Direct Entry Nursing for Fall 2024 Admittance

The cold weather is also our concern too. We are from the Bay Area and my daughter loves the sunny San Diego vibes; Unfortunately direct admit programs are just so impacted and competitive to get into. Looks like your daughter has a great chance to SDSU since her stats are high. We didn’t even apply nursing at UCI and UCLA because of their 1% acceptance.

Fingers crossed!!! we did not apply to UCLA nursing either, we applied for some bio something. Only UCI nursing - because they consider alternate major if you don’t get into nursing - and my daughter may reconsider doing a pre-med for her BS and do a ABSN later if not medical.

I had never heard of seasonal depression growing up in California but when I went to college in D.C. I sure got it!! I realized I was effected by weather and decided to move home after graduating. But at the time I saw it as learning “more about myself” along with everything else I learned about myself 18-22! lol I’m glad I didn’t leave or not go in the first place… living on the East Coast for 5 years was one of the best decisions of my life, Washington D.C. was a great place for college!

Gonna jump in here re: weather in the midwest – I live in Chicago, and it was sunny and 69 today. It is currently warmer in Chicago than in San Francisco (and we are 2 hours later at night). Admittedly, it was an unusually nice day today for February. But midwest winters are significantly less severe now than 10-20 years ago. I honestly can’t even remember the last time we had snow in Chicago that lasted more than a week before melting.

I did my graduate school in NYC and it was the best experience! Midwest winters are more depressing and grayer and longer than East Coast for sure. I spent one winter in Midwest in my late 30s and never again. The gray weather just drags on and on. San Diego is perfect

There have been some anomalies in the weather recently. I saw in Omaha 80 F today ??? In Cleveland the week before when we went was in mid to upper 50s - almost like in San Diego at the time. In Cleveland, it was not supposed to snow for our trip when we left and yet we got snow and wind half of our trip. Lake effect snow. But it was melting the next day, yet we got in a snowball fight , lol. Weather forecast was changing every few hours. My daughter got a good taste of Midwest winter. But on the day of the tour it was gorgeous blue sky and sun and no wind!

I lived in Omaha for awhile and know about wind chill. I used to say the only difference between -10 and -26 was how quickly your nose hairs froze when you breathed in. I also lived in Pittsburgh (which I loved despite the fact that it has more cloudy days than Seattle - a fact I didn’t know when took the job). But my youngest has only ever lived in North Carolina so she is really unsure how much to trust me when I told her you get used to the cold (the gray skies is another matter).
Marquette is flying her out to visit so she wants to at least see what it and Milwaukee have to offer. It has an excellent nursing program.

She fell in love with Duke when she visited her sister there. She would be getting a degree in neuroscience if she went there. She is very interested in focusing on mental health and the brain. I had a stroke 5 years ago after being hit by a car (as a pedestrian) and that started her interest in all things brain. There are other brain-related things that have happened to family members that have added to her intrigue. But if Duke says no - she’ll focus on nursing.

I just recently learned about ABSN and sounds like it’s a good option, but it also means extra time and money, and I don’t know how hard it would be to get into one later if she passes on the direct admit opportunities.

That it does! It is excellent program and it’s good to see another school just for comparison if nothing else. I hope you enjoy the visit ! It’s nice that they fly you in. Marquette offered that to us as well, but it was just too many days to take off and the hassle to travel…Wish it was easier to travel. but we had to pick…CWRU flew both of us in too.

I did not know that it gets that chilly with wind in Omaha! We are visiting Creighton in a few weeks!! !

That I don’t know either… only I heard that it’s easier than getting into the BSN. But not sure. However, you aren’t eligible for the federal loans, being a second BS degree I believe. Yes it is accelerated and takes 1-1.5 years and can cost up to 100k all in, but maybe one can find ABSN in their hometown and live at home. If you don’t go for a direct admit BSN then it is imperative to go for as cheap as possible for the first BS. I heard there are also BS to MSN programs that are a little longer/more expensive, but at least you get a master degree out of it.

Would love to know your/her thought on Marquette after your visit.

How did you get CWRU to fly you in? Is it something they offered or do you need to ask?

They offered. They paid for flights and 2 hotel nights at the Courtyard Marriott on campus.

Does anyone have any experience with Creighton? Visited, perhaps? They were very generous and heard only good things about the program, so we are definitely considering it - but it’s cold and windy  and no direct flights.

Oh dang that’s really impressive! Congrats!

Thank you so much! Not sure if she will go there, she would rather stay in California but we shall see!
