Are any other parents fans of the Showtime series Dexter?

I just watched the last episode of season four (the one with John Lithgow). I have been totally hooked since I streamed the first episode on Netflix a few months ago, and it’s no exaggeration to say that sometimes I plan my personal life around the arrival of the next DVD. (I wish Netflix streamed more than just the first two seasons.

In case this thread takes off, I’m going to say right now

I’ve watched it from the beginning and just yesterday finished rewatching Season 5 in preparation for the return on Oct. 2nd. Season 4 was excellent. I’m looking forward to seeing what Season 6 will bring. I think it’s a travesty that Jennifer Carpenter hasn’t received an Emmy for her performance on the show. She is an amazing actor with the range to easily handle the in-your-face personality of Deb, but truly excels in the subtle, more quiet moments of the character.

I agree with you about Jennifer Carpenter. Her character is not the kind that usually garners awards for an actor (“cop with chip on her shoulder, but with seldom-seen vulnerable side,” how original!), but she plays it very, very well.

Jimmy Smits was a revelation to me in season three. I never cared for him for some reason, but I thought he played a perfect balance of likable/sociopath in Dexter. He’s also much better, in my opinion, when playing Latino characters. I thought his role in the Star Wars prequels was an embarrassment, totally out of his realm. (Wikipedia says he’s Puerto Rican/Surinamese/Dutch.) (!)

I love the Puerto Rican actors in Dexter; they give the show a genuine Miami flavor.

Does anyone know who the celebrity psychopath will be this season?
I don’t think that John Lithgow could ever be topped. He was simply, horribly, amazing.

Lafalaum84 - We didn’t have it either, until D2 got me hooked. She got into it at school, then after I heard from some other people how good it was, I decided to give it a try and rented it on DVD. So last fall I subscribed to Showtime just for the season, then cancelled it. I also TiVo’d all of last season. Will renew my Showtime subscription sometime next month in preparation for the new season.

I think there are several celebrity guests this year (I ‘liked’ Dexter on Facebook, so I get updates), but the only one I can remember right now is Colin Hanks (Tom Hanks son).

Mos Def is another one… still searching for the other one I can’t remember.

Edward James Olmos I think is the last one.

I haven’t read the threads, because I don’t want to be spoiled, but we are very upset that the next Dexter DVD is coming out after our son heads to college. We can hardly wait until Fall Break when he comes home so we can watch it.

I had grown a bit tired of the series after a small character got too big in the series, so I stopped even watching it with the boys. I am anxiously awaiting the next season, though! Thank you to my favorite female character from the World According to Garp!

Totally agree that it’s a fabulous show. I watched all five seasons this summer! Two on Netflix, two on DVD from the video store, and one online which was a pain in the neck. Couldn’t get enough of it. We don’t get showtime, though, so I will have to figure out if I want it just for Dexter.

Edward James Olmos should make an excellent psycho. I know he’s been around a long time, but the only movie I actually remember him in is Blade Runner, and he was super-creepy even though he was a good guy.

Was anyone else shocked by the ending of season four? When John Lithgow’s character told his family that Dexter had taken something of his, and so he was going to take something of Dexter’s, the thing he was planning to take was the farthest thing from my mind. But it fit the Trinity Killer pattern!

mantori, I remember being shocked, and a little annoyed by how conveniently it worked out for Trinity to be able to pull it off. Overall, though I was sad for Dexter, I wasn’t sad that Rita was gone because I found her character to be very irritating. I think, too, that it was only a matter of time before something like that had to happen if the series, and Dexter, were going to continue in the same vein.

I’m looking forward to the introduction of the new villains in the coming season. Each year, they’ve been able to not only introduce a new character or two, but also to develop the ensemble characters as they interact with the new ones, and as the storyline progresses. For a show that employs several writers, they do a good job of maintaining continuity and forward movement of the plot. As great as the Trinity season was, I think the writing for Season 5 was even better.

Netflix tells me I won’t be able to watch season five until August 16th. Grrr.

I, too, thought Rita was kind of annoying. Also, I didn’t think the character of Christine Hill (Trinity’s reporter daughter) was very well thought-out. The idea of her being connected to Trinity was just too far-fetched for me. But I tolerated her because I think Courtney Ford is stunningly beautiful. :)

Quinn is my favorite of the non-original regulars. He’s completely believable as a cop, but there are hints of an underlying complexity that I find intriguing and hope will be further developed. (Is he actually a good cop with a few moral shortcomings, as he seems to be, or a bad cop who hides it well most of the time?)

Without giving too much away, can you tell me if that becomes any clearer in season five?

As for subscribing to Showtime, we just wait for the series to come out on DVD to watch Dexter. And we do a marathon, watching as many episodes back to back as possible.

My FIL wanted us to record Pillars of the Earth for him, as he was not willing to wait for the DVD to come out. My husband dutifully subscribed to Starz so he could tape it for him.

Without giving too much away, can you tell me if that becomes any clearer in season five?

Yes, then no.
No, then yes.

How’s that for vague?

One topic that hasn’t been talked about on this thread is the off-camera relationship between Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter. Last I heard in the spring, they were getting divorced. I can’t help but wonder how that might impact their ability to work together, unless it was a completely amicable decision to no longer be married (which is fairly rare!).

I will never be able to buy a Dodge. I hear Michael C Hall doing the voice-over and its just SO Dexter. Which makes everything he says about the car sound creepy.

Hall and Carpenter have been described in the press the last couple of years as “estranged,” but obviously they’ve been working together, so my guess is that they’ve been separated for some time and that the divorce itself is basically a formality now. Just a guess, though.

And as for Quinn…hmm! You’ve got my attention. Come on, Netflix! Gimme season five pronto!
