It is clear to me that the spread of the virus cannot be stopped/controlled. The important question now is the mortality rate. Itâs not at all clear (at least to me) how bad it is. Although all the authorities are acting like it is pretty bad.
I believe the situation in China is very bad but not very bad outside of China. Not sure we will ever know true extent of infections and death from it.
Itâs too early to make predictions. Thereâre certainly a number of missteps or worse along the way, but if any entity that can control the spread of this virus, itâs probably the Chinese government. Itâs the only entity with means to take draconian actions.
âDrastic travel restrictions have been imposed outside the epicentre, with Shandong province and four cities - Beijing, Shanghai, Xian and Tianjin - announcing bans on long-distance buses entering or leaving.â
âThe densely-populated southern province of Guangdong, Jiangxi in central China, and three cities made it mandatory for residents to wear face masks in publicâ
However, we do have scientists around the world fully dedicated to understanding the virus, its genetic code, its means of spreading, and then starting to work on a vaccine. And information is being shared online in real-time through the medical version of arxiv.org
I have no way to tell if China is being as forthright as possible, but itâs clear they are being much more responsible and forthcoming this time than with SARS. They have a vested interest in this because as the disease center, itâs likely they will end up with more casualties than anyone else. The sooner the world collectively figures this out, the better off they will be.
âChinaâs National Health Commission said on Monday that in addition to 2,744 confirmed infections nationwide â an increase of 769 â there were nearly 6,000 suspected cases and more than 30,000 people under medical observationâ
"The severity of the emerging crisis is evident in the governmentâs response. The Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party â the countryâs top political body, headed by President Xi Jinping â has taken direct control of operations. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang arrived in Wuhan Monday to tour local hospitals, according to state media.
More than 11 billion yuan ($1.58 billion) in government funds have been dedicated to the crisis." (CNN)
When a big pandemic hits, itâll be worse than 1918 with jet travel and the fact that the population is about 4.5 times larger with greater population density and urbanization.
GENEVA (AFP): The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday (Jan 27) said the global risk from the deadly virus in China was âhighâ, admitting an error in its previous reports that said it was âmoderateâ.
The UN health body said in a situation report published late Sunday (Jan 26) that the risk was âvery high in China, high at the regional level and high at the global levelâ.
In a footnote, the WHO said there had been an âerrorâ in previous communications published on Thursday (Jan 23), Friday (Jan 24) and Saturday (Jan 25) which âincorrectlyâ said the global risk was âmoderateâ.
Asked for more details, WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib said only that it was âan error in the wordingâ.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who is visiting China this week to discuss further action to contain the virus, on Thursday said: âThis is an emergency in China, but it has not yet become a global health emergency.â
I definitely trust those whose life passion fits in the realm like the CDC. I donât trust those whose main interest is controlling the masses and/or winning an election (pending government style). Lies seem to be part of the plan for too many of those folks.
