We’re not at the end of the NFL season yet though - always seems like there’s an NFL coordinator or two that take the step to College ball as HC’s.
“Moore, according to Wetzel, was then detained by police in Saline, Michigan — which sits just south of Ann Arbor — on Wednesday night. He was turned over to police in Pittsfield Township for an investigation into potential charges.
Moore was eventually taken into custody at the Washtenaw County Jail. Officials said that was done after an alleged assault investigation that took place earlier on Wednesday afternoon, and that the incident “does not appear to be random in nature.” Further specifics about the incident, or any charges that Moore may be facing, are not yet known.”
Lots of names floating out there:
Kalen DeBoer, Alabama HC
Jesse Minter, Chargers DC
Jedd Fisch, UDub HC
Clark Lea, Vandy HC
Kenny Dillingham, ASU HC
John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens HC
Tommy Rees, Cleveland Browns OC
Manny Diaz, Duke HC
Joe Brady, Buffalo Bills OC
Nick Saban
Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers HC
Jake Dickert, Wake Forest HC
And there’s a lot of “not serious/joke” candidates floating around like Lane Kiffin, Urban Meyer, Tom Brady, Jay Harbaugh and Brian Kelly.
Sherrone Moore was on the hot seat anyway. There were rumors he was going to get fired before this scandal.
It is stunning that Moore’s entire world collapsed the way it did. Sadly, much of his story is not uncommon among men who achieve powerful positions (and make no mistake, being the UM football coach puts you in a very powerful position) … but his actions when his world began to collapse are not necessarily common. I don’t know whether he was in a mentally fragile place beforehand or if he was mentally unable to deal with this particular situation, but it was obviously too much for him to deal with. He made terrible choices and will have to pay the consequences … but I feel sorry for all involved. (It does sound like there had been some concerns about his mental health expressed beforehand. )
Of that list I think Tommy Rees could make sense - he was the OC at Notre Dame not that long ago (if I remember correctly) and hasn’t been in the pro ranks all that long. The Cleveland coaching staff is likely to be disbanded in any case . . . I don’t see any of the NFL HC’s going to college and the better pro OCs probably want a chance at an NFL HC job. Coaching at the college level is a lot more uncertain these days with the amount of turnover due to the transfer portal and NIL. It’s hard to build a long-term winning program because kids don’t want to wait their turn - they just go elsewhere if they aren’t getting the playing time they want. It’s part of the reason that there looks like a lot more parity among the top 20 - it’s hard to see a team that you can’t imagine getting beaten by someone else on the list - not like the old days when Alabama was just rolling everyone. Saban got out at the right time.
While you never know who the next great one is, I wouldn’t hire anyone without college head coaching experience. It’s just too big a job to take that risk
Some, Iike Jake Dickert or Jason Eck, have too small a resume in my opinion. They could be great but do you want to take someone with a short track record?
maybe Lance Leipold Kansas….bit he’s not won at D1
I’m still liking B Kelly. How about Jeff Brohm?
His alma mater is Louisville, where he’s coaching. But that’s a name floating out there too.
I forgot to mention Marcus Freeman, the ND coach, but I cannot see an Ohio State alum now coaching at ND leaving for Michigan. That’s a pipe dream.
But the theory there goes that he wants coach in a conference and he’s not happy with the ND decision to not play a bowl, which may or may not be true.
Brian Kelly is toxic at this point. The Michigan fan base hates him.
You can love someone quickly with victories.
None of the names have been dominant except Kalen Deboer.
Does the school name overcome that ? Penn State will find out with the old Iowa State coach.
Kalen Deboer is a prominent name for sure, but not the only one.
Even John Gruden’s name has been floated.
No way they’re taking anyone with any stain.
Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, a Michigan alum and a huge contributor to Michigan Athletics, has his list:
Deion is a BIG no for me.
Interesting article if no one put up. It implies this was no surprise internally and that the AD likely had something done already. Well clearly they knew something since they were investigating.
I hope there’s nothing with knives and mental instability. He’s a young man.
And more potential Notre Dame trouble
I will be curious to see who takes the Michigan job. It’s a prestigious position – usually, this is a Top 10 position – but the program also is a Dumpster fire. You need someone of a quality caliber, but it feels doubtful that they could attract someone from the top tier this late in the game. I could see giving the acting HC a chance for one year so that they are on equal footing for big names in the next cycle.
Brian Kelly feels like a big no to me. Maybe Clark Lea? But he just signed a six-year extension with Vandy. ![]()
More ‘alleged’ info…
Same but maybe for different reasons…he has several serious health conditions.
Why is Brian Kelly a not serious/joke candidate? He’s got a great record, and maybe has the Michigan attitude?
Wouldn’t that be something of teams stopped putting ND on their schedules? Not sure how far out football schedules are, but I think non-conference games can be scheduled 5 years old. Maybe hard to reneg on those, maybe not. But playing ND does equal $$, so there’s that too.
I’ll be curious to see how this whole bowl situation shakes out. Frankly, there are too many now (41 at last count) compared to back in the 80s/90s (18-20). The payouts aren’t as much as you’d think relative to the hassle of playing what is essentially an exhibition game - maybe more teams will start bowing out. The product stinks most of the time and many of the stadiums are half filled (if that) so I don’t think it would be the worst thing in the world if some bowls went the way of the dodo.
There was the scissors lift accident in 2010 at ND, when “coaches” decided to hold an outdoor practice with a weather advisory/warning and a 20-year old student videographer died.
And Kelly, introduced at LSU, faked a Louisianan accent. Plus…
No thank you.
