College of Charleston Class of 2028 Official RD Thread

This is the official discussion thread for College of Charleston Class of 2028 RD applicants. Ask your questions and connect with fellow applicants.

Hello! I am an applicant interested in the Honors College program. I was wondering are there any specific questions they ask or topics they cover for the group interviews and individual interviews that they hold? I am doing the virtual ones on Thursday and Friday. Thank you for your help!

No idea about the HC interviews, but good luck.

Does anyone have any intel on when the RD decisions will come out? Thanks.

Thank you.

So any news or rumors about the release date of RD decisions?

On the admission website, it says March 1 RD admission release.

Yes, thanks. It has said that for months. They usually come out before the date stated on the admissions page. South Carolina’s website said RD would come out mid-March and it came out today.

EMAIL FROM CofC:

" We received your application for admission via Common App.

Pause for deep breaths. That has to feel good!

You should’ve received access to your [CofC Admissions Portal], where you can check the status of your application, view your application and more.

As a regular decision applicant, your application must be complete by January 15. If it is, we’ll begin the review process, and you’ll get your decision by March 1.

Sending positive vibes your way,

CofC Admissions"

Thanks.

Was that email received when you applied or recently?

Regular Decisions are out - my son just got his.

My daughter just got hers today and was quite disappointed to be rejected. We are in Maine, she has a 4.0 non-weighted GPA, 8 APs, 8 ECs. Her friend who had a 2.8GPA, no APs or honors classes was accepted. Confused, honestly

Maybe they think she won’t enroll? Worth reaching out to admissions if it’s her first choice.

I’ve seen a bunch of posts and reports of them making equally baffling and inexplicable decisions.

Do they practice yield protection where they don’t want to have too many admitted applicants not enrolling? Their decisions are very strange otherwise.

It’s not clear how many schools actually practice yield protection. All I know is if my kid gets rejected, I tell him they’re probably yield protecting. He didn’t apply to Harvard, but if he had and had been rejected, I would have said it again.

I agree with you & definitely my child’s reaches (that don’t have a snowball’s chance of acceptance) are practicing strong yield protection lol.
This particular school was a surprise denial though. Outright denial. What would have been the small envelope in years past.
His stats are above their usual acceptances from what I can tell but not so far above that it’s obviously unlikely be considered seriously as a choice.
Since they seem female majority, I thought being male might unofficially help.
We are out of state but it could have been a contender because our family value is since you’re going to college anyway, you might as well experience a different geographical region.

CofC engages in yield protection. We have heard from a lot of parents with similar stories. Our son is a 34 ACT, 3.8, tons of international service hours, etc. Denied but he is fine with that. It was a safe school for him and they were right to think he would not enroll. I will also add the applications process there was a mess. Our son submitted Nov 1 for the honors college. Receipt confirmed in common app. Emails continued to come saying be sure to apply. He emailed his admissions rep and was told they would investigate. He sent two more emails without getting a reply.

Our daughter was admitted to CofC as an ED applicant with Merit but was initially waitlisted at the Honors College. She sent a new report card and other updates and was accepted to the Honors College a few weeks later with additional Merit.

She just returned from the Honors College Experience Day (terrific event!) and learned that they had over 30,000 applicants to CofC this year which is a crazy increase in applicants. She also learned that they had over 5,000 applicants to the Honors College with 275 admits. Seems like CofC is getting noticed by prospective students/parents with a lot more applicants than in the past and they are focusing on who really wants to attend - and/or who is most likely to attend - like so many schools. The admit rate should drop fairly significantly this year…as the College is truly gaining in appeal and recognition!
Good luck to everyone in all their college pursuits!
Cheers
