I can’t seem to get the margins smaller so it will fit…

Also, I forget if I read this or not…but if we mail it in before January 18th can we call and confirm it has arrived? I just get paranoid that it won’t get there and will get lost in the mail…

THANKS! is there a specified word/ character limit?

What are you guys writing about for the “choose the community service that is most meaningful to you and describe how you and your community benefited from your involvement.” question?

Should I talk about my founding a local immigrant help organization or something about my fundraising 25k for sex trafficked youth in cambodia? I feel the Cambodia one sounds more prominent but … I don’t know it’s not really my community that I’m helping.

OH BY THE WAY, DID YOUR MAIL CONFIRMATION ( not email) COME IN THE MAIL YET?

fleurs12, I think the app just says to keep it in the space provided - but double check that to be sure.

And tralala100 - No I haven’t got my confirmation in the mail. I don’t think a semifinalist list is posted online. I hope they do send tangible mail though!

Re: the OP’s questions…
I was kind of wondering the same thing. Most of my activities are service of some kind. I felt like some of them needed more explanation than the volunteer work section allowed so I kind of picked and chose where to put things based on that…it was really kind of arbitrary otherwise.

And no way do I have that many things to put!

Another question…where it says “non-school related activities; special talents or skills” what kinds of things are you putting for the “special talents or skills” bit? I have a lot of lines open in that section and would like to add more but I don’t really know what is appropriate.

ShorecrestHS22…

The “special talents or skills” part…hmm…that’s tough…

I mean, I don’t think it’s appropriate to put “I can tie a cherry stem with my tongue!” obviously…but I mean…if it’s a reasonable and legitimite talent or skill then I’d say go for it? I’ll have to reread the app but if knit or something I’d put that?

Do you guys think it will be ok to take up two lines to write awards/positions if were not going to take up all the space for that many activities anyways?

With the volunteer work… for the part where it says volunteer work undertaken in 2011, should I just put anything new I started doing in 2011 then in the other section list the things I started prior to 2011 even if I still did them in 2011? It is kind of confusing. Thanks and good luck everyone!!

^same here. I’ve been involved in groups that volunteer since freshman year so do I include them in the prior?
