How old is he GKUnion? And I assume the players wore no masks?
BTW, I peaked inside a gymnastics studio yesterday – they reopened last week. The doors and windows were wide open to let in as much air as possible. There were only three students (maybe 9-10 years old) who didn’t wear masks, but the adults did. They also told me they disinfect all the equipment between classes.
Myrtle Beach is seeing an upward trend in new Covid-19 cases
From CNN’s Natasha Chen
Myrtle Beach Director of Public Information Mark Kruea told CNN the Myrtle Beach area has seen an upward trend in new Covid-19 cases over the last few days, mirroring the increase seen across South Carolina.
“If you plan on vacationing in Myrtle Beach,” Kruea said, “bring your mask and your patience.”
Masks are not expected to be worn on beaches, Kruea said, since there is enough room on the beach to socially distance between parties. But, Kruea did encourage all residents and visitors to wear masks when walking around town.
Some background: Myrtle Beach saw an influx of visitors over Memorial Day weekend two weeks ago, when city code enforcement noted a couple of restaurants operating above the 50% capacity.
Kruea said there has not been proactive monitoring of that capacity limit since the holiday weekend, unless someone calls in a complaint.
He said that restaurants have adjusted well to the capacity limit with indoor dining, but that the problem is when guests are waiting to enter or gathering by the door, not social distancing.
Nashville delays phased reopening due to “slightly elevated” coronavirus cases
From CNN’s Tina Burnside
Nashville city officials announced today that they will be delaying the next phase of the city’s reopening plan following an increase in new virus cases, according to a news release from the health department.
“As of today, the majority of our public health metrics are satisfactory. But our 14-day new case average remains slightly elevated, prompting us to stay in phase two of our Roadmap for Reopening Nashville," Mayor John Cooper said in the statement.
"The level of cases in Southeast Nashville warrants further attention, and I have instructed the Metro Public Health Department to concentrate its efforts there. We will continue with Phase Two while carefully observing our public health data every day,” the mayor continued.
The latest numbers: Metro Public Health Department officials announced today a total number of 6,627 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Nashville/Davidson County, an increase of 56 in the past 24 hours. The confirmed cases range in age from 1 month to 100 years.
Phoenix mayor says city is not recovering from effects of Covid-19
From CNN’s Kay Jones
During a panel discussion with other mayors across the country hosted by the Center for American Progress, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said that the city and state of Arizona is not recovering from Covid-19.
“We have had so many of the records you don’t want to be hitting for Covid-19 from my perspective. We opened too much too early and so our hospitals are really struggling,” Gallego said.
She also said that the increase of positive cases is primarily due to the lifting of the stay-at-home order as well as challenges in long-term care facilities. Arizona lifted the stay-at-home order on May 15.
“I come to you as a mayor with a health care system that is stressed right now,” Gallego said. “I am very worried about the virus and its impact on our community.”
The world is indeed ending. I found a large refill bottle of Equate hand sanitizer in Walmart! That is the first hand sanitizer I’ve seen since this started. There was just one bottle and I took it. They had lots of 8 oz bottles of some odd brand in the aisles - limit 1 for $4. My large bottle was $3.97. As little as we’ve used thus far, this should last until next year. Older S has scrounged up half empty bottles from friends, so I can refill those and send both kids off as well. I feel better about that.
I don’t feel better that I have to go back to work tomorrow. We have a meeting at 10am, and I’m sure my boss will try to tell people to not congregate in front of my cubicle. I will appreciate the gesture, but I’m sure it will last all of 2 hours and then I’ll have to be the mean old police lady and listen to comments for the rest of my duration here. I’m also not looking forward to everyone heading to Myrtle Beach and coming back, as they were declared a hot spot. Our secretary - my main friend that I like to talk to - leaves this weekend. I doubt they will wear masks and be careful. But she’s hardly the only one going.
On the bright side, our case count only rose by 8 thus far for the city and county. That should include most (I hope) of the 1000 tests they did last Friday-Saturday. If that is the case, at least we might not be too bad for now.
I almost forgot. The group behind us in line… The lady was ranting about how this is all a political stunt. This isn’t any worse than any other virus. There’s only a 0.02% chance of anything happening (and she sounded like she wouldn’t know the different between 0.02% vs 20%, but that’s mean…). And, that everyone knows that masks don’t do anything but hurt you! Oh my… Even H (who isn’t near as paranoid as me) was just “GET ME AWAY FROM HER!”
My D had a dance audition last week. They limited their 40 person studio to 10 dancers, the dancers stayed 10 feet apart, and they danced in mask- studio owner wore a mask to teach too. No parents allowed in the building. Her regular studio is opening tomorrow. Limited to ten dancers as well, but masks are optional. We chose a summer intensive that is fully online so we don’t have to decide again until fall.
There is TP here, but the supply is spotty. For the last few weeks, I haven’t seen an empty TP aisle like we had for several months but sometimes it’s close. And you can’t rely on getting any one kind of TP. So if you just need a roll of TP, most stores have that. But it might be an off brand or there might only be a few on the shelves.
That portion of my post was essential to my contention that the benefit of the protests is much less than the potential costs in terms of COVID spread, which I maintain is emphatically on topic. The protests have been discussed extensively in this thread, and many posters have expressed the view that they are justified and based on legitimate concerns. Those posts have not been removed, nor criticized.
There is no reason for the post to cause any heated debate. I have no interest in providing the statistics that back up my argument here. They are readily available to anyone interested anyway.
It strikes me as intentionally diversionary for a poster to make this public assertion in a thread. As a result of this post, we spent quite a bit of time talking about whether or not this thread should be shut down instead of the topic at hand,. As a result, the thread became confusing and difficult to follow. Diversion successful!!!
In the future, if a poster thinks that a thread should be shut down, please just PM a moderator instead of diverting the thread. If the moderator wants to ask us what we think about shutting down a thread, he or she can do so.
MODERATOR’S NOTE: Yes, we have been lax about following the prohibition of discussing moderation on the public forums. We will go back to enforcing that now since it is obviously causing issues. Thank you.
I have a right to respond to posters who are on the attack just as much as anyone else does. This comment is attacking me and I was NOT being intentionally diversionary. These threads were an experiment per @CCadmin_Jon and I expressed my opinion. I will not do so again. I’m not the first person to mention the lack of obedience to the parameters which we were given. If someone wanted my post removed, they could have requested that. Perhaps it was helpful to have the discussion since it does appear that most posters want the thread to continue- especially if no one dares to say anything contrary to the clear “lean”.
@suteiki77 - I saw my dentist who had a pre-opening before her official reopening. Was the first person in for a cleaning. They gave me an option for having a crown done - but I choose to come back to be the first person in to get the tooth prepped and the crown made. I had the same dilemma about spending too much time in one place. Ultimately, I decided that two trips worked best for me. YMMV, but I hope your visit goes smoothly.
Does anyone have any recent polls about the country’s feelings overall? Last I knew it seemed this thread on cc matched what was in a poll for percentages wanting opening, etc. That poll was posted whatever number of pages ago.
Interestingly enough - I just got to participate in a poll asking all sorts of things about the country, including Covid reactions. It kinda felt good to be asked TBH. Now I’m wondering when that poll will post results to see if I’m “typical” or not. I won’t be changing my views regardless, but I am curious.
ETA: According to that site, I seem pretty typical. Others can see where they fit in. I still think this thread also matches the diversity of thought fairly closely to the percentages.
