<p>We live in a very big country. When I read about a woman who beat her young child to death because she was afraid he would be homosexual, it isn’t that hard to believe that a father might believe that a woman’s role is to service men, and include his daughter in that group.
Fathers in other areas stone their daughters for having sex, even if it was

<p>Okay, she’s a freshman right? So, how did she get sent off to school with no plans for payment? The article I read indicated her parents were initially shocked but are now supportive. Supportive doesn’t mean they like it. And, how did they think the tuition was getting paid? We need more information. What happened?</p>
<p>Emaraldkity, I didn’t refer to her father being a doctor to comment on his code of ethics. I was thinking along the lines that for circumstances such as these involving his own daughter, funds might not be all that hard to find.</p>

I don’t think any profession can be assumed to earn a high salary these days.
And as we’ve seen on other threads, it’s not unusual for someone with $99,999 EFC to claim that they can’t afford to pay towards college ( but they don’t want their kid to have to take out loans)</p>
<p>But I agree that a common assumption would be that drs & lawyers have high disposable income.</p>
<p>It’s truly a sad story, not one on woman’s empowerment. What’s the over/under on how many semesters she will last at Duke? I’d bet 100:1 that she won’t graduate.</p>
<p>I hadn’t heard about this before, but reading this thread has depressed me. It’s an awful story. There is nothing good about what she is doing. If she had a full scholarship to Vanderbilt, I take it it was merit money? And merit scholarships are not available at Duke? What a choice: Go to Vanderbilt for free (or to any other college that is affordable), or go to Duke and pay for it by performing in porn movies. (And I agree with audiophile, I don’t think she will graduate.) This young woman needs help, and I hope she gets it.</p>
<p>I do not think she will continue on at Duke until graduation either. Especially now with the distraction of all these road trips for interviews and public appearances. It is a very sad direction that her life is taking………….</p>
<p>Duke does have merit scholarships. She got a full tuition merit scholarship at Vandy and 13k in financial aid at Duke. She could have gone to Vandy for just the cost of room and board which probably would not have been a financial burden on her parents- they had already paid for private high school. She should have taken the Vandy offer. If there are financial considerations, I don’t think the schools are different enough to justify significant debt for one ( or doing porn). </p>
<p>I won’t comment on my personal opinions on porn but I think what she did is foolish. She got a FULL scholarship to Vanderbilt University yet decided to go to Duke and make porn videos to pay for college. A more financially wise solution is to go to Vanderbilt on Full Scholarship AND make porn videos as extra income. After all, if she is indeed making enough money to cover $60,000 room and tuition, then imagine if she would practically go to Vanderbilt for free while making loads of extra money on the side!</p>

<p>Apparently her father is a doctor who works in a hospital that is dedicated to war veterans. He also just got back from some sort of medical duty in Afghanistan. Apparently he makes about $200,000 a year but has other children in college and just purchased a new home with high mortgage payments. The parents had a payment schedule with Duke where they were paying $5000 per month for her tuition, but found they could not afford it any longer. The last payment was made in December. She apparently came from a very religious background and attended a Jesuit high school.</p>
<p>Her “agent” gave an interview and blames the parents saying they “left her with no other choice”. Ridiculous statement. Even more ridiculous is that she makes only $1500 per shoot and gives the agent 20%. Not that any amount of money is worth a woman’s dignity, but $1500? This young girl is being used all the way around.</p>

<p>Frankly she should have gone to a much cheaper school to begin with.She even admits that. I understand that she could have gotten a full ride to Vanderbilt. For the life of me, I can’t fathem why she didn’t take that full ride or why her parents didn’t try to persuade her to go elsewhere.She should have taken that free ride! However, other than being ostracized at Duke, I don’t think she is a victim in any way. As someone noted, she even turned down roles that she didn’t like for one reason or another.Overall, she seems quite happy with her decision and has said so in a number of interviews I would even bet that she will continue this endeavor after school.</p>
<p>My main problem, which no one seems to be mentioning, is what is she doing to prevent AIDS? I really worry about that for her. Also, although I do agree that incurring a lot of undergrad debt is wrong regardless of the school attended, she is on the wrong path. Again, she should have gone to a cheaper school on a full ride and not have had to incur working in the sex industry to pay bills.</p>

<p>I agree…this isn’t likely to be a barrier for her. Law schools are highly numbers driven, more so than other kinds of graduate and professional school. As we agreed upthread, getting clients is another matter, but there are client populations that may not care. But she has to get through undergrad first. There aren’t many people who make it through college while being harassed by schoolmates. I hope she takes some time off and lets the furor on campus die down.</p>

That way she won’t have to worry about all those STDs that is easily spreaded in the porn industry.Plus old men is easy to sexually please. She wouldn’t have to do much for the money. <p>This is nonsense. There is a correlation between doing inappropriate activities and lack of intelligence. How she got into Duke is beyond me. </p>
<p>I don’t see the big deal in children watching porn or even “sexting.” There are loads of people who watch porn since like 10 and they turn out just fine. I think people criticize it a bit too much. It’s a fun outing for when I’m feeling “horny” instead of actually having it suppressed for getting it with a girl or guy. And if my parents or the school won’t tell me about sex, I’ll just have to figure some things out using the internet. (Yes, I’m saying I learn a little sex from watching porn).</p>
<p>But I don’t really think anyone should be doing porn just for money like this girl. It is my belief that if you want to perform porn you should do it willingly and not because you have to. </p>
<p>@wannabefeynman People can be smart and do inappropriate things. There is not a strong correlation there. Especially when sex is involve. Some people only see porn inappropriate to children and perfectly acceptable otherwise. </p>

Such inappropriate activities are often addictive, which leads to it becoming a long-term distraction, which evidently results in less studying. </p>
<p>@wannabefeynman That’s a possibility but how do we know it will apply to her? She’ll probably do it every Friday night or something. But what about the people have sex anyway? I know people that had sex a lot during the semester and still managed to pass their classes. Ah, there’s drinking too. This guy on my floor had a hangover a couple weeks ago. (he’s not suppose to drink but he do it a lot anyway). He’s still passing his class strongly. Just because she’s doing porn doesn’t mean she’s going to fail. She can do both.</p>

I agree that there is a small subset of the population which are able to juggle these activities along with their studies, but I am sure you agree that most of the time that is not the case. It is not as if you can engage in it once and then restrain yourself for a week. That takes a profound amount of self-control - something which very few people have. I don’t mean that she will fail, but she very likely won’t come out with a 4.0 GPA either. </p>
