So, John McAfee (you know, the computer programmer guy who wrote the first anti-computer virus software) tweeted this today:
“The “Presidential alerts”: they are capable of accessing the E911 chip in your phones - giving them full access to your location, microphone, camera and every function of your phone. This not a rant, this is from me, still one of the leading cybersecurity experts. Wake up people!”
Ah, i read on a thread the solution is to buy and use a 2010 or older phone—if any network works with it and accepting that there are no security updates for years.
I guess it’s one more reason for keeping my landline. Those phones didn’t receive any alerts. Hopefully they aren’t recording and broadcasting anything in range.
Samsung S-7
Verizon is our carrier (whole family)
H has same phone, same carrier, different number, sitting right next to me in the passenger seat of the car we were in and he GOT the alert
My phone was being used to Blue Tooth music stored on it - his wasn’t
Mobile Data was on
Typical texts from my family/friends DO come through just fine with Blue Tooth and Mobile Data in use in our car… I received a fair number of friends/family texts during that time period, including while using Blue Tooth and Mobile Data today.
So… well… I always figured Canada was my second home (having grown up on the US side of the border). Should I assume I’m being deported there? We will be heading there in the next couple of days. Do y’all think my passport will still work to come back? Do I have time to check out more Caribbean Islands first - I mean - winter is coming really soon and I prefer warm to cold that time of year. I want to join the Canadians who spend the winter in the Caribbean…
We have AT&T. D has an iPhone 6s and got the alert at work. Flip phones for H and me. Mine was turned off; I had no message. H’s phone was turned on but he didn’t get an alert.
I got it even though my phone is not a smartphone. I received a text message with an atypical sound.
I thought it was kind of fun to hear all the different buzzes and bleeps happening at the same time in the cube farm where I work. But I was expecting it. A lot of my colleagues weren’t, and they were startled and annoyed.
It’s nice to see on this thread that I’m not the only person in the universe who doesn’t have a smartphone.
I saw the alart banner flash on my lock screen, but of course, as soon as I turned on the phone the banner disappeared. It did prompt me to finally figure out where all those banners dissappear to once the phone is opened. Who knew?
Didn’t get the Presidential alert. T-Mobile and a newer iPhone. Settings allow for emergency alerts. I do get public safety alerts from our local police department on both our home phone and our cell phones.
