^^The farmer already told Lady Edith that his wife thinks she is keen on him. We saw the wife say something to the farmer previously.
And I agree, for LE to only pay attention to her daughter and not the farmer’s other children would make her highly suspect of something. It is also downright rude and thoughtless. Unbecoming to a Lady.
^^I agree. It’s so blatant.
Edith is self centered in her own way. Mary is actually much kinder even though she does annoy with her facial expressions. Mary would be bringing treats for everyone.
Mary is downright nasty to Edith. They remind me of two school-aged children, mostly Mary, though.
While Mary is sometimes nasty to Edith, she’s never done anything as horrible as what Edith did to her. I’m amazed she can tolerate her at all. I do think that Edith owed Mary a huge apology for that letter to the Turkish ambassador and there’s no evidence that ever happened.
Oh yeah? What about Mary lying to Edith’s fiance and making him leave her at the altar? At least the letter to the Turkish ambassador was true- Pamuk did in fact die in Mary’s bed. On the other hand, Mary’s story to the fiance was a spiteful lie.
^^^^ What lie was that? (Sorry, can’t remember; is my age showing?)
IIRC, Mary told the old finance that she overheard Edith laughing about some old guy. It was obvious that Mary was trying to sabotage their relationship.
Does anyone else remember the details?
Oh yeah that was when whatshisname was going to ask Edith to marry him and Mary made up some story about Edith mocking him so he didn’t ask. But persistent Edith wouldn’t let him get away that easy and she kept pursuing him until he did propose and then it was really his conscience and the support of Granny that made him run I think. In then end I think he wasn’t strong enough to deal with any of the Crowleys.
It was a diaphragm, I think. I caught just a glimpse of the item in the book and it was round.
@CardinalFang Mary did not lie to Edith’s fiancee and “make” him leave her at the altar. You are misremembering.
Mary did lead the old guy (can’t recall his name) to believe that Edith was laughing at him during the first season when she was sparring with Edith over hats and various other trivia. This incident led up to Edith writing to the Turkish ambassador in an attempt to literally destroy Mary socially. The fact that this scheme (had it been successful) could have seriously harmed her entire family as well as ruining her and Sybil’s marriage prospects, doesn’t seem to have occurred to her which makes it stupid as well as vicious.
Edith was left at the altar much later, after Mary and Matthew married. I felt very sorry for her but she had only gotten engaged because she was desperate to get married since both her sisters were. Her fiance was right to call it off, but wrong to wait until the humiliation for Edith was maximized.
Let’s not pretend that Edith is a nicer person than Mary, though. I like to think that she has matured through her suffering and hasn’t done anything horrible in recent seasons but that doesn’t diminish her actions in season 1.
I don’t think either Edith or Mary is a nice person.
.
I agree. Still, I can’t help but remember that Mary had the chance to sabotage Matthew’s engagement to Lavinia Squire and even with her grandmother’s encouragement, couldn’t bring herself to do it. She was also pretty selfless while Matthew was disabled and tried to end his engagement; even though she had realized she was deeply in love with him she helped to reunite him with Lavinia. Somehow, I can’t picture Edith sacrificing her own needs before her own if she had a chance to snag a man she loved, so Mary gets more brownie points from me.
Personally, since Matthew’s death I feel the series isn’t as intriguing. I still watch and enjoy, but if the first 2 seasons had the same quality as last year and this so far, not sure it would have kept my interest. They need to pick it up.
Just watched last weeks episode last night.
It was a diaphragm. I could tell from the size and shape of the box it was in.
I don’t think Bates finds out. I think it is another thing we think is going to play a part in the stories plot but doesn’t.
I think Mrs. Hughes killed Green.
I think they are going to kill off Isis the dog because of ISIS (which no one had even heard of when Isis the dog made it’s first appearance on DA.)
They cannot kill Isis. Why?? I will stop watching if something bad happens to that dog. Sybil dying (and then Matthew) was bad enough.
^ Because of his name.
Dogs do get old and die, of course. Isis the Dog must now be around 12 or so years old. When the series started, it was 1912, correct? And now it’s 1924-ish, right? So Isis the Dog might not be around for too much longer.
We were having the same discussion at our house. She is at least 12, and she seems to be more visible lately than she had been, possibly building up to a sad goodbye. Never thought about the name connection though!
We lost power at 3:30 PM today and didn’t get it back until 9:07. So I haven’t seen this week’s Downton; I’ll have to catch up by finding it online somewhere. Wah! It’s my weekly fix, and now I feel deprived!!
