Cornell Class of 2020 Early Decision Discussion

@dehca2016 Cornell sent emails in mid-November if you were missing anything

@315181451212

One teacher turned in his letter of rec, would that have been enough for them not to send the “you’re missing …” email?

I swear to god, if I didn’t get in because she never got her letter of rec in, i’m gonna be furious. There’s nothing I can do now, which would be infuriating, but I still want to make sure its all fine before applying to NYU

I agree completely with IndoorCloud. It’s all about digging in and giving your all. They are looking for those qualities in their applicants. My S graduated in May. He was high school salutatorian, but was really pushed to the limits in Cornell’s engineering school. It’s not for the faint of heart! What people post on this website doesn’t give anyone who reads their posts any real insight into any actual applications. I do believe Cornell looks at basic qualities and scores for each college, but then they look beyond those. they are definitely looking for fit.

michaelog: I would report it pronto. there are a lot of people out here who try to hide assets. Don’t let them think you’re one of those. Cornell does look for integrity in their applicants!

ezrealsux: No, they are not open on the weekends. They notified ED applicants at 5 on Thursday because the staff had left for the day and is taking F, Sa, and Su off after working hard to get your notifications to you on time. They know they’ll be hammered with questions on Monday and they’ll be rested for that.

@Swimmer726 how can i prove to them that i wasn’t hiding assets?

ArthurDent: We full-paid for our son to be there, so don’t complain. Most families save for college over a child’s lifetime and then make appropriate decisions for where their kids apply to school. Cornell works really well with families, but please remember that you are not the only person needing aid. Private college costs have increased by 50% over the last 10 year. when the government guarantees paying for kids with nothing and people with a lot of money pay whatever is required, the people in the middle are squeezed out of the process. time to rework the process. Unfortunately, you and I were looking at Cornell at the worst time.

I would just notify them of your correction to the form immediately. the people at Cornell are really, really nice. They are very understanding and would be fine with your coming to them now. I personally wouldn’t wait. There’s so much dishonesty out the world, they will find your “fix” refreshing. good luck!

@ArthurDent42 use your application ID for the appeal. You have not been issued an official NetID yet or student ID number.

@Swimmer726 In my case the correction will lead to a bit more financial aid for me. That’s why I’m worried but i should probably take your advice.
I’ll be an international student and my parent really knows nothing about this stuff so thank You

@northshoremass12 and @ArthurDent42 the only letter you will get in the mail is the same one that was on the portal. The hard copy will come before Christmas. It’s in a thin envelope. In April after RD decisions, you will receive the official welcome packet.

What’s in the packet??

@Swimmer726 My family has been saving cash for college, yes, but not $120,000! We’re not rich, we’re probably just barely middle class, and we can’t devote half of our total annual salary to this school every year and still get by. Unless they expect us to sell our house or one of our cars, which is absurd. Take away a car and you also take away the ability for one of my parents to even work, so in effect Cornell gets less cash from us. Loose the house and now 3 out of 4 of the members of my family don’t have a place to live. That’s stupid. 2 cars and a house shouldn’t even be considered assets unless we own two ferraris and live in a mansion, assuming that’s the reason they expect us to pay so much.

Again, I’m pretty sure they’ve over looked something or there’s been an error somewhere. Based on the Net Price Calculator, which I’ve been playing around with today, the numbers they’ve given us are completely wrong. I’m going to call them on Monday. I’m fairly certain they’ll understand.

However, if things don’t work out, and if this is common place for many families, then who lets them boast “100% need met” on their College Board page and have a flippin motto that states “any person, any study”? These implications, among others, led me (and my family) to believe that I could attend this school without becoming crippled financially.

@ArthurDent42 I know its alot but I also feel like you should have not expected alot since ivy leagues are known for being expensive and that 100% need met just means that they’ll pay the money left after the family contribution is taken out. Its not what you think you need, but its what they think you need.

@dehca2016 Hey, that happened to me with Naviance too. When I checked with my GC she said it was because there was an error - for some reason - uploading that teacher’s recommendation. Ultimately, the letter was sent by mail I believe. (Albeit, I did have 3 letters. . .) Nevertheless, I’m sure Cornell would have contacted you if the omission adversely affected your application.

Regardless of what happens, I’m sure you and everyone else in this thread will end up where we all need to be. I wish you the best of luck!

Did anybody here enroll to Cornell yet? I didn’t.

It’s not Cornell’s fault that the government has put so many families in this position. When so many can pay no matter what the cost is and so many are funded by the government, the colleges are flush with cash, as I’m sure you’ve noticed on college tours with all the spending. why would colleges not raise tuition when they have 2 sources of guaranteed income? They’re all doing it and taking advantage of this nightmarish system. It’s the middle class students like us who can’t afford full tuition AND don’t get aid. That’s a problem for sure.

@Tryharding @Swimmer726 We shall see.

@ArthurDent42 Hope it all works out for you :slight_smile:

Yeah, I’m venting but I’m not sure at whom or what…not you guys, you’ve been such a huge help, thank you…not really Cornell, because then I’d be a hypocrite…it’s frustrating…ah well thanks again!!
