I was wondering the same thing…
I think Violet said, “we were invited to tea”, so maybe she was doing damage control and trying to make sure they didn’t get too cozy or talk about common interests.
Dmd - Off the Downton Abbey subject, but there is a difference between a cervical cap and diaphragm. Cervical capd were in vogue for a while in the early '80s. They are less than half the width of diaphragms, not pliable, and a good deal less reliable.
For Emilybee:
I predict Baby Marigold’s name is prescient and she makes a play for Baby George in about 18 years or so and Lady Edith has to spill the beans to prevent the first cousins from coupling!!!
Mrs Hughes didn’t kill Greene but does think Mr. Bates did since she found his train ticket. So she’s upset about a possible witness because she fears for Mr. Bates.
Just when Mary decides to marry Gillingham–he turned out good after all–he is arrested for murder–Bates was the witness at the scene. But Bates is discounted as the witness because he had been arrested for murder himself. Or withdraws his account for the sake of Mary.
Mary goes back to the drawing board (or bedroom rather) with the other guy who now says “I told you so.”
Anna returns to the pharmacy and buys a dozen contraceptives because the pharmacy lady was condescending to her. She starts a clinic after actually getting the instructions that she didn’t receive the first time.
Violet turns out to have had a bit of a bawdy past. You can’t know that much about men unless you’ve experienced a few yourself. The current shenanigans are part of the family DNA.
I missed it…what did Tony say as to how he got adjoining rooms? I don’t think it will be the sex angle that is off but wonder if it isn’t foreshadowing with whatever Blake said about him (I can’t remember exactly). Sadly, my walk this morning was all Mary/Tony/Blake-ish. LOL.
About the adjoining rooms–he said he wasn’t “a half-wit and neither was the hotel manager”.
This probably isn’t the first time the manager has made these arrangements for him.
I recall that Tony said to Mary that it was good they checked in without their titles – Tony is there with his birth name, not his titled name. But when Mary checked in, didn’t she announce herself as “Lady” Mary Crawley? This could be their undoing, as the hotel folks now know that she’s a special person. I’m sure TMZ will show up for the next episode.
Ya’ know, it also occurs to me that if Mary wanted to sample the dish before ordering it, she and Tony have many an opportunity as they ride their horses around the grounds to stop wherever they like and have a roll in the hay. As for getting to know him better in the regular way, having a chaperone for that purpose wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
But that would make for an awfully dull show.
She didn’t use her title when she checked in.
Ah – thanks, Cardinal. I didn’t realize that.
Right “Miss” Mary Crawley.
Good point about Tony using his birth name. As I remember, he broke off with his last fiance as to not lead her on.
Perhaps if he thought Green had hurt Mary he would have pushed him but I do not think he has the backbone to have acted on it. I still think there will be a story line that ends with it being an accident.
Love the idea that Anna will have a clinic.
Mary’s a widow; why isn’t she “Mrs.” ?
They just posted a clip from next week on Masterpiece’s Facebook page. It looks like Cora and the art dealer go on a date. Wow. Can’t wait.
I read last fall about Cora and her new friend. Major spoiler.
LOL about Lord G thinking the art dude was flirting with the dog!
I do think they are trying to give Lord G a sense of humor this season. His toying with Rose was
funny. Cora’s eye rolls are indicating that she is tired of his old fashioned ways.
She’s not Miss Mary Crawley, but she’s also not Mrs. Crawley. She’s Lady Mary Crawley.
And I’m pretty sure that Mrs. Mary Crawley was nobody’s title, except a woman married to a man named Mary Crawley. If Mary didn’t have an honorific, she’d be Mrs. Matthew Crawley.
I’m concerned with Mary getting the Clap or Syphilis, weren’t they rampant back then?
Actually, they were. According to that history of birth control I posted a page or two back, especially during WWI, the “boys” were in Europe with no protection and brought some pretty nasty things home to their wives. It wasn’t until WWII that the use of condoms was encouraged.
