Downton Abbey

No, not Anna. Mrs. Hughes said to her last night that at least they know she is not “with child.” That was Edith who went to the dr’s office.

That’s the one benefit of Anna & Mrs. Hughes keeping the secret. No one would have reason to even look at Bates.

Oh, OK… several had speculated earlier in this thread that Anna might be pregnant.

Anna isn’t pregnant, according to Mrs. Hughes (“now we know there won’t be a baby”), but Edith went to a doctor in London, so presumably Sybbie and George are going to have a little cousin. FRCS = Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons. It’s a fellowship that went to ob/gyns, among other doctors.

That’s why I love this thread! I totally missed that Edith went to see a doctor in London! I know DH missed it too, or he would’ve shot me a look - :open_mouth: I still think I miss a lot because of the accents. I’ve been watching “Call the Midwife” (highly recommend!) and last night I finally went online to see what is this “holix” they are always drinking out of mugs? (The Brits are snickering at me - it’s ok) Turns out it’s a malted milk drink called “Horlick’s” Oh well…but I really hope Edith isn’t pregnant! I don’t know if I trust this guy and his plan to go to Germany and all…

Can you imagine the outcry if Edith is pregnant out of wedlock? I am sure the family will ship her off to Germany on the next boat.

The doctor visit was subtle. Edith took a taxi to an address. We saw the nameplate on the address: Somebody Somebody, FRCS.

^^Just saw the Midwife Christmas Special and looked up the malted drink and the reference to Windmill Girls. Cooincidentally, we then watched an older Judi Dench movie called “Mrs. Henderson Presents,” and it turns out it’s about the founding of the Windmill theater–a vaudeville type theater (with some extra features) that ran shows all day.

Back to Downton…

I think Edith was visiting a doctor and may likely be pregnant. As for Anna, she may have not told the truth about pregnancy to Mrs. Hughes so that plot line could come back and bite her (and us all). But would they try to foist 2 unlikely crisis pregnancies on us?

I figure that Edith either a) is pregnant, b) went to get a diaphragm or dutch cap for future use, c) went to have an abortion (unlikely unless there were more sturm und drang before or after), or d) hoped she was pregnant but isn’t.

Joanna Froggatt is such a good actress. Did you notice her mouth tremble during the conversation with Bates?

I doubt Anna is pregnant - I’m thinking that the Anna/Mr. Bates plot line is going to be revenge-based (did you get a look at Mr. Bates’ expression when he was talking to Mrs. Hughes about revenge?)

As for Edith - I’m guessing she’s pregnant. That poor girl can’t catch a break when it comes to men. I’m just hoping that what’s-hi-name isn’t a cad.

Even if Michael isn’t a cad, he has to obtain a divorce first. And he might have to become a German citizen in order to do that. One wonders how long all that will take…sounds like Edith may have to move to Germany before it is all concluded, if she isn’t going to create a bigger scandal with an out of wedlock birth in England.

I noticed Anna’s tremble too and thought the same thing - very believable. I love Anna - she’s such a sweetheart.

I also noticed Anna’s mouth tremble and am amazed at what a good actress she is. IMHO, she is the best – absolutely the best – on that show.

I’m hoping that Edith went to the doctor only to get some sort of protection.

If Edith is pregnant, maybe she’ll come to America to live with Grandmother Shirley McLain. LOL.

One character that I absolute cannot get invested in is Rose. Nothing about her presence excites me.

As soon as Mrs. Hughes mentioned that they knew that Anna wasn’t “with child” I knew that Edith had to be. Julian Fellowes would never be able to write a situation with a woman having “illicit” sex of some sort without someone getting pregnant.

^^. Also noticed and admired the lip tremble. Love Anna. I don’t get Rose either. Kind of a tag along cousin - maybe her purpose is yet to be seen.

And your weekly update… http://happyplace.someecards.com/28889/downton-abbey-facebook-recap-season-4-episode-4

I get two weekly fixes on Downton: One is the real show on PBS; the other is the Facebook version. Thanks, CountingDown!

I especially loved the exchange between Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Bates over what she’ll swear on!
