Cornell Spring 2020 Transfer Thread

@sa5126 probably not; I could log in too

@indyextramusic No, I never received that email and I submitted my Mid-Term Report this morning.

@Congrats It is actually not a deadline but it is listed as a recommendation in the application portal.

Thus, if anyone cannot submit any supplemental documents until after November 15th, don’t stress over that, just get it in as soon as possible.

@hilareolas You will not get an indication of when an admissions officer has reviewed your application, prior to the release of decisions. A lot of people in previous threads mentioned that once their application checklist was complete, the portal stated that the applicant’s application was forwarded to the admissions committee. However, I completed my checklist recently and do not see that message. Perhaps, it will appear later on.

I would take that response with a grain of salt. Seriously, this has almost never happened in past years and they are known to push back decision release dates, that is likely why they gave you a vague answer. It would take an extraordinary and unprecedented miracle for this to actually happen. I really hope this happens, I would just not make this an expectation.

@DrewGonz19 I am applying to ILR!

@sa5126 No, I agree with @hilareolas because I also have access to it. If you look on past threads, you will see that people were able to login to this website (or perhaps a similar website) way before decisions were released. Additionally, there was also little correlation between being able to login to this website and actually receiving an acceptance. I imagine they might give you access to this website to prepare applicants if they are accepted. Nevertheless, I truly do not know why they would give applicants access to this website.

@hilareolas I know that they have reviewed my application since they emailed me requestiong course syllabi for transfer credit evaluation. Yet on my status page it has not shown a “reviewed” messege.

If I had to guess, I’d say they already reviewed most of our applications but they wait as long as they can so they can be sure of space availibilty.

@sam577 Firstly, you will never receive a “reviewed” message as Cornell does not let applicants know when their application has been reviewed. The only time you will know for sure that your application has been reviewed is when you receive the actual decision or by doing the pin trick a day earlier (and various other methods like that)

Furthermore, they likely have not even started reviewing your application. They may request this information from some or all applicants prior to review. Even if they requested this information specifically from you, they likely pre-screened your application to see if everything was in order. They will usually do this prior to application review and will not forward your application to the admissions committee if there are transcripts, documents, syllabi, etc. that are missing.

@vexed2death well, who knows

@sam577 This is just how Cornell reviews applications. There are colleges that will review incomplete applications, however, Cornell views this as disadvantageous to its applicants. To learn more about this process, either research Cornell’s application review or contact your admissions officer. Hope this helps.

is the ordered and initiated theory true? ordered means accepted and initiated declined?

@drewgonz19 someone I know who got accepted last year didn’t receive the “ordered” notification from the checklist

@DrewGonz19 It is basically 90% indicative of an acceptance. I am sure it is not full proof as @hilareolas pointed out, however, if you look back on previous threads all the way back to 2015, there has never been a case when an “ordered” status was not indicative of an acceptance. Nevertheless, that is a very small sample size.

Furthermore, there are many cases of people getting acceptance letters with an “initiated” status, thus, if anyone’s status does not change to “ordered” that is certainly not indicative of a rejection. Best of luck!

Hi! Does being hispanic first gen help my chances? For transferring

I dont think so

It can if you tie it in your essay and explain why it’s significant; otherwise no

@DrewGonz19 Cornell does strive to increase diversity on campus, thus, being a first generation/minority applicant would certainly help you in some capacity. However, there are many other applicants that are also first generation/minority.

As @hilareolas mentioned, it would certainly help you a lot more if you discussed what being first generation/minority means to you in your essay and how it lead you to pursue ILR. That would certainly be a huge advantage as it would show that you understand what it means to be in this group. Lastly, it would show how deeply passionate you are about ILR since it is so connected with your identity.

Think about it this way, mentioning clubs, extracurriculars, and experiences you have been a part of helps your application at least a little bit. Nevertheless, mentioning the impact of these activities on you and how they played a role in your realization and pursuit of your passion would help you a lot more. This is because this would again show the connection between your passion and identity. Your passion must come from a deep place.

Some applicants join many extracurriculars and never make full use of them in their application (I was one of them). Albeit, you will gain more utilization out of these extracurriculars if you use them to tell a story and really show how dedicated you are in pursing your passion.

In short, mentioning that you are a first generation/minority applicant is helpful to your application to some degree. Nonetheless, analyzing the extent of this portion of your background in your essay would help you much more.

Just out of curiosity, where do I see the ‘initiated’ or ‘ordered’ notification on my portal? I didn’t see any of these two words on my portal currently lol.

It would be on your Financial Aid to do list not on the application portal.

Hello,

Did anyone see their applicant check list in the application status portal disappear? I am no longer seeing that list, that was available to me for quite some time. Let me know- thanks.

Yes this happened to me too!

Hey Sarah,

Very weird huh? If you are comfortable sharing, which school are you applying to?Thanks.

Yes, very strange. I applied to the College of Arts and Sciences for biology! What school did you apply to?

Hi again!

The same goes for me, but not for Biology… I am wishing you good luck, who knows what this means. Best.
