To me, NY-bashing is hashing out for the umpteenth time the mistakes they made three months ago. Not commenting on a current issue.
I think shutting outdoor parks is serious overkill. Not to mention silly, given the massive outdoor protests.
If outdoor religious services are still limited to 10, that strikes me as constitutionally very sketchy. Maybe the government can theoretically ban them, but I can’t imagine that would hold up in court under the circumstances.
Cuomo said today (and yesterday) in his presser that bars and restaurants not following the rules (masks and SD) will have their liquor licenses revoked. He has the liquor authority employees out in the field. In addition, he said it was up to the local authorities to enforce the law in this state which is masks are required as is SD. If he finds it’s not being done he will shut down the regions where these violations are taking place (mostly Manhattan and the Hamptons.)
He has received over 25,000 reports of violations most sending pictures and/or videos. He has even called a few establishments himself telling owners what he is seeing in these just a few minutes after receiving them.
He is not joking around. With freedom comes responsibility. And if one cannot handle that responsibility they will lose it. Plain and simple.
If we are going to put reporting of facts into the ‘bashing’ category then why continue with a ‘discussion’ at all?
As for freedom coming with responsibility - it would appear given what we are hearing about NYC - that the freedom is for some while the responsibility is for others. And consequences are clearly only for SOME and not OTHERS.
Cuomo has told the protesters exactly what he has told the restaurant owners and the patrons. Wear a mask and social distance. And get tested if you’ve been at a protest. He has been saying this since the protests started. He has told the police to wear masks, too. Just because they are police doesn’t mean they can break the law.
There has been no rhyme or reason to many of the decisions these governors have been imposing on us. How long are these executive orders going to be permitted to continue without input from the legislature?
I find this laughable after all the criticism from people on this board of Cuomo for not closing down schools fast enough or closing down the city fast enough in March.
He is not taking any chances New York will again be in the position we were in March and April and most of May.
And we are seeing what happened here being repeated all across large swaths of the country right now.
LOL, the legislature. In an election year? The legislature only legislates during the first year of the new session and when they have a gun to their head.
NYS legislature just passed a whole bunch of police reform bills last week. And it’s an election year.
They don’t need to pass any bills about this. The Governor has the authority that was granted to him, under the state of emergency, to issue Executive Orders pertaining to the CV-19 pandemic.
There wasn’t even any arm twisting needed to get the police reform through. And with both bodies in D control it’s probably the fastest legislation ever enacted in NYS.
I can agree with the “freedom has its responsibilities” path during this health crisis.
NY governor is ready to act against bars, restaurants and playgrounds. And he has an obligation and authority to act with the current health crisis.
I can support that.
However the same logic needs to be applied to the Chaz republic in Seattle. That is a nightmare from a health and covid standpoint. I haven’t seen anyone comment on that much at all.
Also if freedom assembly is respected here for peaceful protests.
As it should.
It should also be respected for political rallies. Even if I don’t want to attend in any way.
I don’t have to agree with the speakers or cause of either.
However, if done peacefully they are equally guilty of being health risks but legal.
To bash one as a health hazard and the other as not a problem.
It’s not principals we are projecting but political positions.
This “republic” is nothing but a big block party. Bored to the bones youth. It might have started as a protest, but it is no longer about BLM. The Black community leaders interviewed by one local news station were not happy about it grabbing attention away from the real issues.
I wish people would make an effort to understand how things actually work in our state before spreading inaccurate, inflammatory assumptions. Bill de Blasio doesn’t open or close businesses. The NYS Governor has the final say about what phase a region is allowed to be in. And closings aren’t haphazard. If the Hamptons and NYC keep screwing up the governor will roll them right back to phase 1. And whatever’s closed in phase 1 will be closed. So it won’t be gyms here and churches there on a whim. It’s ordered, detailed, and, if you care to read and get facts, a matter of public record.
I can think of a few reasons why people might want to refrain from saying they participated in a protest against police. Better to get people tested than put them in the position of choosing between testing and maintaining their privacy.
Oh come on. Youre more sophisticated than that cardinal fang.
This is a chat room with conversational ethos.
I mean the governor of Washington or the federal government.
And if they do get involved. I would assume support from those who think cuomo is acting appproately. And I personally do think he’s doing the right thing.
Also since the pnw barely escaped a huge health problem at the onset, one would have thought that a thousands of people living without showers and in tents without getting into the singing shared pipes and singing. Seems like a super speader event.
@BunsenBurner who mentioned BLM or why they are there.
I’m sure it’s fun. It’s just thousands of people acting in an inappropriate way relative to covid.
Just like that people in ny.
@privatebanker - of course you understand that if this “republic” is a legitimate protest, it comes with constitutional rights and thus is off limits, pandemic or not. It did start as a part of a protest in support of BLM and such, but now it appears to have evolved into a block party. I think the city leaders are taking a wait and see approach here… let the gathering evolve so the Black community would not want to have anything to do with it. But as of now, neither the Governor nor the city leader can’t do anything with that group.
Of course, constitutional freedoms and all but it seems the complainers here want to repeatedly harp on protesters. So, certainly they should be concerned about 20K rally attendees packed into an INDOOR arena, much higher risk than outdoor protests I would think. Let’s be consistent in the harping. I haven’t seen one mention concern about the Tulsa rally yet.
I think the legitimate protest stopped with the confiscation of public and private property.
They need to go home. Or March in the streets and be much more careful. It’s no longer about the underlying protests and now is anarchy movement.
Bottom line is one person’s street fair under the guise of a protest is another person’s lake of ozarks.
They do have guns and everything.
Didn’t we take the Michigan protestors to task in dozens of posts. Because of the health risks. They went for a few hours and didn’t hurt a flea. Even though the guns were menacing and I don’t stand with them at all.
Consistency is all. People should wearing masks and sd everywhere.
