Best of luck to all of us

Anyone here know anything about UT Austin School of Nursing? Would love to chat!

University of Iowa decisons out for direct entry nursing - Rejected from OOS. DD had pretty great stats! looks like we just narrowed down our choices, so that makes it easier. Good luck all!

Mom of D22 with some thoughts to share for whatever they are worth. Many of you have children, like my daughter that have never seen a B on a report card ever, and I can all but assure you that is a strong likelihood Freshman year in a BSN program, or pre-nursing program. Take the sure thing with Direct Entry if that is an option! Most schools simply do not have the ability accommodate all worthy candidates from pre-nursing to Nursing.

Also as suggested, be sure to understand the required minimum GPA or score for passing a class. We found this varied greatly! I do know at Pitt the cumulative GPA requirement is a 2.0 and each class with a NUR prefix is a C. That is rather generous!

Tennessee direct entry has a 3.2 minimum GPA to advance to upper level. What ya’ll think?

Hi RinoMom.

Daughter received her denial letter from CSUF Nursing today. Waiting on SDSU, UCI, UCLA. Have acceptance from ASU, UNR (pre-nursing). :face_with_peeking_eye::crossed_fingers:t2: Glad and relieved to have one in the pocket. Buffers the denials.!!!

My daughter was accepted EA at Case Western for fall 2024 and we are also from Ca. Her stats are very similar to your daughter. Have you visited the school? My daughter also got accepted at USF and ASU direct admit nursing. She is undecided where to go. We like Case but Cleveland seems too far.

Exactly! D22 BSN Mom here as well

Do your HW. Read everything you can get your hands on – get a full and clear understanding of the requirements to successfully move through the programs of interest to you.

That’s not bad
I do recall UTK having a super duper load of chem + other serious heavy duty science classes in their BSN curriculum. Particularly freshman year-- more so than other comparable programs. That will play into the weed-outs. Just food for thought!

I am originally from Ohio, and because of trips to visit family in Ohio through the years, my daughter refused to apply to schools any where “wet & cold”. So, I guess ASU is looking better and better. Will wait and see if she gets into anything in CA.

Hi @OceanAir,
You have given some great advice on this thread and seem to know a lot about programs so thank you! This page has been such a big help! Do you know anything about the Ohio State University nursing program? I know its a highly ranked program but we were concerned with “pre-nursing”. My daughter was accepted to the University in December (pre-nursing), but we kind of steered clear of it since the “pre-nursing” was not direct and she didn’t want to risk not being accepted into the BSN Program. She recently was accepted into the EAP/Early Admission Pathway which now seems to make it a direct option. Do you know anything about this EAP program or any thoughts on this, especially now that she has EAP? Narrowing down choices at this point. We are visiting for Buckeye Bound and have the nursing session scheduled so we get more info there, but wanted to see if you or anyone else has any feedback on OSU Nursing. Thank you!!

Hi-- No- I don’t have any info on OHIO!

My daughter got her denial from CSUFullerton yesterday although she is being considered for her backup of Biological Sciences. She is accepted at Chico (pre-nursing), SFSU (pre-nursing), Sac State (pre-nursing), CSUEastBay (pre-nursing), Sonoma (underclared) and SJSU (undeclared). No direct admits and she really doesn’t want to leave CA. Only one left to hear from is SDSU which is unlikely.

So her choice will come down to whether she wants to start pre-nursing or undeclared and then apply to nursing programs after 2 years. This path is so competitive in CA, and so I started to wonder if it would make sense to consider just getting her BA/BS in Biology or Health Science or something similar and then apply to accelerated BSN programs after, or even an accelerated MSN that would have her come out able to be both an RN and a Nurse Practitioner.

Has anyone else considered this type of path? It seems it might be a little less competitive to get into an accelerated program after getting a BA. Of course, it makes the total time at school longer (plus more cost) but it would only be an additional 1.5-2 years after the BA.

Hi there,
My daughter did consider the alt pathways if she didn’t get into any direct admit nursing programs since it is so competitive. She applied to University of Maryland for Biological Sciences: General Biology. She didn’t want to go to Baltimore for junior and senior year for their nursing program. She applied for biology and/or biomedical science to a few colleges that didn’t have nursing majors. She would have had the choice to do accelerated BSN or PA School afterwards if she went that route. This was really more of a back up if she didn’t get into any direct admits. I think at this point she will choose a direct admit to ensure 4 years for completion and then she can decide what pathway for higher education if she wants. She can either stay with BSN or she has discussed NP or CRNA possibilities after BSN. I would rather her save the $$ for NP or CRNA school than the extra time to get BSN. But it’s all preference and I know the direct admits are competitive and they still want to go to a school they will enjoy. My daughter’s top choice was Penn State/UP but she got Altoona. That was a rough night, but she has moved on and has some great choices.
I think they will all have great careers no matter which path they choose:)

Why not take one of the pre-nursing offers, and then see how she does? If she can get into the nursing program, great. If not, then that will be the time to choose an alternate major and different path to nursing. I’m generally not a fan of ASBN programs because you really race through a difficult program and then jump right into a challenging career. And then of course, there’s the high cost.

I say this as someone who is a second career RN and got my BSN from one of the CSUs you mention in your post. Granted, I already had a BA from decades ago, so my path was a bit different. Before I was accepted into the CSU I had an acceptance into an ASBN program that was $$$. I’m so glad I took the much cheaper and longer path. I loved my three years of nursing school, and probably would have hated the 15 months of the ASBN program. And I’d still be paying down that loan!

Does anyone know much about UNF’s nursing degree? I was denied from the direct admit but I am still strongly considering going because I feel like it would be the least competitive program to get into in the state at a junior level (compared to other schools like UF or FSU). Since no other public unis in FL offer a direct admit I feel like it might be my best bet.
