Coronavirus in the US

Death toll now at 80 in China. Virus has hit at least 2,454 in China and 2,504 globally official count.

Wildlife trade banned nationwide. Sounds like a temporary ban for now.

They can’t eat pork, swine virus and they can’t eat wildlife, coronavirus! Hopefully, their chickens are healthy.

Seeing news sources quote even higher tallies above 2,700 cases.

It is clear to me that the spread of the virus cannot be stopped/controlled. The important question now is the mortality rate. It’s not at all clear (at least to me) how bad it is. Although all the authorities are acting like it is pretty bad.

I believe the situation in China is very bad but not very bad outside of China. Not sure we will ever know true extent of infections and death from it.

Completely? No. But think how much worse it would be if the steps taken weren’t taken.

It’s too early to make predictions. There’re certainly a number of missteps or worse along the way, but if any entity that can control the spread of this virus, it’s probably the Chinese government. It’s the only entity with means to take draconian actions.

“Drastic travel restrictions have been imposed outside the epicentre, with Shandong province and four cities - Beijing, Shanghai, Xian and Tianjin - announcing bans on long-distance buses entering or leaving.”

“The densely-populated southern province of Guangdong, Jiangxi in central China, and three cities made it mandatory for residents to wear face masks in public”

I don’t think this can be stopped either.

However, we do have scientists around the world fully dedicated to understanding the virus, its genetic code, its means of spreading, and then starting to work on a vaccine. And information is being shared online in real-time through the medical version of arxiv.org

I have no way to tell if China is being as forthright as possible, but it’s clear they are being much more responsible and forthcoming this time than with SARS. They have a vested interest in this because as the disease center, it’s likely they will end up with more casualties than anyone else. The sooner the world collectively figures this out, the better off they will be.

“China’s National Health Commission said on Monday that in addition to 2,744 confirmed infections nationwide – an increase of 769 – there were nearly 6,000 suspected cases and more than 30,000 people under medical observation”

You’ll get zero disagreement from me. But I do trust the CDC (as of now) more than the Chinese gov (and our own).

"The severity of the emerging crisis is evident in the government’s response. The Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party – the country’s top political body, headed by President Xi Jinping – has taken direct control of operations. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang arrived in Wuhan Monday to tour local hospitals, according to state media.

More than 11 billion yuan ($1.58 billion) in government funds have been dedicated to the crisis." (CNN)

I would definitely trust the CDC over Winnie the Pooh aka Xi Jingping.

Supposedly the coronavirus was already spreading in Wuhan in late December but the Chinese government hid it until it was more or less too late.

And there is bird flu.

Given how modern transportation is now, this could be similar to 1918. But with worse consequences given China’s economic importance.

When a big pandemic hits, it’ll be worse than 1918 with jet travel and the fact that the population is about 4.5 times larger with greater population density and urbanization.

At least we have better medical knowledge now than in 1918. It’s not perfect, but I suspect it’s better to be sick now than then.

GENEVA (AFP): The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday (Jan 27) said the global risk from the deadly virus in China was “high”, admitting an error in its previous reports that said it was “moderate”.

The UN health body said in a situation report published late Sunday (Jan 26) that the risk was “very high in China, high at the regional level and high at the global level”.

In a footnote, the WHO said there had been an “error” in previous communications published on Thursday (Jan 23), Friday (Jan 24) and Saturday (Jan 25) which “incorrectly” said the global risk was “moderate”.

Asked for more details, WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib said only that it was “an error in the wording”.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who is visiting China this week to discuss further action to contain the virus, on Thursday said: “This is an emergency in China, but it has not yet become a global health emergency.”

I definitely trust those whose life passion fits in the realm like the CDC. I don’t trust those whose main interest is controlling the masses and/or winning an election (pending government style). Lies seem to be part of the plan for too many of those folks.

Than goodness the CDC and the NIH are fully funded. (sarcasm off).
