Cornell Class of 2020 Early Decision Discussion

Guess what admissions told me today guys : ))))))))))) If you took the ACT you can choose what scores you want them to see meaning they take score choice for the ACT: ) Would’ve been helpful to tell us this earlier before we sent all of our scores : )))))))))))))))))))))))))

@Gatortristan , that must be new this year. When I called last year they said either all ACT or all SAT.

@Renomamma That’s what I thought as well! I called right before they went home today and the woman told me i you submit SAT you need to submit all scores but for ACT you can just send in whatever score

This is straight from their website:
http://admissions.cornell.edu/apply/first-year-applicants/admission-requirements
“You must submit your scores for either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT. Some of our undergraduate colleges/schools also have specific requirements for the SAT Subject Tests. Review the Freshman Admission Requirements Chart to see what’s required. It’s your responsibility to make sure that you have taken the right Subject Tests and have the scores officially reported to Cornell from the testing agency by our application deadline. Note that Cornell requires students to submit all scores from SAT tests taken and does not participate in the College Board’s Score Choice.”

So they only mention this for SAT which is probably why the lady told me i can submit any ACT score. My day just got so much better

That’s not fair for SAT test takers…

well in comparison they superscore your SAT once you send them in. If you send in 10 ACT scores they just take the highest composite

Has anyone had their ED interview yet? If so, what is it like? What do they ask, ect…

WHat is the Cornell Portal so sh!t. I literally can’t see what I don’t have submitted.

How long after you apply do you get your portal info to check on what if anything is missing?

Don’t forget to fill outcha financial aid information! It’s also due!

@bklyngal I got my info one day after submitting my app…

So far my “Cornell Application Status” says they’ve received the Common App and nothing else…I have submitted everything…I know they’re not going to get my SAT scores soon but what about my Writing Supplement? Letters of Reference? Transcript? School Report? Counselor Evaluation? I sent the Writing Supplement in 2 minutes after submitting the Common App, and the other things mentioned were submitted with the Common App…are they just slow or should I be worried?

I submitted on Thursday, nothing yet. Hopefully they received it since Sunday is 11/1.

Hello guys, I am not even in the ED pool, I am gonna apply RD, is the chance of getting in much lower?

@Ryud16

It’s debatable. I think it is, it’s like 14% admissions vs almost 30%. But some people say that, because athletes are encouraged to apply ED and more committed students apply ED, the applicant pool is a lot stronger during early decision. This would inflate the statistics, because if the applicant pool is stronger during ED, it makes sense the admissions rate it higher. Lots of adcoms say getting in ED vs RD is equally as difficult, and that it’s just an illusion.

I don’t know if I agree with that. I think that people use their ED on reach schools. Someone who could reasonably get into Cornell RD would apply RD, and use their ED for Harvard or something.

@blerghnn Dude I’m intending to major in food science too at CALS. What did you write your essay about?

Should I submit a 3.88 unweighted or a 4.25 weighted GPA?

@Geocach

I wrote mine about a few different things I’ve done that explained why I’m interested in what i’m interested in, and how the major I’m choosing builds on that

@Geocach I would say submit weighted-- shows that you’ve taken honors and AP classes

@Geocach @arulster I’m fairly certain that you should submit unweighted. Colleges want unweighted because it is the same across all high schools all across the country, while weighted works differently for various high schools. There is a section where you can report your senior year classes, so that covers the whole “telling the school I’ve taken AP’s” issue. In short, I’ve heard time and time again, especially on this forum, that colleges want to know your unweighted gpa and don’t care about your weighted gpa because it is usually bloated/inflated. Unless you’re not taking AP classes your senior year and need to put your weighted gpa to indicate you’ve taken AP’s in previous years, I’d put the unweighted gpa if I were you.

@Ryud16 ED at Cornell is 25-30% in acceptance rate, while RD at Cornell is 12-15%. So yes, it’s a bit harder to get in via RD. However, to make you feel a bit less stressed, do note that ED applicants are “self-picked”, or, they’re kids who know for certain that if they get in (and get a good financial aid offer), they will go to Cornell, hands down. In other words, kids who apply ED are usually a bit more competitive, so you could argue that ED is just as hard as RD because ED kids are super competitive.
