Yes, we did, but she told it to Mr. Art Historian as if it had been an issue a hundred years ago instead of right now.
Cora’s character is loosely based on Mary Leiter, daughter of the Jewish Levi Leiter, partner of Marshall Field. Mary married the Hon. George Curzon who went on to become the Viceroy of India.
Does anyone think that rose and tom may end up together? The discussion with her father about accepting anyone she chooses seems to be foreshadowing her future love interest.
I hadn’t thought of that but I kind of like the idea
I don’t see what Tom would see in Rose.
She’s friendly and good looking and generally kind hearted?
Actually, she is kind-hearted. She does a lot of volunteer work, even for the Russians. But I think she’s too young for Tom.
No way. There is zero chemistry between them.
She’s also kind of, um, not intellectual. Eye candy for sure but I see Tom with someone of more intellectual substance. Thus Ms. Bunting.
I like how Tom and Mary have developed a brother/sister type of relationship. They shoot straight with each other and it was very sweet how she admitted she loved him two episodes back. I would not like to see Tom with Rose, even though I like her so much better this season.
I agree about Tom and Mary; actually Rose and Edith too. They have a sibling-like relationship.
The real Highclere castle was rescued from financial ruin when the Lord married Almina, the illegitimate daughter of Baron Alfred de Rothschild, incredibly wealthy and Jewish.
There are different rules for the incredibly wealthy, especially if they have a title in the family.
I would not be surprised if the fact that Cora is half-Jewish will be woven into stories of the rise of Hitler and Nazism in Germany. I would be surprised, though, if the storyline goes all the way to Chamberlain & Hitler’s appeasement.
Yes, you are all right RE Rose, it was a thought . . .
I think I am the only one who likes Edith. It may be I like the actress that plays her. she is rather morose but she is supposed to play an unhappy person. I don’t want her to go just get a better story line. I like rose and Tom, perhaps as she matures.
I sort of like Edith and I definitely feel for her.
Me too. And I think she is quite lovely. I just hope she gets her mojo back somehow.
If Edith were a friend of yours, would you not want to shake her out of her funk and tell her to snap out of it and DO something?
I personally like the idea of Tom and Rose. I think as Rose is getting older, she is maturing. I think there could be plenty of chemistry there if a “spark” happens soon. I’d like to see the Bunting character leave. I don’t mind her ideas and the friction she causes, keeps it interesting. This actress doesn’t particularly appeal to me.
