Dear Pumpkin Spice whatever...back off till October!

@abasket The apple recipes look good. Does it matter what kind of apple you use.
I like Fuji but will admit I haven’t tried all the varieties.

OK. I seriously draw the line here!!!

Pumpkin Spice Latte PLAYDOUGH!!!

(found this on my Twitter - this is a good blog for parenting activities - but this is over the top!!!)

Here’s a brief list of some apple types and their best uses. They are pretty versatile, but I remember trying to make applesauce once with a variety that just didn’t liquefy properly. Of course, I can’t remember what variety that was.

Very helpful. Now I am in the mood for apple picking.

^^Thanks for the guide, greenwitch. But my H & I really like chunky applesauce and I make it every Fall by using two of each variety. So for us it’s okay if they don’t liquefy properly because it tastes better to us chunkier rather than smoother!

It seems as if any tv show cooking segment is all about the pumpkin too. Yikes. Apples need to push back and let themselves shine properly in Sept! There’s plenty of time in Oct. for pumpkin stuff. I agree wholeheartedly with you, abasket. Enough with the pumpkin spice already! :frowning:

I Have a recipe somewhere for an apple omelet that calls for golden delicious apples since they retain their firmness. I’m not crazy about that variety of apple, but the omelet is quite good!

Looking through the weekly grocery circular.
Pumpkin hummus, ravioli, alfredo sauce, bisque, truffles.
This is going overboard.

The only thing there ^^ I might be interested in is the bisque. No to pumpkin hummus!

In other sort of related news, Starbucks is coming out with Toasted Graham latte and new adorable cups!!

No to pumpkin ANYthing. Just yuck. The amount of crap that has to be added to pumpkin (or zucchini) to get it to taste like anything renders it useless and a waste of time IMO. Pumpkin and zucchini are the tofu of squashes. Come to think of it, I don’t like ANY squashes.

Apples are another story. Yum. Where I live, we won’t be seeing cool weather anytime soon, but making applesauce (in the A/C) at least makes me feel like it could be fall.

Real pumpkins are good for your brain and I like the taste. But I will wait for October for pumpkin spice latte.

I don’t understand the pumpkin spice hysteria. All the flavor comes from the spice, not the pumpkin. Can we blame this all on starbucks?

zucchinis can be converted into a very tasty dish a la ratatouille by stewing them with other veggies. Pumpkins - not so much.

There were joke images of pumpkin spice tampons and condoms floating around social media a week or so ago. I thought they were funny parodies but some people were furious… Not realizing they were jokes.

Just read through this thread. I am all in favor of pumpkins being banished until October at the earliest. I too am an apple lover. I pick apples, I can applesauce, apple butter and my apple pie jam is the bomb diggity. For my birthday, this week, I will make an applesauce walnut cake. I found the best pie recipe a few years ago and it really is amazing. I use Trader Joe’s pie dough - sadly better that what I can make and much better than Pillsbury. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/12377/grandma-oples-apple-pie/ The only changes is I add traditional apple pie spices (cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves) and I mix the apples with the sugar sauce and then dump it all in the pie shell. I use a mix of apples too. See the tips that other reviewers give. You are welcome.

Applesauce walnut cake sounds good.

Aw man I’m super craving some homemade, chunky applesauce :frowning:

I went to a pizza buffet for lunch today and there was a pumpkin pizza in the dessert section ( I went with cherry instead).

Applesauce walnut cake with cider glaze. I use golden raisins plumped in apple cider instead of Calvador or apple jack. I like to serve it with a puff of whipped cream. http://www.adventuresinthekitchen.com/2009/10/chunky-apple-walnut-cake/

Let me just say I have never dipped pumpkins in honey for Rosh Hashona.
