Cornell Class of 2020 Early Decision Discussion

@NewBigRed Honestly, my theory with Cornell (hello future applicants reading, I hope you take heed!!!) is that your test scores/gpa can be shit (to a limit, of course), but that will be overlooked if you display EXTREME PASSION AND DEDICATION in your essays (especially in the supplement essay) and/or extracurriculars to a SPECIFIC SUBJECT OR THING. Cornell’s emphasis on the importance of the essays is no joke, it’s true!!! Although I am someone who likes to think scientifically and therefore doesn’t accept anecdotes for future, factual predictions, I can contend that my personal experience proves this!!!

@ArthurDent42 I second that…

Just got the email from Cornell to join their private social network :))

@ArthurDent42 I agree, I believe my essays and extracurriculars were the strongest part of my application.

Just uploaded my Fin aid Materials To Cornell

How long on average did ya’ll wait for a Response or a reaction or the Fin aid Notification??

@Tryharding I guess that will be the “accepted students forum” :stuck_out_tongue:

I opened my email literally 2 minutes after it came into my inbox and once I was approved there were already like 20 people who’d made accounts… I only saw the email because I happened to check it between classes!

@NewBigRed Do you have to enroll to be approved?

@Tryharding Not sure, but I already enrolled. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a list of enrolled students to approve, though (to keep track).

got the physical letter from cornell today :^) welcome to cornell!

yeah i havent been approved yet and I havent yet paid the initial deposit

@awakentrance congrats! just wondering, is it any different from the online acceptance page?

@metacuber me neither so I’m assuming you have to enroll

@NewBigRed it’s more detailed, explaining how to enroll and the stuff we’ll get later on in April

@Tryharding I didn’t enroll yet but I was approved LOL idk

@awakentrance haha I was just approved so I guess it just takes longer for some people

@Tryharding yeah i just got approved too

I was accepted into SHA and I am wondering if my dropping two classes of the second semester of my senior year would affect my admission.

I want to drop orchestra and AP Comparative government because respectively, I am not going on the Carnegie Hall trip (Which basically we are spending our whole time preparing for so it is pointless for me to be in the class because I wouldn’t be participating) and AP Comparative government because I already took the class once (At my school I take AP Comparative government as part of the MUN program and I can’t attend to the two conferences our MUN team is going to so basically being in the class would just be an hour of study hall for me everyday).

Will Cornell rescind my admission if I drop these two (NON ACADEMIC) classes?

I was just wondering…but what exactly causes colleges to rescind a student’s application? If for example, if all my scores during first quarter were 7/7’s and then I had two subjects that dropped to a 6/7 in second quarter, would it be risky?

You would need to notify Cornell or RD schools (for deferred students) if you should drop any courses. They want you to maintain academic rigor senior year.
Schools are not going to rescind your admission for single letter drop, but if you should get a lot of Cs or Ds then you maybe put on probation or even admission rescinded.

I am a parent of an accepted student and also a graduate of an IVY league school.I can only tell you from my experience and offer you this: Do whatever you have to do to attend Cornell. Take out loans, work all summer , eat lots of soup do whatever is legal to ensure you enroll and finish your 4 years. Seriously do your best on AP exams this year as they can allow you to graduate a semester early, saving you a huge amount of money. WHERE YOU GO TO SCHOOL IS EITHER THE FIRST OR SECOND MOST IMPORTANT DECISION YOU WILL MAKE IN YOUR LIFE (possibly second only to whom you marry/partner but even this is questionable) Divorces happen all the time but if you earn your degree you will always be an IVY LEAGUE grad. IT has tremendous implications for whatever field of endeavor you choose…If the total cost of an IVY league education is 250,000 over 4 years (220000 if you graduate a semester early) and they are paying half, that means the cost to your family will be 110-125 K. In some jobs you will make this up in a matter of 2 or 3 years. And of course there is always ROTC, which I did.

@oldfort if I am a generally A- student and I drop to 1-2 B+s and a B-/C+ would that get my acceptance rescinded? I’m really worried about this because that B-/C+ class is one of the hardest in my school even though I work hard…
