Interviews of some people from Wuhan:

So weird the supply chain…there was a ton of olive oil here, and plenty of balsamic vinegar.

Honestly, I don’t give a hoot about the past other than I think states or areas currently having issues should learn from it to avoid going down the same path. For me, it’s the future that counts. It’s not a race nor a competition in my eyes. I can’t figure out why others are treating it that way.

It really does seem like the indoor/outdoor aspect could be a big one. In the winter the northern states were indoors and the virus spread starting with small numbers and exponentially increasing until brought somewhat under control. Time will tell if it lasts. In the summer the hot southern states are indoors and are currently starting with small numbers that appear to be rising (beyond just testing more)…

In both cases, it’s areas within the state even though people are generalizing about the whole state. I’ve learned to look at certain areas and appreciate sites that break it down into smaller sections. I detest that PA has discontinued their zip code info. I was using it to check within the two counties where I “live.” Some areas of those counties I frequent. Other areas I’m hardly ever in. I want to know what it’s like where my grocery store is.

My daughter lives in southern VA and people don’t wear them for the most part. It drives her crazy. A friend who lives in NoVA said none of the people she knows in the Virginia Beach area are bothering. Yet she hasn’t been anywhere up here where people aren’t wearing them. I’m in MD and people carry them walking and have them on in the garden centers and parking lots. It’s like two different worlds.

Who does this? What the heck has happened to common decency?

If someone intentionally coughed on me, there would be consequences!
Just disgusting.

Paper towels are slloowwwly coming back in stock. However, at my grocery, a two roll pack of Bounty was $6 - crazy!
I’m not one to shop around in person - I’ll do so online.
Napkin and cereal prices have also gone up here.

^^ Nova is a different world than Southern VA. In this case, the average person is more educated and wealthy. The general population views the Governor in a more favorable light and are more likely to follow his orders. And, our area is not hard hit like Northern VA, so it is easier to see wearing masks as a waste of time and unnecessary.

Note - I wear mine. These are my general observations having grown up in Nova and lived in southern VA for 25+ years.

I plan to use Amazon as much as I can going forward. It’s my understanding that there are exceptions to mask wearing, such as medical conditions. Previously there were people at doors checking for mask compliance and sanitizing carts. That seems to have gone by the wayside - businesses are trying to cut their costs to try and break even, I suspect. NoVA/DC is an entirely different world.

We are harder hit than a lot of areas in the western/southern part of the state. We have a large Hispanic population that works in poultry processing - and quite a few outbreaks there, although the VDH wouldn’t identify the locations.

In broward county florida every place i have been to has mandatory mask requirements and i have not seen complience issues. One of the stores even has N95 masks for sale. My moms building requires them as well (except at pool/beach). Im sure different parts of Fl are behaving differently.

Back at home in GA is a different story, but i do see many folks wearing them. My family does not go into any stores without them.

Btw i dont think spread is happening because restaurants, stores, nail salons , gyms are open. People are having parties. And i am sure some of the protests will show cases. The question is will hospitalization and deaths rise. Do the protesters that are maskless live with vulnerable people.

The rise in Oregon btw even if percentage high, is not as concerning as arizona

Why is it that most people don’t want to wear masks when it’s a minor annoyance and cost nothing if you make your own masks from free material around the house.

Is it because common understanding is that masks doesn’t protect wearer, it protects others? Does people not want to protect others? They don’t think by protecting others, protection level for everyone including themselves goes up?

If masks doesn’t protect wearer at all then why doctors and healthcare workers wear it and decline to work without proper masks and other protective gear?

Are masks really useless? Even when used with proper care, social distancing and hand washing?

It doesn’t matter if you have 20 people in a 1500 square feet space in a home or a grocery store if people are not SD and masking. We need to stop making excuses or placing blame in “situations” - the key is personal responsibility for self and others. Not SD or wearing masks is the hands on version of “hands off”.

For anyone interested:

The Oatmeal (cartoon) has a cartoon up about how our brains react to challenges to our belief systems.

Also, Rich Lowry has an article on National Review that details how the testing capacity in the US was ramped up. Details about swabs, # tests, solving supply chain hurdles, etc.

Tapping away on my phone, so a bit harder to post links.

In Holland people are not advised to wear masks. Even during the demonstrations most people did not have masks on. An example:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_pandemic_in_the_Netherlands#/media/File:Solidarity_Protest_Against_Anti-black_violence_in_the_US_and_EU_DSC02745.jpg

Common sense should tell that any mask should help to slow down the epidemic to some degree. Masks are annoying in a hot climate but in Holland?

I’m in southern Virginia and see plenty of people wearing masks. When I go grocery shopping once a week, everyone is wearing masks ( which I believe are still mandatory indoors) .

Enforcement is the issue - there’s no one to enforce mandatory mask wearing. If one can claim a medical condition and people are being taken at their word, they do not have to wear a mask. “I have asthma”. Okay, no mask. Yesterday was the first day I encountered so many individuals not wearing masks. I was in one aisle and a woman and her daughter (both maskless) came up the aisle showing no intention to social distance. I saw four young women, clearly together, maskless. Did they all have a medical condition that prevented mask wearing? A group of family members, all ages, maskless. I’m not interested in conflict with these folks. Mr. Sabaray can get the N95 masks - previously I felt they should be reserved for front line medical personnel. Now I’m inclined to ask him to get me one.

I had to get something for poison ivy. I went to Walgreens on the recommendation of my neighbor. There weren’t very many people there, but everyone was wearing masks…employees and customers. Actually, I think I was the only customer inside the store. Many were going to the drive thru.

What area/state are you in? Lots of mask wearing here in northern suburbs of Chicago.

With regard to not wearing masks due to a medical condition (or really any reason), HIPAA laws preclude businesses, or colleges, or workplaces from requiring the non-mask wearer to divulge their condition.

I don’t know whether N95 masks are back in good supply, but their advantage is that they also protect the wearer of the mask, unlike non-medical cloth masks which protect others, but are generally not believed to offer much protection to the wearer.

Exactly. Enforcement by state or even locality is all over the place.
https://www.cnet.com/health/where-are-face-masks-required/

Yes, I’m well aware of HIPAA. I’m in Virginia, western part of the state along the 81 corridor. Previously everyone seemed to be complying with mask wearing. I don’t know what has changed. I don’t think the burden of enforcement should lie with store employees. I think it you have a condition so significant you can’t wear a mask, you probably shouldn’t be out shopping in the first place. Perhaps instead of having senior shopping times, they should have an hour where everyone who thinks wearing a mask is stupid could shop.

Are we going to do a poll of state/city, masked/unmasked??? Someone want to keep a tally of who is reporting seeing how many people without masks? Do a study based on # trips outside the home, area of the country and % of those masked/unmasked???

If you are reading that a city/state/venue has non-compliance with masks - THAT is a problem - and you can and should assume that that same problem is likely replicated in many other city/state/venues in other parts of the country.

Be a model. Put your vanity aside. Ask your store to be more vigilant with customers. Only shop stores that are. Approach your workplace if there are issues. Take pics and don’t always pull your mask down. If you think it’s a problem, own it and be responsible for some action other than keeping a tally.

As my kids used to repeat in our home from the movie Madagascar …“Don’t give me excuses, give me results!”
