Re: #25. We’ve just spent a week in London. The rule of the day is black, darkest grey and possibly a traditional denim wash. H, who never notices what people wear - pointed out that everyone was dressed in dark monochromatic colors. The splashiest colors to be found were on some of the scarves. So while the fashion mags might picture white jeans, rest assured, it’s not caught on among the ‘commoners’.
It has never once occurred to me in my entire life, when seeing a well-dressed person, to think “Wow she/he looks fabulous except OMG, really, white pants in winter! Who does that?”
Rock the skinny white jeans and you’ll be rocking the skinny white jeans.
Totally fine! With flip flops and a tank top, no. But with chunkier, wintery other items, go for it. I am regularly wowed by put together women wearing things that to me “break the rules”. And the white rule seems to be no longer in the fashion world.
I say go for it.
@Wellspring , I did ask for opinions from like minded folk as myself. Those who love fashion, probably follow bloggers, trends. Is this something they would wear?
Btw, @conmama , wearing “sheepskin” colored pants today…
I honestly had never heard of those types of pants before!
@Martha5 If it’s good enough for Ines, it’s good enough for me! I see lots of blogger/fashion photos with white jeans in fall, and personally like the look. By the end of winter, I can’t bear to see another somber black outfit so I find it refreshing.
Years ago (15+) I recall reading that Kate Spade recommends white 501s with a fisherman knit sweater … it’s a cool look.
Black or navy sweater with scarf, white (or off white jeans) and black/brown chelsea boots look great. And a little bleach takes care of whatever gets on those jeans - this I know from experience.
I recently heard a professional fashion stylist (yes, that is what she called herself) say that white pants (linen etc.) are a no-no in the winter but white jeans are acceptable all year long. This in an area of the country with 4 seasons.
I can’t imagine pulling it off. I am married to someone who is always hot and wears shorts in the winter. So I’m not glued to “rules”, but I do like to dress for the season and weather. White to me is spring and summer. But I have 4 seasons where I live. When I go to south Florida in the winter I see white in February.
I used to have a pair of winter white corduroy jeans that I loved. I wouldn’t wear them on the snowiest days but they really made me feel good in the dead of winter, with the right other pieces - boots and sweater on top. I’d buy them again in a heartbeat.
I personally retire my white denim jeans in mid-September - partially because they’re cropped, but will wear off-white/cream velvet jeans or cords in fall/winter. I also have a cream (I guess you could call it “natural”) cable knit fisherman’s sweater I practically live in all winter.
I agree that the type of fabric does make a big difference - a heavier weight denim seems totally acceptable to me for winter wear. I had a pair of white micro cords that I just loved and wore for a couple of years - I’m going to try to find a new pair. That said, I don’t think they’d look quite right in NYC in the winter. It’s just such a dark city and everyone is in black.
I’m surprised that so many people have a problem with white jeans - they go with literally everything and are probably the most versatile item in my closet. I have several pairs in various crops and lengths. I only wear mine once between washings - they need to be super fresh and clean for the right look. This summer I bought some wide legged crops with a frayed hem that I wore once a week at least.
I live in mine during the summer. They are skinny jeans and just look great with all sorts of tops!
Here in California it’s still Indian Summer-ish. I’m still wearing my white jeans, but often with dark sweaters rather than summer tops. I generally stop wearing them when the rainy season starts, but these days we have years with virtually no rainy seasons, so they may never be put away.
cold midwest here; i liked those pictures and the jeans looked great! but here, in the snow and ice, i rarely if ever have seen white jeans in the winter. Cream cords and very faded light denim, yes. But usually no white jeans.
Another shade of white! Cream, perhaps. So named for all of us who struggle with the white taboo!
My problem with white jeans is in general I don’t wear jeans at all in the warmer months, to me it’s too hot. So it’s a mix of the wrong fabric in the wrong color.
A reminder that the OP talked about wearing the white jeans in a couple weeks - so probably still fall and not snowy winter! (although I do understand some small sections of the country could have a little snow shortly).
I have a pair of velveteen-type white jeans that are definitely winter, not summer material. That said
I have just planned my outfit for tomorrow.
A trendy shop in a town near me (Maine) sells very fine-waled white cords that look a lot like jeans. I’d wear those!
