Cornell Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@Trojan4u1001 https://admissions.cornell.edu/apply/forms-materials

@Firstofmany Thank you so much!

@grundeis it’s Dyson not the IRL. Dyson’s acceptance rate is around 2.8%. I had everything else except midterm report by March 25th. I sent the midterm report 3 days before my acceptance but the midterm report is still not marked on my application checklist. This means that they didn’t care about my midterm report. However, if anyone indicated on their application that they are taking classes in spring 2019 then they should submit midterm reports. I was not taking any classes and that might be the reason they didn’t care about mine.

Did any of you get your financial aid package yet?

I took mine to each teacher and had them sign it.

We got an email from FA that they need 2 schedules from our tax return and also the amount we expect to pay for our other two in college (triplets). We went through the paperwork we submitted already and all that info was already included but I guess this is an administrative nightmare? Actually glad they came back with the question bc I think we understated the cost for the siblings’ COA. And in fact, probably need to revisit that for one of our daughter’s FA while we are at it. My son’s acceptance email did say he would be getting a package in the mail “very soon” with all the housing and financial aid stuff. Waiting to get a reply from FA person at Cornell, hopefully today.

anyone else receive codes on their finaid checklist?

@Trojan4u1001 All you have to do is download the pdf of the midterm report off of the common application website. Print it out and go to each of your professors and have them write what approximately your current grade is. Your professors should have an idea of where you are in their course. That’s it.

@Optimistic_22 - That’s interesting because don’t applications get ran through a filter for grades and stuff? Like if they don’t meet a certain standard they are automatically scrapped, and never reviewed?

That would contradict their statement because I’m pretty sure (if this was the case) they wouldn’t withhold those types of applications till a random date, and they would come out as soon as possible.

Btw, I am ABSOLUTELY NOT saying that a sizable portion (if any) of the rejections this Tuesday were due to this filter lol.

They don’t do that. A holistic review is looking at all parts of your application and giving each part a score (different schools use different scales I think cornell has a 1-10). After the first two rounds of review, each reviewer averages out the score of your application depending on what cornell would like to put emphasis on (from most to least). then the two scores between the reviewers are averaged out. (7 for grades 10 for extra curriculars and a 4 for essay/story could be a 7 overall). After the two scores are averaged out of it does not equal to or exceed the cornell threshold, it’ll be a rejection. If it has however, it’ll be sent to the board of admissions ppl of the school you applied to. Your admissions counselor/reviewer will make a case for your application, all members of the board vote. If you get a majority, you’re accepted, they can also decide if you were to get waitlisted. The dean, as head of the board, takes your app and marks you as accepted waitlisted or denied admission. That’s how it works.

There’s no computer filter that automatically rejects people. This meeting is typically held once max twice a week, which is why cornell doesn’t release decisions everyday.

So is it possible that non TOs who were not rejected this week have possibly passed through the first round of averaging? (Sorry if I offend anyone who got rejected, if it makes you feel better I got rejected from my dream schools for the second time in two years so this is kind of one of my last shots)

Also I guess I might as well out my stats here if any wants to be brutally honest

GPA: 3.68( Have gotten straight A’s since after my first quarter, got a C+ and a B in non major courses, but it was the first quarter of college and I was adjusting, would have a 3.97 without those)
Major: psych
Attending a top 40 private university (made deans list too)
ECs: not many, I work to pay my own bills so don’t have a ton, but did do independent research where I wrote a paper on the evolutionary origin of a mental disorder along with a potential treatment.
Letter of Rec: From a golden apple winner and LA famous chemist
Essays: Pretty decent I think. I’ve been following one of their psych professors work for years so wrote about that as well as my determination to become an OB.

Yes. If you have all application materials completed, and you submitted your application early on, even a week before the deadline. There’s is a great chance that you have passed the first round of review. If your app took a while longer to be completed, it’s likely that your app is under the first review.

this is often as to why some colleges can reject you within a week of completing your app. it won’t pass the first round and they’ll simply reject you.

@parkcentral do you know this from experience about the admission insight? But nonetheless, I agree with your process analysis

@parkcentral Wow that was helpful and useful information thank you! You seem like you have done this process before lol…

So do they not even review your application if you’re missing one requirement? Like I still haven’t turned in my registrar report because my school is being difficult and telling me I should go ask this department to fill it out instead because they dont have the information and etc

can someone give me the link to the pin trick website?

@parkcentral I sure hope so. I applied to 7 different schools (Ivy’s and close) and haven’t heard from any yet.

Yeah I’ve been through the process once (maybe twice we don’t talk about that though). It’s actually a big reason as to why these schools really want you to get your app materials in a timely manner.

Some schools like Vanderbilt won’t let a late document hinder the possibility of getting admitted, it really depends on the school though.

Best of luck to all, see you Tuesday!
