Here’s one reason why Michigan governor Whitmer and Detroit mayor Duggan have the support of many Michigan residents: look at the curve for Michigan coronavirus cases. The seven-day average is looking good; hospitalizations are down, testing numbers are up, and the percent positive rate is down around 4%. Hope I haven’t jinxed anything by posting this.
DH is a veteran and spent much of the past 2 days with a few other veterans giving out paper poppies and accepting donations outside a local supermarket. I know they had masks but have no idea if they kept them on all day (its hot out), how far apart they stood/sat, and I know they handled a lot of cash. I politely asked DH to take a shower when he got home. Better safe than sorry. He was around a lot of people.
One of the other volunteers and his wife are coming over to social distance sit on the deck and have dinner together tonight. They offered to pick up our meals if we wanted to order where they were ordering, but I politely declined. DH and I ordered our meals from a different restaurant nearby (I’d rather have sushi than BBQ anyway) and DH will pick it up. I don’t know if the other gentleman will have showered and how carefully he will have washed is hands after handling the cash. I would rather err on the safe side. And I make no apologies.
My state has declared itself a sanctuary state. For years and years my state has selectively not enforced laws. Certain cities - I’m looking at you SF - have gone further than the state’s version of a blind eye. They have allowed theft, burglary, living on the streets, peeing and pooing on the streets. They have intentionally and with the force of their own ‘law’ circumvented federal law. We, it’s citizens, are well trained in knowing which laws are laws and which laws are easily ignored.
Why anyone living in a coastal state is surprised at the refusal of another class of individuals to abide by a new law (or suggestion or regulation) is surprising. We’ve been selectively breaking laws and getting very good at it.
How safe is it getting sushi take out now? I would love to have some sushi, but I am wary of any cold food, and it includes salad. I may be overly cautious.
My guess is most businesses will do the best they can, and it’s not going to be smooth or perfect 100% of the time.
Perhaps big corporations will do a better job with compliance than single-store small businesses, but IDK.
Having spent the majority of my working life in the restaurant business – in one capacity or the other – I can tell you some highly entertaining (& sometimes scary) stories about customers losing it & the staff needing to scramble to de-escalate.
Some of the worst situations are when a volatile guest requests the staff “do something” about what another guest is doing. For example: Will you do something about that crying baby?!
Guest on guest confrontations are the worst.
Well, maybe it’s worse when a guest screams and swears at one of your 16 yo hostesses.
If a large number of someones are cheating on their taxes and they are subsequently rewarded, encouraged and supported by their state, then yes others are encouraged to follow that behavior.
If the tax cheats get the state to fight the IRS for their right to cheat and get their state to codify their right to cheat in their state law - then it’s a pattern of others to follow.
Certain municipalities and certain states have made an environment which allows folks to do as they wish. All of a sudden masks are the thing that should be enforced? Why…can the person who shoplifts below the $950 limit in SF not be able to do so without the encumbrance of a mask. The theft is simply never pursued…should the lack of a mask be pursued? The shopkeeper can’t keep out previous offenders - that would be profiling - but now their supposed to stop a maskless individual.
FWIW, I whole heartily support mask requirements. But I also have watched the unwillingness enforce to rules on the books. So frankly, I don’t see how this one is any different.
As it is a respiratory virus, I would think sushi would likely be safe from covid. If the restaurant isn’t reasonably busy (inventory turning over quickly), I’d be more concerned with foodborn pathogens. FWIW, I have been ordering side salads as take out for most of the pandemic and haven’t gotten sick.
Actually, both policies are good public health practice (for Kaiser enrollees).
As I have mentioned previously, you can self-refer to a Quest lab (if they are in your locale) and pay out of pocket for an antibody test. No doctor referral needed.
It is ironic that potentially spreading disease by pooping on the street is okay in SF and LA. No one is ticketed. Typhus spread in downtown from garbage and the resultant rats left by street people. Nothing was done.
Same here in South Central Ontario. We went from winter to summer in the span of a week. I actually caved and turned on the AC last night because it was so hot in our bedroom, even with a fan, that I couldn’t sleep.
