Your definition of need may be different than Cornell’s definition. Speaking from experience, it always seems like what we think we can afford and what schools think we can afford are diametrically opposite!
@muffinseller To withdraw app from other schools, just write a nice email to the admissions office and let them know you are withdrawing your application because you were admitted ED to Cornell.
@tryharding, actually CSS profile is more detailed than FAFSA and most private schools use this institutional method of figuring out FA. They count home equity, businesses, other assets, along with the FAFSA to determine a complete aid package.
@CCSenioritis
Is there a reason that you want to go to Cornell aside from the prestige? If you have a 3.52 and a 28 ACT chances are you are not going to succeed at one of the world’s most rigorous universities. I understand that you believe that being a URM will significantly increase your chances of getting into the school but that is becoming less and less of the case ( I see you made this thread 8 months ago-and yes I am a URM, but I graduated HS with a 35 ACT and 3.97 UWGPA). I am not trying to be rude, just trying to be honest with you. With scores and GPAs like that there is almost a 0% chance that you will get into Cornell. Maybe test the waters at a local college first to see how you do and if you do well try to transfer. These scores (World History(2), U.S History(3), Psychology(4), Human Geography(4), Physics 1(1), Computer Science(1), Macroeconomics(1)) show Cornell that you would not succeed in a college environment ( especially because APs are much easier than actual college courses). It would almost be unfair if you were to attend considering all of the students with near perfect GPAs that truly worked hard that got deferred/rejected. Applying to HumEc is not the easy way into Cornell, in fact there is ** no ** easy way into Cornell.
P.S: Deference—> acceptance chances are very bleak for everyone. When I was in High School I believe only 1/50 students in the past 4 years had been accepted after being deferred. I know I sound mad, but it’s almost offensive that some people think it’s ** that ** easy to get into an Ivy, and no-being a male in HumEc is not a hook (if anything it hurts).
I’m a student advisor for the class of 2020 if anyone has questions
@okie97, you, the student, can only take out $5500 in student loans your first year. This is offered to everyone, and you just need to fill our a Master Promissory Note (MPN) to accept it. But some students will qualify for a subsidized loan (based on family income) and others will get a non-subsidized loan. This all has to do with how the interest is accrued and if the government subsidizes some of the loan. It should be stated in your FA package if you get sub/unsub.
Each year after (soph-senior year) the amount goes up a bit as to how much you can borrow. So total over 4 years, you will be able to borrow $27K in your name. You either accept the loan each year or not. The rest of the money for tuition/room board will have to come from your parents in the form of their college savings for you, home equity, stock sales, etc etc, or loans they personally take out to pay the tuition.
@marchmattness13 I think that kind of FB page is put together by the Cornell Ambassadors. My daughter is an ambassador and they have students who set these up and administer the account. Also, Cornell has a social media site called “CU on the Hill” where all accepted students are invited to join. You will get an email about this sometime in the winter I think.
Honestly this is like the 3rd time someone has commented attacking me for applying to Cornell and frankly it’s disrespectful and it ruins my mood. I understand my chances are bleak after a deferral how many times do people have to reiterate that. Also, I did not apply to human ecology because I thought it would be the easiest to get into. I applied because I was interested and it fit best with the major i wanted to pursue as well as my extracurriculars. I don’t feel the need to explain myself for my statistics when no one hear has a file link to my complete application. I was deferred and I’m working on improving my test scores and gpa for RD results. I am not applying to Cornell for prestige. I’m applying because I love the school and I want to go there for the next four years. And by the way since you feel the need to bring up my AP scores, I got three 1’s because I was forced to take the exam on a 4-week trials course from my school and I was not prepared at all. So before you attack me and question my intelligence and skills please understand that a post on a results thread is not my entire application. I also can’t believe you just suggested I go to a community college. How disrespectful can people on this website get. @PaCALS2020
So all of you haven’t gotten your fin aid results yet? Weird…I got them the day after decisions and the results are awful…I have heard that they will “indirectly deny” students by providing poor financial assistance…perhaps this is the case?
Also, I’m filling out the Financial Aid Appeal Form, and it asks for my “Cornell ID”. Do I have that yet? I know I have a “Applicant/Net ID”…are “Cornell IDs” for current students or something like that?
@PaCALS2020 I’m going to politely disagree with what you said. There are many Cornell students who don’t have perfect scores and GPAs and do just as well, if not, better than people who were valedictorians, salutatorians, or perfect test scorers. In fact, my roommate and best friend never broke 1900 on the SAT and neither of us ranked in the top 10 of our class. Both of us are off to incredibly good starts in our first semester and may both end up on Dean’s list in our respective colleges after the end of the semester. Success at a top university like Cornell is not dictated by past performance, but rather by the work ethic you put in to stay there. Sure the work we get is much tougher than AP classes, but anyone who puts in the time and likes the material will thrive. You’ll find that within any Ivy League or otherwise comparable school there are people who numerically shouldn’t be there, but subjectively belong. It’s these people that makes these universities more than hubs of top ranked kids because they bring with them experiences and perspectives to share with their peers. To go out of your way to make such a comment regarding a potential student is by no means tolerable and reflects a very bad image on the student body. If anything we, as Cornellians, should encourage people not to give up on their hopes, but to actively pursue them no matter the obstacles.

@PaCALS2020 also, if you look at the results page there is someone who got a 24 on their ACT and had ike a 3.5 GPA that got into Cornell. So, it’s not impossible.
I got accepted into ILR, but I’ve been doing a lot of research, and especially for ILR there’s a pretty good chance you’ll eventually get in if you were deferred. Everyone who gets waitlisted at ILR gets an automatic guaranteed transfer, and a lot of people do get accepted regular decision. Don’t give up hope!!!
Ok Guys Last question about my CSS
I made a huge mistake on the Assets question
80% are telling me to report it to Cornell
The other 20% are telling me to not report it cause Cornell might suspect that i am hiding assets so that i get more Aid …
Please Help me make a decision guys
PLEASE :((
Ok, so I just checked naviance and I requested 2 letters of recs from different teachers. But only one says “completed”. Does that mean my second teacher never turned it in?
Would that have ruined my chances? Or would Cornell have asked for it?
