@wannabefeynman She got into duke didn’t she? She’s basically doing porn to pay for Duke. I think this one have potential but it gonna look bad when she apply for employment since porn have a negative stigma attached.

And 4.0 GPA? That’s actually such a small amount of people and having a high GPA is irrelevant in the end unless you’re going for grad school or something.

I respect her decisions, doing porn is her choice and I think it’s wrong for people to look down on her because of it, but thinking realistically at least in today’s society there is a lot of prejudice against sex workers in the professional environment. If she does become a lawyer, there may be many firms that won’t accept her because of her past. Hopefully this stigma does not exist in the near future, but if our society does not drastically change very soon then she will have trouble finding work. I respect her a lot though; hopefully her outspokenness about porn will change our traditional views on sex workers?

See below part of the Wiki explanation…which I fail to follow. Presumably the actors do get satisfied. And sexually explicit acts are non-obscene?

"…, finding that the California pandering statute was not intended to cover the hiring of actors who would be engaging in sexually explicit but non-obscene performances. Freeman could only have been lawfully convicted of pandering if he had paid the actors for the purpose of sexually gratifying himself or the actors."

Many smart people are also unfortunately dysfunctional, self-destructive, or miserable. Being smart does not inoculate you from making bad decisions.

Re: obscenity: to quote Justice Potter Stewart: “I know it when I see it.”

While everyone is entitled to their own personal beliefs, here in the good ole US of A, from a legal perspective, mainstream pornography is not obscene.

@NJSue
Can you tell me how you quoted the post?
By the way, I agree that many intelligent individuals have those qualities, but I am sure that you realize those are a small part of the population and are most definitely anomalies.

We can both agree that conducting the aforementioned activities are dis-tractive, addictive and detrimental. As for achieving a 4.0 GPA, that leads into one of my personal philosophies. I do not understand why not everyone can achieve that. All it takes is developing some ingenuity and studying very efficiently. Why can’t everyone accomplish such a simple task? Because of the numerous distractions around us such as partying, clubbing and other aforementioned activities.

I respect her decision as well - everyone has the right to do what they wish to do given it does not hinder the rights of others. However, there is a fine distinction between what is legally correct and what is right based on your individual morals, ethics and values (note that those three are distinct). I am sure that this thread was created for the discussion as to whether we agree with what she did or do not, which is open to interpretations. If this thread was based only upon what is legally right, then the discussion has already ended, since it is evident that what she has done is legally correct. The reason why people do not like such activities is for a variety of reasons. Firstly, as I have abundantly mentioned already, it provides a major distraction for all those who partake in it. Secondly (and most importantly), it exhibits the ideology of lust and thinking of that particular gender as if they are only for your personal enjoyment. Both of the reasons are valid. That, in conjunction with the person’s morals, ethics and values, is the method through which one can base their opinion upon. Her outspokenness will not change anyone’s perspective on the subject - those who think of it a certain way, given it is for valid reasons, will continue to perceive it in that way.

I find appalling that some parents don’t see nothing wrong with it. I don’t even have kids but if I had a little girl, how could I possibly be ok with your daughter taking such destructive and abominable path in life?

Like someone said, almost 100% of porn actresses contract genital herpes and other STD’s. What the hell is wrong with you people?

I am in my 30’s- I am currently attending Iowa State University and I work an on-campus position where I am in constant contact with new students and their families while they visit our campus. Tell you the truth, some of these parents scare me!

Some are so incredibly weird, dysfunctional and have absolutely no common sense. When I look at their kids, I usually see “little versions” of these losers.

Before we start to judge this young woman, I would take a good look at her parents and what types of moral values they possess or lack in this case.

I think most of us parents are extremely sad and troubled by the situation and do indeed wonder about the family and it’s dynamics. I think most of those who have taken other positions are younger folks, NOT parents (as anyone of any age can post on this thread).

@Flossy that’s true, but she’s a young, 18 year old porn star at an extremely prestigious school. I think a lot of people assume porn stars are stupid, unmotivated losers looking for an easy way out, and then there’s this ambitious girl at Duke pursuing a pre-law track who’s also doing porn. She’s breaking a stereotype, which I think is a large reason why she has been in the news so often.
I think her case in particular is making more people listen, but as @wannabefeynman said, people will most likely still perceive porn in the same way they have before :/

She is in no way a “star,” because she is choosing porn to fund the U she chose to attend. She is a poorly paid body who allows herself to be paid for putting herself at terrible risk of STDs and worse, and is doing the publicity circuit because she’s seen as a novelty.

As was mentioned, there are likely others who have made similar choices but not been as public. Can’t see how the fact that the school she attends has some prestige somehow elevates her to “star” status or is even increasing her performance fees.

To many of us, she is a very poorly advised young person who is in an awful position (which she doesn’t fully appreciate) and doesn’t seem to have anyone who cares about her trying to get her into a better, safer place.

You’re a bit late to this story, @VaBluebird. Lol why does it even matter what she’s doing? Is our being for or against it going to change anything, really?

So, her movie “Teen Fidelity” Is about the sexual shenanigans of a bike riding student at Duke University. Coincidence? Of course, some frat boy on campus stumbled into it. And, you don’t do a movie exploiting your school without expecting some attention. Her publicity tour includes dancing at a NYC strip club. And, furthermore she has publicly blamed the situation on the climbing costs of college and specifically the lousy financial package she got from Duke. Also, actual porn stars are outraged by what they call a naïve know-nothing representing their industry. What a mess.

It’s her body, and she can do what she wants with it. If she wants to make porn, she can go right ahead. What I think is the worst part is that her PARENTS condone her choice.

I don’t think her parents condone her choice. They didn’t find out until this whole thing became public. She blames Duke and says her parents were shocked but are now supportive. Big difference.

What did the parents think was going to magically pay the bills they weren’t paying to go to a school she couldn’t afford? Really they had no idea? They are now SUPPORTIVE? Somehow this is all sadder all the time.

Yup, that’s my question, too. How did she get sent off to school with no payment plans? Her dad was in Afghanistan and she texted her mom before the publicity tour with the news. But, what did they think was happening regarding tuition payments? I am stumped.

SHE says her parents are supportive. Personally, I won’t buy it until we hear something directly from them. I think that there is a long, sad story behind this young woman’s bad decisions and until more of it comes out, it’s impossible to draw any conclusions about her family life. After all the talk on this site about how 18 year olds are adults and that their parents have no right to interfere with their decisions, I don’t see why they are now responsible for her very poor decision-making skills.

Academic talent isn’t the same thing as being smart about real life.
