Coronavirus in the US

RIP.

Quote: “A government official involved in work to look after isolated returnees from the coronavirus-hit Chinese city of Wuhan at a lodging facility near Tokyo was found dead Saturday in what police say is a possible suicide.”

@doschicos something about that statement sends chills down my spine.

The government doesn’t have a great track record of not conflating public health issues with xenophobia/racism.

I want this virus contained, of course, I’m just very, very wary of how our gov is going to go about it.

My BIL travels to and from Japan and China quite often for work. I’m curious as to what, if anything, they’re doing about his business travel. I’ll have to ask next time I see them.

He’ll probably stop traveling to China for now, I would assume. Many companies have stopped employee travel. Flights are getting more and more limited anyway.

Health authorities in mainland China announced more confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths attributable to the rapidly spreading illness, bringing the totals to 17,205 and 361, respectively, as of Sunday.

China’s National Health Commission reported 2,829 new cases and 57 deaths. That compares with 2,590 new cases and 45 deaths, nationwide, on Saturday.

Of the newly reported deaths, 56 were in Hubei province – the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak –and one in Chongqing.

In Hubei, the new numbers rose to 2,103 confirmed cases and 56 deaths, up from 1,921 and 45 on Sunday. (SCMP)

Worldwide:
Deaths 362
Confirmed Cases 17,387

“As the U.S. steps up its response to the coronavirus outbreak, the Department of Homeland Security is warning airline passengers that their flights may wind up rerouted if officials discover mid-flight that someone onboard has been in China in the last 14 days.”

Good thing we will be flying to one of these airports from another airport on the list.

Canadians who have requested evacuation from the region of China hardest hit by the new coronavirus will undergo a period of observation at Canadian Forces Base in Trenton, Ont., upon arrival - including flight crew and staff.

“Yes, coronviruses are/can be shed in feces. Does it mean that you can get infected if you house is on a sewer and someone on your street or in your condo building has the infection? RIDICULOUS.”

Didn’t say that either.

Could be you don’t understand the reason water traps are put in sewage systems. That they were dried out/not performing in the multi-story housing complex in Hong Kong was covered in the same piece you quoted from rules out being unaware of them.

Long past time to agree to disagree.

On the contrary, I happen to know quite a few things about plumbing despite being a female. Have even replaced toilets. I also happen to know a few things about biology and molecular diagnostics… let’s just say please cut the fear-mongering. Our top is already doing enough to freak a few folks out. The chances of virus coming into one’s house through a dried p-trap is nil - the chances of getting it from touching a dirty surface are quite greater. Hand washing and not touching one’s face will go a long way to prevent infections.

On another note, Hong Kong health care workers just voted to go on strike, calling for the border to be closed with China. Things are getting hot over there. A closed border could be a huge problem.

Don’t want to get involved in a sewer discussion between two of my favorite posters. I agree with both of you, and will wash my hands and stay far away from other peoples feces!?

Sigh. We just had our own little strike at Swedish. @busdriver11 - hope you are not going to fly international any time she oon. We are going on vacation soon. I am mad that I booked everything in advance. Would have been cheaper now.

Cases 10 and 11

"Two more cases of the new coronavirus that originated in central China were confirmed in California, the Centers for Disease Control reported Sunday.

The cases, confirmed in San Benito County, bring the U.S. total to 11. Those sickened are husband and wife, and both are 57 years of age.

The husband recently traveled from Wuhan, China – the epicenter of the outbreak that began in December – but the wife did not. This is also the second case of person-to-person transmission in the U.S. Neither patient was hospitalized and are being isolated in their homes" (ABC)

The following hospitals were added to the previous list of 7 that will receive flights from China, bringing the total to 11.

Washington-Dulles International Airport in Virginia, Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in Texas and Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Michigan

“Wuhan coronavirus looks increasingly like a pandemic, Experts warn”

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/02/health/coronavirus-pandemic-china.html

“It’s very, very transmissible, and it almost certainly is going to be a pandemic,” said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.

“But will it be catastrophic? I don’t know.”

In the last three weeks, the number of lab-confirmed cases has soared from about 50 in China to more than 17,000 in at least 23 countries; there have been more than 360 deaths.

But various epidemiological models estimate that the real number of cases is 100,000 or even more.

Honestly, I think I might get travel insurance, just in case everything cascades, Bunsen. Hope you’re going somewhere fun.

I’m not going international anywhere in my immediate future, but the main operations of where I work from is a petri dish of people operating into and out of the country in question, so there’s that.

It’s likely travel insurance wouldn’t help.

Thanks bus. I don’t mind being stuck in paradise. ? Kid though will be mad to be stuck in rainy town with the cats.

I think that travel insurance would probably cover cancellations and problems that were a result of the virus, @doschicos, but maybe not if you go to China. Assuming Bunsen is avoiding China, however, if there’s travel issues down line (for example if a flight diverts or cancels), travel insurance should cover that.

More people have died from this virus than from SARS in China despite the fact SARS had a much higher mortality rate.

What was the number for SARS? It will be 20,000 sick and 400 dead in a day or two.
