Coronavirus in the US

Well, CDC has been facing budget cuts under the current administration so…

If you are interested in flus, epidemiology, and pandemics, Netflix recently released a very interesting and informative docuseries, Pandemic. I haven’t finished it yet but it is worth watching, IMO. It approaches the issues from many different angles. Very complex to track all this stuff globally. Also might make one see how this could have been a very natural occurrence from wildlife (it is very similar in make up, supposedly, to another known coronavirus from bats) jumping to humans, per usual, rather than conspiracy theories. It also touches on the growth of anti-vaxxer community and consequences. Check it out.

4th US case confirmed according to the article, 2nd in CA, although link title states 3rd.

China has extended its official Chinese New Year holiday break through February 2nd. Many areas have extended school closures till February 17th.

The initial response from Wuhan does appear to have been an intentional downplaying and hiding of the news.

From CNN, my bolding added https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/23/asia/wuhan-china-coronavirus-sars-response-intl-hnk/index.html

“Though the first case was detected on December 8 – it was not until January 14 that officials in Wuhan introduced any screening measures. In the intervening period, a major meeting of the Hubei provincial party was held in the city, and more than 40,000 families were invited to attend a banquet in an attempt to set a world record."

MODERATOR’S NOTE: I deleted the rest of the quote since the Terms of Service prohibits more than a sentence or two.

The Chinese government is not to be trusted with anything, since it will lie whenever convenient. They are building a new 1000 bed hospital in Wuhan despite no new cases ? Do they think the world is made of idiots ? Think about : if a city like NY would have to build a hospital in one week, how bad the situation must be ? Or to have 4-5 million people leaving the place in a few weeks, you would imagine they are not all crazy or panicking for nothing, especially since traveling and finding shelter in another city is not cheap by Chinese standard or living.

They are actually building two 1,000 bed hospitals. Yes, hospitals are crowded and supplies in that area are short. That has been addressed by media extensively. And I don’t trust the Chinese government but I didn’t see anywhere where they said “no new cases”. In fact, the comments from the Chinese leader Xi, yesterday our time, was that the situation was a “grave situation” and that cases are “accelerating”. Multiple news stories state that.

**Now reports of a 5th US case in AZ.

The article I quoted said no new new cases were reported in Wuhan until inspectors were sent from Beijing.

It’s a retrospective article, not reporting on anything happening today, as in literally not happening right now this instant.

The Mandate of Heaven. For those who are familiar with Chinese history. And the last time that Wuhan played a part in in modern Chinese history was 1911 and led to the fall of the last Imperial Dynasty.

I wouldn’t not trust the current Chinese government and the present leader. If you think Mao was bad, then this guy is even worse.

I saw photos of the Wuhan market which may have been the place where the virus jumped to humans. It was disgustingly filthy. I don’t know if that had anything to do with harboring the virus or not.

There is a case now in LA County; another traveler from Wuhan. So far no cases in people who have not traveled to Wuhan.

A lot of these food markets are filthy. In the US, they will be closed within a few days.

So many people traveling from Wuhan. Is it a big city? I know it is a big city in numbers but is it like Beijing where a lot happens.

^It’s a 2nd-tier city in central China, not nearly as developed as some coastal cities. It’s a transportation hub for that part of the country, so it has direct links (air and rail) with many major cities in China.

It’s the major political, transportation, and economic hub of central China. Any city of 11 million people is going to have a lot happening.

I meant international connection. I was surprised to hear so many people traveling from Wuhan and yet I never heard of the city before the virus outbreak. I knew Beijing, Shanghai, Forbidden city, and maybe one or two more.

Wuhan, a city of 11 million people, is one of China’s largest industrial hubs and home to its steel industry. The $9.4 billion Chinese automotive company Dongfeng Motor Corp, which is joint venture partners with Nissan and Honda, resides in this city.

Several suppliers and international business operations are based in Wuhan. For example, massive car factories for General Motors, Nissan, Honda, and other corporations are there. Wuhan is home to the business operations for international corporations like Renault SA, PSA Group’s Peugeot, IBM, HSBC, Siemens, Walmart, Ericsson and more. The beverage company Anheuser-Busch InBev SA also brews beer in Wuhan.

So, direct flights to SFO and NYC.

The following US airports are doing screenings: San Francisco International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, New York’s JFK airport, Chicago O’Hare Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Atlanta.

So for geographic perspective, Wuhan is equivalent to St. Louis or Chicago as a transportation hub.
