Cokie’s parents were Hale and Lindy Boggs, Democratic congressfolk from Louisiana (Lindy took over from Hale after he disappeared in an airplane flight over Alaska in 1972).
And I also don’t think that the Bill Belichick experiment will end well.

I wonder which will last longer, Belichick’s tenure in Chapel Hill or his relationship with the gold-digger.
I suspect that there is a close correlation there.
I don’t think there is any correlation there actually.
I give Belichick 5 years to make UNC football on par with the SEC teams. If he can’t do it in 5 years then I think he will get the boot or really retire. That’s what the money folks at UNC want -– to be able to an attractive pick up for the SEC if the ACC dissolves. The ESPN/ACC contract is through 2036, so I guess that would give another coach 5ish years to get it done if Belichick can’t.
I’m not really sure. I’m not following the money in college sports too much. I hate it all. I want the athletes to be fairly compensated, but sure wish we could take the money out of the colleges. It should be more like baseball with fun minor league teams to follow. You can still have a good college team, but UNC’s baseball team (while really really good) is not a money-maker like basketball or football. The Durham Bulls minor league team next door are super fun to watch.
Of course, there’s too much money in college football now for a football minor league to take the development of players away from the college teams. Just not gonna happen, but I can wish it would. I loved the heyday of ACC basketball. It was a truly amazing time, but like the 3 networks on TV and everyone watching Mary Tyler Moore or Walter Cronkite those days are gone. There’s still good TV and there are still good teams in the ACC but it’s never going back to the way it was with that real shared experience. Hard to explain to someone who wasn’t in NC in the 60s/70s/80s/90s.
I was a student in Chapel Hill in the late 70s/early 80s; it was a magical place, no question.
My comment was really an oblique suggestion that the gold-digger will have a relationship with Bill Belichick only for as long as he is the head coach at UNC.
I agree that there is way too much money in college sports; but that genie is out of the bottle, and it isn’t going back in.
I don’t know. I figure she’s angling to marry him and inherit a good chunk of his $$ when he kicks the bucket. I don’t think she (or he) give a hoot about UNC.
I thought minor league players made less money than full time waiters (who now get tax free tips). Many had to have 2nd jobs, or is that no longer the case.
I have no idea how much minor league players make actually, but it’s not like there’s much money in college baseball either.
Looked it up. This article says $1,225 a week for a AAA player. Less for lower levels.
Sports Illustrated has a good overview of money paid to college athletes (surprise – 75% goes to football): College Athletes Are Getting Paid. Here’s What to Know.
Schools are permitted to share up to $20.5 million with athletes each year. How that money is divided up lies with the schools, but most are expected to follow a similar formula as the back-damages payout with 75% directed toward football, 15% to men’s basketball players, 5% going to women’s basketball players and 5% to the remaining players.
Well, my team won. I love the sarcastic comment I saw: “Arch Manning threw for four TDs and rushed for one. He sucks.” Poor guy can’t win, except he did today.
In other news, this seems to be the week that many strong FBS teams run up the score against FCS teams.
Oregon and OSU
For the second week in a row, South Florida defeats a ranked team.
That was exciting!
Wish Michigan had won.
The fact that UNC fans emptied the stadium during the 3rd quarter of the TCU game is one of the reasons it will never be a football school. Having fans that support no matter what is a key component. Also hilarious were the TikToks making fun of UNC basically having a regular day on their biggest game day of the year with a prime time TV spot - hardly any tailgating until right before the game. If they want to be like an SEC school, learn how to tailgate. My oldest is a UNC alum and I didn’t know what real tailgating was until my youngest went to VT. There’s a reason they call UNC fans the “wine and cheese” crowd.
We’re no longer donors to UNC since my D graduated but if I were, I’d be side-eyeing how much has been spent on Belichick, his sons, and trying to make UNC a football school.
Sure, they beat Charlotte yesterday (should have been a true beat down if you buy into the Belichick effect). Charlotte is not good, so I don’t think a 20-3 win with Belichick at the helm is something to be hype about.
Honestly, with the exception of Clemson and U Miami (and possibly, this season, Florida State), there are no SEC-worthy teams in the ACC.
ETA- Just looked up their schedule. The real test will be week 6 against Clemson. No other opponent that they have is SEC caliber. They should be able to get some more wins under their belt by then.
I don’t know any UNC fan that wants to be in the SEC. I certainly don’t. I low key hate the SEC. I was just saying that’s what the administration was angling for with the Belichick hire. To me it would just be a complete defection if UNC joined the SEC. Not into the whole tailgating scene either.
I care less about UNC football with Belichick in the mix than I ever have but I know a lot of fans are excited by it. I don’t think they want UNC to leave the ACC and join the SEC though. I think they probably just hope Belichick will turn UNC and the ACC into a football powerhouse too.
The fans aren’t giving those extra millions then!! I don’t know one Syracuse fan that wanted to leave the beautiful Big East with Georgetown, Villanova, Seton Hall, Providence, St. Johns and more.
But we are not administrators who want money - and the SEC delivers in a way the ACC can’t.
So what the fans want, unfortunately, isn’t reality in these situations.
Being a doormat in the SEC (for football) will be better financially than being an occasional solid team in the ACC from a dollars and cents, POV. And that’s all that matters - rivalries and basketball history be damned.
Quite sad, honestly.
Agree with you on what the fans want not mattering and that it’s sad it’s all about the $$ now.
(I’m sure Syracuse fans did not want to join the ACC, but it makes more sense than having Stanford in the ACC!!)
It would be a disaster if UNC left for the SEC. That’s why I said “like” a SEC school. Clemson would be the only current ACC school that could possibly hang with SEC football.
@tsbna44 my husband is a HUGE Syracuse fan and rues the day that they left the Big East!
Stanford in the SEC, and the entire Pac10 dismantling makes zero sense for the health of the students.
But they are looking at the wealth, not the health.
Very sad but it’s business. Not college. It’s just using education as a vehicle to do so.
Will they fail the player making $300k a year ?? Hmmmm
Holy cow that Michigan game was disappointing.
While I understand a Brent Venables multi-dimensional defense on the road is difficult, the Michigan D was underwhelming. Mateer, the OU QB piled up a lot of rushing yardage.
And Michigan playing conservative on offense with a true freshman QB was boring TV. Hopefully, by the end of the season, the OU loss will be a “good loss.”
