I probably said this earlier - but if you want an LAC, then Boulder makes no sense nor does UW, UCSC, UCD, nor UCB.
Also, you have need I believe - so the UCs will be $80K. U Wash - whatever it is - $60K - can you afford those? There’s little to no aid.
More sense, more remote and smaller - would be Montana State - and you would have skiing that would blow your socks off. CU will be and has ehhhhh skiing 35 mins away. It’s $68K and you’ll likely get $6250 off.
U Wash is $67,300 - and maybe a small scholarship. It’s also quite urban which you don’t seem to like.
Montana State - You’d be about $34.3K.
Wyoming, Idaho State and more would be much lower in cost. Nevada Reno too.
Well, the point here is - I hope you picked schools within your budget.
This seems like an inverted perspective. Further, I’m concerned that you have been writing a script for this student that is in conflict with their best interests.
Funny, my kid - knowing she’d be at 21 or 22, did the Indiana app and Arizona app directly - to free up spaces. I think she ended at 19 on the Common and 21 overall.
St. Lawrence Bound is St. Lawrence’s own app - so you don’t need Common. There is no app fee.
For Wesleyan, I guess you’d have to use Coalition
Bing and New Paltz are great. New Paltz sounds more your speed - smaller area, closer to Hunter Mountain. Bard too, if affordable (they meet need).
I guess I go back to ED2 - and you make it sound like a UVM or UW are your back ups - so that makes me wonder - do you really want that small school to the point you want to bind yourself.
It’s all up to you, of course - so do what you think is best. It sounds like you’ve already applied to these places so there’s that too.
I just don’t know your budget - so I’m guessing some aren’t going to work out from that POV.
My dad is a Middlebury reject and a Pomona alum, so I thought it would just be fun to apply to Pomona because why not, but I’m of course not expecting much.
Yeah I’m honestly not really sure why I applied to the UCs, and I would not be able to afford them. I think Boulder and Washington are a little past the upper limit of my budget, but I think it would be possible. While I’m pretty sure LACs are what I prefer, I still wanted to apply to some larger research universities just in case I have a sudden April switch of mind.
Thanks for the St Lawrence advice, I might try that. My HS really discourages students from using Coalition and I’m not sure how to get them to put my documents in Coalition. Is it possible to send them directly like you can do for school specific admission portals?
Right there is reason not to ED. ED and get in, there’s no sudden switch of mind.
If you do want the big research schools, you’ll have UVM - but I gave you some more. Montana State is up and coming - especially in STEM. There’s really no point in, if you decide to go big school, having to strain your folks beyond reason.
You’d have to reach out to Wesleyan and ask - but it doesn’t seem the right school for you. You already applied to a lot. If you want to ski, St. Lawrence seems the better choice.
But only one way to find out - call Wes and explain your school won’t let you use Coalition, that you have no common slots, and is there another way.
Or email them and ask. But would you choose it over some of the others - given your desire to ski? So if you have to let one pass….
For perspective on Hamilton’s skiing opportunities, the selection criteria of this former student, who attended a ski academy for high school, may be of interest to you:
“While applying to college, Edwards wanted to choose a school where she could ski, but it would not control her experience. Hamilton was the perfect location for her because the environment is much less competitive but allows her to continue racing most weekends. Everyone on Hamilton’s Alpine Ski team has a different level of ski experience, Edwards noted, which makes each practice and race even more exciting.”
