Coronavirus thread for June

Workers removed thousands of social distancing stickers before Trump’s Tulsa rally, according to video and a person familiar with the set-up

In the hours before President Trump’s rally in Tulsa, his campaign directed the removal of thousands of “Do Not Sit Here, Please!” stickers from seats in the arena that were intended to establish social distance between rallygoers, according to video and photos obtained by The Washington Post and a person familiar with the event.

The removal contradicted instructions from the management of the BOK Center, the 19,000-seat arena in downtown Tulsa where Trump held his rally on June 20. At the time, coronavirus cases were rising sharply in Tulsa County, and Trump faced intense criticism for convening a large crowd for an indoor political rally, his first such event since the start of the pandemic.

As part of its safety plan, arena management had purchased 12,000 do-not-sit stickers for Trump’s rally, intended to keep people apart by leaving open seats between attendees. On the day of the rally, event staff had already affixed them on nearly every other seat in the arena when Trump’s campaign told event management to stop and then began removing the stickers, hours before the president’s arrival, according to a person familiar with the event who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters.

In a video clip obtained by The Washington Post, two men — one in a suit and one wearing a badge and a face mask — can be seen pulling stickers off seats in a section of the arena. It is unclear who those two men are. When Trump took the stage on Saturday evening, the crowd was clustered together and attendees were not leaving empty seats between themselves.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: We are getting SO many reports on this thread. From a wide range of users, not just one or two disgruntled people. I’ve flagged the administrators and will let them decide what, if any, action should be taken. I would suggest reining it in. We are not moderating much because we said we wouldn’t.

India reports biggest single-day jump with over 19,000 new Covid-19 cases
From CNN’s Rishabh Pratap

India reported 19,906 new coronavirus cases on Sunday – the country’s biggest one-day jump.

Another 410 deaths due to the pandemic were recorded, according to India’s Health Ministry.

That brings India’s total reported coronavirus cases to 528,859, including 16,095 deaths and 309,712 recovered cases.

The west Indian state of Maharashtra has the highest number of coronavirus cases in the country, with 159,133 reported cases.

That’s followed by national capital Delhi, which has reported 80,188 cases.

A 10,000-bed Covid-19 facility is set to open in India
From CNN’s Rishabh Pratap

A new 10,000-bed Covid-19 treatment facility is set to open in south Delhi this week.

It will be India’s largest Covid-19 facility.

Starting Sunday, 2,000 beds will be operational, while the remaining 8,000 beds will come into use from Wednesday, according to the Delhi government.

India’s Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited the facility Saturday.

“This 10,000-bed center would provide huge relief to the people of Delhi,” tweeted Shah on Saturday.
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police have taken over the facility and will oversee its administration and operations, confirmed the home minister.

“I applaud our courageous ITBP personnel, who would be operating this Covid care facility during these trying times. Their commitment to serve the nation and people of Delhi is unparalleled,” Shah tweeted.

As of Sunday, Delhi has reported 80,188 coronavirus cases, including 2,558 deaths, according to India’s Health Ministry.

When the southern states started re-opening in early May (weeks before Maryland) numbers in the Northeast, were coming down, but extremely and painfully slowly. And, we were all still closed up. No one was going anywhere, but the grocery store. The numbers in the southern states, while never as bad, were not coming down at all. They were flat, or increasing slowly, but still at too high a rate of infection.

Maryland was still closed when the southern states reopened all sorts of silly things, and when Maryland opened, it was a very slow reopening because they had a well thought out plan based on science and data.

But, Maryland, just like the other states with good numbers now, can go backward in a flash if people get complacent.

None of us are out of the woods - not by a long shot.

I only commented on the part that bothered me because I wasn’t sure you were aware of how much that one comment negated the rest of what you were trying to say. Impressions can do that. If you’re aware and ok with it, so be it. I don’t mind skimming or skipping posts where folks take that tactic.

And yes, there have been other comments from a few posters that have been similar, but that’s one I saw last night at the same time I had a, “oh heck, I’ll say something” moment - just in case it helps.

I think it’s more akin to what @deb922 said. In places that were hit hard far more people are careful. As per Worldometers at this typing, one out of 618 New York State residents has died from Covid. I’m sure it skews more to NYC. It’s to the realm where everyone I know in NY (not NYC) knows someone who has died from it, often more than one person. Whether they are red, blue, or purple (have some of each I know well), they are all being cautious even if they are choosing to go out. They are appalled that folks argue against masks.

Around me in PA plenty of people don’t know anyone who has died or even caught it. Many are heading back out and a few never stopped. Some of us are still being very cautious, but it’s not the majority anymore - so I’ve been holding my breath while watching numbers. Now that it’s been two weeks it’s starting to look ominous. At least some of the higher numbers now are in areas that weren’t as bad before like mine - which matches what I see IRL with more not caring and heading out.

For MD, many more live in the cities and some of the cities were hard hit. Folks going out in the rural areas might not have as much of an impact on the numbers if the folks in the cities are being cautious.

In much of the south there wasn’t much hit hard outside of areas of Louisiana. People, including the Powers That Be (they’re human too), thought they were relatively safe. As @emilybee tells us, yes, there were folks saying they were opening too soon, etc, but they’d been saying things since March/April and nothing bad happened to them post Spring Break, etc. It was elsewhere. It made it plausible for them to believe they would be fine. They ended up being wrong, but when predicting the future no one knows. You (general you, not personal) look at two paths, both advocated by some and dissed by others, and you have to choose one. You choose the one that makes the most sense to you, and that’s almost always based upon personal experience for humans.

You could have a factor that those who tend to be outgoing have already caught the virus. It undoubtedly helps, but I don’t think it has as much of an effect as the masses making personal choices for safety. Plus… that won’t help at all when immunity wanes as is expected from what I’ve read. I wish immunity would be lifelong, but it’s really looking doubtful that it will be for more than a few months. This could match a second wave that’s predicted.

We’ll see I suppose. It is interesting to look at, ponder, discuss, and try to figure out considering all aspects when brainstorming. What I really detest on this thread and elsewhere is when folks get so condescending. Once in a while kids would do that in my classroom and I’d always put a quick end to it. I wish I could do that here. Thus my attempt last night. At this point I’ll go back to just skipping what bugs me and noting the poster so I know who’s who personality-wise.

Such is life on an internet board.

Seems like people should stop flagging then as this thread was set up with reduced moderation.

^Yes, it’s the condescending remarks that are discouraging. There is no way the moderators can keep up with this thread to moderate it properly. So we’re seen as “inconsistent” or “heavy-handed.” CC was hoping that adults could act like grownups and have one thread that didn’t need babysitting. Huh.

I agree that I wish people would simply quit reading this thread or choose to ignore certain posters if it bothers them to the flagging point.

MODERATOR NOTE:
I just edited and deleted a LOT of posts, primarily in regards to users taking swipes at other users.

Please understand that we moderators can’t read every single post in a thread. We try our best to get context from flagged posts. We try our best to keep CC a welcoming place that abides by TOS. It’s very hard to not cross the line of over-moderation and allowing posts that might seem, to some users, rude or biased, to remain as they are.

I am not certain that a Covid thread is going to continue indefinitely. It’s certainly useful to be able to discuss this, but PLEASE try to refrain from taking personal swipes at other people and quoting the part you take issue with. This is the primary problem. Personally, I think users should be able to express an opinion. However, other users find that they must respond to that opinion, which is why it becomes hard to moderate the thread. And yes, there is no question that some posts are unacceptable.

Please know that we do read all flagged posts, but also understand we may not read an entire 180 page thread. If something gets flagged from page 3, a moderator may not be able to do anything about it without spending hours trying to then adjust the entire thread. We moderators volunteer our time.
We would like all users to make their best effort to be civil to one another and to avoid overtly political statements.

Thanks,
Lindagaf

ETA: Any posts that specifically call out another user will be deleted, unless the post is designed to add information or context.

Most of the posts that are reported are truly deserving of being reported. I am appalled. See @lindagaf’s post. “Reduced moderation” was an experiment to see if people could discuss issues civilly without insulting each other. It’s not working.

Perhaps flagging could be disabled on this thread. I do not know if that is possible, but if it is, it would both eliminate the apparent flood of flags and serve as notice to those participating.

I agree with Doschicos. I read some things here that sound like “huh??” but it doesn’t make me reach for the “report” button. There is a level of vitriol that would make me do so, but here it just seems like, at worse, a bit snarky and and best, reasoned argument. What is all this reporting about?

I would rather the snark remain than the argument disappear.

Though if there was a logical fallacy corrector button, I would be all over that!

@roycroftmom, see my post #3590.

I’m stepping out of looking at either of the COVID threads at this point. Good luck.

@roycroftmom , that would also give free reign for some probably very unpleasant posts.

So, with an attempt to again get back to topic and discuss/share information about COVID...

This is a fabulous article that summarizes the research done over the past 6 months:
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41591-020-00026-w

One of the most worrisome reports, IMO is that with respect to immunity,

The person who sent me the previous artice that this is referencing (I linked it several pages back) observed that the indications are that the IgG immunity is no longer significant for 30% of Symptomatic and 40% for Asymptomatic patients - after only 2 to 3 months post-infection.

So it seems that the less symptoms, the lower the antibody response and the greater the likelihood that those folks could get the virus a second time.

With respect to transmission, it notes

So please continue the current recommended social distancing guidelines and wear a mask.

I haven’t flagged or reported . I love to have differences of opinion and discussion, don’t get me wrong. But the tone of many posts is problematic. And things are apparently not going to change, since we have been trying to make this a cordial thread for some time.

I appreciate information. Good example on the last page. Thanks @vpa2019 for the article on kinase and research on manipulating human proteins, which are stable, rather than virus proteins, which mutate.

I do hope to continue to get info on research on treatments and vaccines, and any new info on mitigation of risk. I can’t read every news article. I most appreciate this aspect of the thread and hope it continues, maybe in a more limited form.

This info is (or should be) on the inside medicine covid thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/2181426-inside-medicine-what-are-you-seeing-p1.html

I worked a shift at the restaurant last night.

I’m increasingly uncomfortable being at the restaurant. Employees, by necessity, are often close to one another.

Chef & the BOH crew remain unmasked.
If we have a question about an order, and need to go to the line, Everyone has to raise their voice to be heard over the sound of the equipment and clanking of pots & pans.

In addition to helping with carry out & delivery orders, I was helping run food to tables and helping clear plates.

It’s…weird & unsettling to be right in there at a table with all the guests talking & yukking it up.

Later in the night, a couple, regulars, came in to sit at the bar & chat. I tried to stand far away and to the side. I don’t know if that helped or not. They had pictures on their phone they wanted to share, plus they really like to talk & talk.

If things were normal, I’d be mostly hidden away in my home office doing the bookkeeping & office manger duties, but that full time job is gone.

H, on the other hand, is mostly “whatever” about restaurant work. He’s all “Gotta pay the bills and keep that business going!”

I find I get confused. Like, is this virus really easy to catch (brief encounters) or not?

Why haven’t we had an outbreak where I work, when most of the BOH crew work more than one job & are not wearing masks?

Need more coffee…

Didn’t you have a group sick awhile back or was that the other restaurant?

I sorry your job is causing you to feel anxious. :frowning:

It’s descending into chaos.

‘Long lines and big crowds at U.S. testing sites amid a surge in the West and South.‘

“Coronavirus testing sites in Florida and Texas have become a source of tension and risk, with numerous residents waiting in long lines and others turned away as sites reached capacity, and crowding raising the risk of infection as people rushed to the front of the line at some centers.”

“Residents of these and other hard-hit U.S. states are turning out in droves to get tested as the coronavirus continues its surge across the South and West, threatening to overwhelm areas that until recently were spared the worst of the pandemic.”

“Pushing, yelling, ZERO social distancing enforced,” one Houston resident wrote on Twitter.“

“Nationwide, coronavirus cases have risen 65 percent over the past two weeks. By Saturday evening, more than 42,000 cases had been reported across the United States, including single-day records in Florida, Nevada and South Carolina. It was the third consecutive day with more than 40,000 new cases in the country.”
