Date Auction

As part of student council next year, we were thinking about doing a date auction. If unfamiliar, this is where you auction off “desirable” male and female students to the student body for charity. These students who are auctioned off go on a date with those who “bought” them.

Ideas? Pros vs cons? Anyone have experience? Insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

sounds fun but potentially very, very, creepy for the auctioned people

Prostitution is bad.

Of course the ones auctioned would have to be COMPLETELY comfortable with it. We won’t force anyone into doing this as it is understandable why it would be uncomfortable.

Lol, I was going to add in the first post that this was potentially border-line prostitution.

Wow, that sounds terrible.

I imagine people with money who could otherwise not get a date with the auctioned person(s) will purchase said date and then be crushed when the person does not enjoy the date and/or does not wish to go on a second date.

I concur.

But the large sums paid for said date would go to charity… People understand this is most likely a one-time date.

So negatives so far, any positives?

And, out of curiosity, how much do you actually expect to make for each date? Is the price all-inclusive, or are they expected to pay for the privilege of paying to take the person on a date?

We did something similar at my school. Instead of a date, we made them their slave for a day. They basically just dressed in some ridiculous outfit for a day and followed the person that bought them. Pretty fun.

I don’t see why people think this is such terrible idea. This type of thing is pretty common.

All inclusive. We are a public school in a well-off area, and some individual dates would be expected to go for $200, if not more.

Average date would probably be around $30-$50.

Common=Good. Woo!

Well then…

This sounds like borderline prostitution to me.

Common => people won’t be wierded out for the reasons mentioned above.

Its not prostitution. People need to relax.

My biggest concern would be that people won’t pay much for dates. But if that’s not an issue, I don’t see why there would be a problem. Just make strict guidelines for what is expected of a “date.”

@Twizzle how much of a success was your “a slave for a day” fundraiser?

YES strict restrictions for sure! Without them, this would turn to shambles. And deter the people being auctioned.

It was a can food drive. It was pretty successful, people just bought their friends and donated a ton.

We actually do have this at my school.

The dates are capped at $200, and if no one bids on any given person, then StuCo members in the audience MUST bid. The minimum bid is $20.

It usually turns out to be pretty successful, and a lot of people just end up bidding on their BFs/GFs.

@agnijay ahh thats some great insight! Thanks!

@Twizzle that sounds like a lot of fun :)

This is great guys! Thanks for all the input :)

Sex is all that is missing for this to be prostitution. Slavery is another word that comes to mind. Fun, reasonable, ideal…not so much.

Yes, volunteer slavery. Very close to real slavery
