Maryland’s numbers for today. Positivity rate has ticked up by 0.11% as I thought it might. I think we’re at a plateau right now and I suspect it will oscillate some.
Hospitalizations are down another 17. I think we’re about day 28 of this number steadily heading downward. Good news indeed.
As for me I do not intend to wear a mask whenever I leave my.house. I will not stay home because of that either. In my area, as I have said before, people aren’t really wearing them where they are not required. People are for the majority wearing them where they are required. I have no problem wearing a mask where required but if they start imposing silly regulations just because then that’s going to probably be ignored by many. People are able to think for themselves.
Only if you are going to one of the states that fit the requirement. Of course, the state might be fine when you go, but not be when you plan on returning.
Stats mean nothing for an individuals chances of a bad outcome.

That’s just plain not true. Obviously, one never knows whether or not they will turn out to be the statistical anamoly, but there’s a reason people diagnosed with a serious illness are a lot happier to hear their disease has a 98 % survival rate than to hear their disease has a 2 % survival rate.
[/quote]
Do those 98% of people chose not to get treated because only 2% die? No, they do not.
Those 98% survive because they get the proper treatment.
For CV19 the “treatment” is wearing a mask and social distancing.
I have never heard him saying the virus was nothing to be concerned about.

Early on Dr. Fauci said that type of thing from what I remember–late Jan? Early Feb? I can’t remember when but there is video of him saying that, I believe.
If I was a betting person, I’d put money on it that in 2 weeks (give or take a week) restaurant and bars will be mandated to close down again.
“Emergency orders in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties prohibit bars from operating and limit the capacity of restaurants and most businesses to 50%. All three counties require mandatory face coverings for employees and customers.”
“In Fort Lauderdale, the city manager has told code compliance officers to get tough on enforcement of the county’s social distancing and mask requirements. Businesses that violate the rules will be ordered to close immediately until they pass an inspection the following day, according to Sarah Hannah-Spurlock, the city’s nighttime economy manager.”
“Businesses in Broward County could be shut down and forced to pay fines up to $15,000 for repeatedly violating social distancing guidelines as coronavirus cases rise.
Starting Friday, businesses that don’t conform will have 24 hours to be in compliance. Then they could face a $500 fine. Repeated violations will lead to higher fines.”
Nick Oxford for The New York Times
We know how to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
'there is still a great deal we don’t know about the virus. But there is also a consistent set of lessons, from around the world, about how to reduce the number of new cases sharply. You should wear a mask if you’re going to spend time near anybody who is not part of your household. You should minimize your time in indoor spaces with multiple people. You should move as many activities as possible outdoors. You should wash your hands frequently. And you should stay home, away from even your own family members, if you feel sick.
‘Government officials can slow the virus’s spread by encouraging all of these steps, as well as by organizing widespread testing and competent tracing of people who are likely to have the virus. Countries and regions that have taken them have either avoided outbreaks or beaten them back. Look at South Korea and Vietnam. Or many places that were hardest hit in the pandemic’s early waves: China, the New York metro area and much of Western Europe. Or New England and the upper Midwest.’
‘the virus has begun spreading across the southern and western U.S., as well as in some other countries. And there’s no real mystery about why. Many people have stopped following public-health guidance. They have gathered in restaurants, bars, churches, gyms and workplaces (sometimes because their employers pressured them to do so).’ “There are ways to be responsible and socialize, but people don’t seem to be able to draw the line between what’s OK and what is not. For too many people, it seems to be binary — they are either on lockdown or taking no precautions.’
Your personal beliefs are not direct quotes. So please look back at the quotes posted by someone earlier. A video? There are too many videos with snippets of speech that are taken out of context. Media knows how to manipulate this kind of stuff.
Early on Dr. Fauci said that type of thing from what I remember–late Jan? Early Feb? I can’t remember when but there is video of him saying that, I believe.

At the time Dr. Fauci said those statements that others posted as being in Jan and later Feb, the WHO was issuing daily warnings that countries needed to get testing and contact tracing up and running asap and that the window of opportunity was closing. We didn’t get testing up and running until the virus had already reached levels where we needed mitigation (shut down) and so never got to use those tools early on when they would have been effective. Deborah Messonier broke with others and issued a warning to the American people to prepare for serious impact from the virus at and the CDC issued a warning on Feb 25 that it wasn’t an issue of if but when.
‘“We expect we will see community spread in this country,” said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. “It’s not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness.”
The agency tweeted Tuesday evening that Americans should think about getting ready.
“Now is the time for US businesses, hospitals, and communities to begin preparing for the possible spread of #COVID19,” it wrote, referring to the name the World Health Organization has given the novel coronavirus. “CDC continues to work with business, education & healthcare sectors, encouraging employers to be prepared.”’
Dr. Fauici surely knew what the CDC knew on 2/25 and before (how much before, I don’t know). It may be he was not aware of the big holes the lack of testing created and so truly didn’t suspect the great amount of spread that was occurring at the time. I have the feeling that public officials were trying to prevent panic in Americans up until that 2/25 announcement from the CDC and Dr. Messionnier.
I do not think that this was a ‘no one knew’ issue. There were daily articles I was reading talking about the lack of testing and that the virus could be spreading and no one know it. And that was in fact the case. Had the tests not been faulty or had we used the German tests, had the Seattle Flu study been allowed to study Covid in early January as it asked to do but was refused by the FDA because it wasn’t a research center, had hospitals, states, etc been allowed to develop and use their own Covid tests or decide when to test, the virus spread would have been found in January and steps would have been taken sooner. We would likely have a fraction of the fatalities and cases. All of that is most unfortunate.
This isn’t a ‘nothing we can do about it’ virus. There are lots of things we can do. Looking back can help us figure out what to fix and do now. It should not be a reason to not do those things we know to be effective. The idea of doing nothing is a recipe for disaster.

That’s neat, Emily. I don’t think they are having that around here. I hope that means doctors and hospitals have enough. My friend who works in a hospital said they have been conserving PPE so they do have enough now (because they have been reusing PPE and also getting their usual supply shipments and saving them). Also, that particular hospital was hit very hard and now has ‘only’ 16 Covid patients, so doesn’t need as much PPE as it did.
No idea, except I know that as a requirement for regions to open in Phase 1, every hospital had to have a 90 supply of every kind of PPE on hand, or a region could not open.
Lots of diseases (or medical decisions) can have deadly or life altering consequences. However, mere existence of deadly or life altering consequences is not by itself sufficient to make informed decisions if you do not know how likely such consequences are, or what pre-existing risk factors increase or decrease the likelihood of such consequences.
You are way off the mark here, since I have been pointing out the unknown level risk of long term damage or disability in the COVID-19 threads for a while to point out that the death rates that everyone else seems to be focused on are not the only thing bad that can happen.
We aren’t talking about a treatment which can cause death or life altering consequences. We are talking about wearing a mask and social distancing to protect one from being infected by a virus which can cause death or life altering consequences - unlike something like drinking bleach to treat CV19 or the drug that was being touted as a game changer.
We know what this disease is capable of doing already.
If one waits for all the studies to determine what choices to make it will be too late for many people.
If stats mean nothing, then why do medical research papers (on various medical topics) refer to stats when discussing risk levels or effectiveness of specific medical decisions?
I took @MarylandJOE to mean that mask wearing is not necessary in every single situation and should the governor declare masks must be worn at all times no matter the circumstances every time one steps outside their home…that’s not gonna fly.
For example, I walked the dog today without even bringing a mask with because I know my neighborhood well and can easily avoid other people. I would be irritated (and non-compliant) if Illinois declared masks had to be worn at all times when you leave your home under any and all conditions.
Because in this case, the recommendations to prevent the virus isn’t harmful at all. It’s a lot different when one needs to know how safe a specific drug or treatment is.
Wearing a mask, social distancing and washing your hands isn’t deadly or life altering. Doing the exact opposite, OTOH, is.
Do you really need a study to know this before making a decision about doing these things?
So let me ask you this. If your state deems it necessary for all of its residents to take the necessary safety precautions to protect its community, you, and you alone, will not follow these requirements because you know better than they do?
