I’d be for Tom and Rose if it would get Sarah Bunting out of the way. I know she is supposed to be an antagonist, but as stated earlier, her rudeness is starting to strain credulity. I liked Rose when she was chasing the black musician around London and otherwise pushing buttons. Maybe she is growing up.
I think the actress who plays Edith does an excellent job. But I think something has to happen in her plot line soon, or I won’t be able to stand the sight of her.
You know , that is probably how people felt about the real life Ediths (spinsters who were only raised to marry well), and I assume all the real life Ediths were aware that they were viewed that way. Always the extra person, pitied, continually having to live with a relative, having to find a relative to live with when her parents passed on.
Yep - she is the “plain” one, doesn’t have a ton of money to herself, all the men were killed in the war, she lost her lover and independent life in London and she has a child who lives down the road but she can’t truly acknowledge. How would she not be upset and on edge?
If Edith were a real person, I would be quite sympathetic. But Downton Abbey is supposed to be a drama – a work of art – so unless something happens with Edith soon, I’m going to be very disappointed.
The reason I do sympathize with Edith a little is that she is the middle child, tolerating a rather snotty older sister who is not as virtuous as people think she is. Mary had two extra-marital dalliances for which she has not paid the piper yet, whereas Edith is suffering for hers. Worse, Edith had more excuse to indulge than Mary did, since Mary has marriage prospects. That is why I think Edith will eventually rise up and do something drastic, like she did when she sent the letter about the Turk’s suspicious death, and when she pursued a writing career in London.
Well, IMO, she needs to get back on that saddle with the writing career. Did anyone notice that Violet asked her about it during the last episode, right after Miss Bunting lobbed one to LG?
I still wonder about those papers Gregson had Edith sign before he took off for Germany.
We have Comcast, and H tried to set up closed caption, but it comes up as unavailable. I find dialogue from some of the characters to be unintelligible, Daisy’s for instance, much of Barrows’. We switched to watching it on a newer television, thinking it was sound quality, but it was no better. It is not the accent, I don’t think. Does anyone else struggle with this?
If I remember correctly, the UK actors sign up for 3 year options as opposed to Americans who commit to longer contracts. That’s why we lost both Matthew and Sybil during Season 3 as they preferred to move on to other things. I am guessing that some of the others think that they aren’t interesting in going to seasons 7-9. As well, what if they had to write out Lady Violet? It would be the absolute worst thing I could imagine for the show. She makes each episode worth watching for me, regardless of plot line.
That said, my reaction is exactly the same as VeryHappy’s :((
WARNING!!! I just clicked on the link supplied by SouthJerseyChessMom and the article has several spoilers. I don’t mind knowing, but those who do will be upset if they read this piece from the Mirror.
I do use closed captioning sometimes to pick up something that was mumbled or obscured by a particularly strong accent. The captions are avaialble on Cox cable, and are preserved if you tape the show (not sure about Tivo). The captions bother me in general, so I only use them only when replaying unclear parts of recorded episodes.
More so than on Downton Abbey,I need the captions for “Call the Midwife.” That show uses a lot of background music, which obscures some of the comments. Plus the scripts make a lot of use of slang words and brand names that aren’t used in the US, so I need to see the word written to figure out what they are talking about.
