Columbia SHP Official 2015 Thread

Hey guys,

I was just wondering what topics are on the Columbia Science Honors Program Examination? How would you recommend studying for this test? Thanks

Hey guys, what did you put for the x men x hours x days x articles question? I think I put y^3/x^2

I put y. What did you put for the probablity problem in the “challenge section”?

I also put y but I honestly didn’t get that problem.

I put 0.08 for the probability.

The answer was y^3/x^2… I think the last one was 2.5. The first one was -1. I think that the probability one was one of the 3 I skipped. I answered 12.

Why is it y^3/x^2? Just curious because that’s the one that really threw me off.

How many do you think you guys got on the science? Some of the bio and earth science messed me up but I wanted to get an idea of how everyone else did overall.

3 of the x (forgot which ones) are inversely proportional and 1 of the x(the articles) are directly proportional so you get x^3/x = x^2 which is also equal to y^3 over the y articles.
Solve and get articles = y^3/x^2

Ah I see. Thanks!

For the probabilities one I added the probabilities of all 100 numbers together taking into account that the probability of the second 50 is three times of that of the first 50. Then I listed out the perfect squares and added up all their probabilities depending on whether they were over or under 50. Then I divided this probability by the total sum I had initially done to get 0.08

How many do you think we have to get right on the challenge section to get in?

Sorry,but I still don’t really get it.Could you show your numbers please. @Potter16

And the minimum value one was zero because x=0… Right? I am nervous for any stupid mistakes.

what did you guys get for the law of sines question

Wait, was it asking for min or max??

it was asking for max. I think I got 16/3

Are you sure?? I read min.

The law of sines one is 4sqrt2

@IequalSmart you’re making me doubt myself now . . . lol

U too lol.

Does anyone else know???

I got -1 for the first. I remember getting 488 for the cube one, and y^3/x^2 for the workers one. I remember answers of 4sqrt2, 16/3 and 0.08 but can’t remember any of the other problems. (If you remember the questions, I can probably recall the answers.)

I am sophomore, and answered all of the math, 70 of science (never taken earth science) and all challenge.
