Colby RD 2024

My son was accepted.

What I’d like to say to those who did not get accepted that it seems to be very random. All of these kids are exceptional and from my limited experience is seems that the individual schools know the type of student they want and one year you may be it and the other year you may not be.

He did not get accepted at Bowdoin but did at Wheaton, WPI, Clark. Waitlisted at Trinity College and Skidmore. waiting to hear on Colgate (today) and others.

ACT 32. SAT 1410. GPA 104. Just two AP classes but rest are Honors.
Eagle Scout. Model UN, NHS, gaming club. Started computer tutor program and chess club and game design club. No sports. live in New England. Visited the school and had a call with a current student (but that we are told was not considered).

@OverseasFather, my son did receive an email. I’m not sure why you did not. congratulations.

DiggityF, was the email concerning financial aid? Maybe only those who received aid got an email? Again, I was accepted but only knew about the decision from keeping in touch here - no email.

Ok. But my son did not receive any email informing him of the portal being updated with the results. Were it not for this forum, we would probably still be waiting on the results.

PS: My son did not get in. He’s been wait-listed.

accepted, surprisingly! i’m super grateful haha

stats:
4.5/5 W GPA, not sure about UW but around a 3.55 ? my grades were declining over the years, but picked back up a little bit first semester of senior year. and i go to a kinda crappy public high school.
5 APs, majority honors for the rest. also doing an honors-level independent study on mindfulness.
15/300 class rank
1530 SAT, no subject tests

ECs are good, nothing extraordinary… I put 6 on my commonapp. i’m copresident of one club and an officer of another, and no sports. i did participate in one citizen science study abroad program, but it had little to do with my intended major.

my essay was good, but a little unfocused… i had a lot of people edit it though. it was about transience and appreciation for the present.

1st choice major: sociology, and my classes + ECs show i’m genuinely interested in it.
didn’t formally visit nor do an interview, despite living only a few hours away.
half-asian female (maybe that helped lol)

Anyone has a problem submitting payment for the deposit to Colby? I’m an international student accepted to Colby, struggling to complete the process now…
After I clicked “submit payment” the page leads to a blank page called “Secure Information”, and nothing…
Anyone can help me out? Thank you a lot!

No problem, I did it. Perhaps I was just a bit too excited XD

has anyone got into the fb group? I requested like a week ago and still haven’t gotten in

My daughter is still waiting, too.

Congrats on those who got in too!!!

My student just received the notification via email that they were awarded the presidential scholars program from Colby…

the funny thing is… this is the same kid that was waitlisted at UMass Amherst for CS

My daughter just received the email notification about the Presidential Scholar selection as well!

waitlisted… anyone knows whats the rate of getting admitted from wl?

Has anyone gotten an admitted students packet in the mail?

My son received his packet on Friday, March 27, in the mail. We lived in Texas.
Has anyone heard if Colby will provide any online meetings with students, faculty or virtual tours?

My daughter received a packet in the mail on March 27 as well. We are in Pennsylvania. The admitted students webpage has a form for students to indicate their interest in being contacted by current students and faculty. Other on line signups for admitted students will be available in early April.

@discone22

My S talked with a Colby admissions officer yesterday for a half hour–so apparently they are reaching out. Double check your kiddo’s email/portal to see what might be there.

And just when I thought the mail/email inundation was over, a whole new wave is starting with catchy marketing to the admitted. The schools are definitely going all-out to get their yield.

So yes, there is definitely going to be plenty of online meetups.

@yeetmaster36 can u link the group?

Looks like my son will be choosing UVM over Colby. He’s studying computer science so it makes sense since UVM has a stronger CS program than a LAC (though we did tell him it really doesn’t matter where you go for computer science–we’re in the field–we know.) He did get the Presidential Scholar program at Colby, but that turned out not to be enough of a draw for him. He would have liked to know what research project he’d be working on, but there’s been no information & mixed feedback from current students. We’ve been a little underwhelmed with Colby’s outreach to admitted students at this unusual time where students are unable to visit & participate in admitted student events. I haven’t seen any planned online events & one can only learn so much from browsing the website. As of today, there hadn’t been any new videos showcasing the school like some of the other schools we’ve seen.

Academics aside, in the end a more diverse university setting felt more like him than a small exclusive school. I think if he were studying something unrelated to technology/engineering, Colby could have been more of a fit. He was really looking forward to attending the admitted student overnight event. That might have left him putting a deposit on Colby as he left! While unfortunate he didn’t get to go & possibly ‘fall in love’, the hope is he can free up a spot for another who is more passionate about Colby.

This whole college admission thing can be so weird & puzzling at times…DS got into Colby and Cornell RD, but waitlisted at his state school–which was actually his first choice until the waitlist! He never wanted the intensity of Cornell (applied because of siblings attending). And in the end is choosing a school in a city & state he loves, but was definitely not at the top of the list when he applied to all these schools last Sept/Oct. What a trip this has been! As a parent, I look forward to visiting Burlington (Ithaca’s great, but a major pain to get to and from.) I do hope to visit Waterville & check out the art museum regardless of any kid going there!

It’s interesting how the COVID-19 quarantine is affecting decisions for many folx.

Good luck to all & Be well and healthy!!

@just4this

I too am underwhelmed by Colby’s plan B for reaching out to admitted students when compared to what I’m seeing from other schools. But, FWIW, Colby does have a dedicated landing page for precisely this purpose, which I’m sure you’ve already seen. But in case not, here’s the link: https://admittedstudents.colby.edu

My S is waitlisted to Cornell, which would probably be a game-changer if they were to make an offer. It would be hard for me to imagine a scenario in which he would opt for the state Flagship (in our case, UMass, Amherst) over an Ivy or Colby.

A small LAC vs a big flagship is truly going to be a qualitatively different experience–so it all depends upon the kind of experience he would like to have. Since you’re in the same field (CS), you know that it ultimately doesn’t matter much where he does his undergraduate studies. UVM, Cornell and Colby are all valid paths to grad school in that field.

I’d probably decide it on package and community. In our case, UMass ends up being far more expensive than Colby and Cornell.

Be well and best wishes on your discernment.
